The Monkey King
Disclaimer: This is not a strict "not recommended" review. Literacy is required. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Black Myth Wukong is a visually stunning epilogue to the 16th century Chinese epic titled A Journey to the West. If you aren't already, it would certainly benefit you to familiarize yourself with it in order to understand the context here. The narrative will not hold your hand, and for that reason, it respects a player's maturity. The story pacing will feel appropriately disorienting; each chapter acts as a disjointed reflection on one of Sun Wukong's past crimes. The bosses you'll fight are typically his old friends, rivals, and even victims of the original Monkey King who have somehow claimed his shattered relics in order to gain power. It is important to understand that, much like other modern action RPG titles, you'll have to piece the lore together through in-game text logs. For enthusiasts of the genre, this is unlikely to be an issue. To be clear, I am not a fan of Steam's binary review format, but prospective buyers should be aware before purchasing a game at a $60+ price tag. During marketing, Game Science explicitly denied that this project would be souls-like. Instead, they stated it would be more akin to the modern God of War games. Relying on a narrow, technical definition of the genre allowed them to misrepresent the difficulty of the gameplay mechanics. You will not lose currency upon death, and you can respec for free. On the flip side, there are no accessibility settings or even a difficulty slider. Utilizing bonfires will heal you but also respawn area enemies. And probably most importantly, the core gameplay involves boss-centric friction, meaning you'll be spending a great deal of time learning fight-specific mechanics through trial and error (aka perpetual death lol). If any of this sounds appealing to you, you're going to love this. At bare minimum, Black Myth Wukong is a graphical paradise, despite being limited by invisible walls. Enemy designs are visually interesting. Combat is frustrating for the casual gamer but perhaps less challenging for souls-like veterans. As for performance, despite the issues at launch, patches have made the game incredibly stable. I just feel a more honest marketing campaign would have respected everyone's time.
