1. It is a game for children. 2. It's very beautiful. 3. It's quite easy and relaxing. 4. I liked it.
I got this game on sale for ten bucks and it was absolutely worth it. The story is an oddly paced, clunky mess, the combat lacks weight, the graphics are meh, and I absolutely hate the feel of the glider, but there was something really charming about it that got me to lock in and finish one playthrough. If you can catch the game on sale, I'd say go for it.
Not recommended: Biomutant
We truly are living in the golden age of gaming. In fact, so many new titles are being released every day that it's pretty much impossible for any one gamer to keep up. Of course, the old 20-80 rule still applies - even with the glut of new releases, finding something worth playing is as challenging as ever. At first glance, Biomutant seemed to fit the bill: a AA open-world ARPG sounds like something I could really sink my teeth in. However, it didn't take too long to find out how wrong I was. In Biomutant you play as a nameless… red-panda-mutant-thing, I suppose. Having just returned home from some undefined journey (the NPCs refer to him as a "wandering ronin"), our protagonist finds it in disarray. The Tree of Life, said to (quite appropriately) give life to the whole world, is slowly decaying, and the colossal mutated beasts known as the "worldeaters" are using this opportunity to try and bring it down for good. Because of all this, the six local kung fu clans are now at war, with some wanting to restore the Tree, and others trying to destroy it instead. Ultimately, it's up to our protagonist to choose who to side with in this conflict, and thus determine the fate of the clans, the Tree, and the world as we know it. Overall, the main premise is actually quite serviceable. After all, it's pretty clearly drawing inspiration from wuxia stories, especially those with wondering martial arts masters. While this is indeed a deep well to draw from, Biomutant manages to waste any potential the story had by dumbing it down and rushing the pacing. The gameplay doesn't fare much better either. The combat, which should be absolutely rock-solid in a game touted as a "post-apocalyptic kung fu fable", feels clunky and unpolished - the melee attacks lack any feeling of weight, while the ranged combat is so boring it should probably be investigated as a surefire way to medically induce a coma. The game also insists on piling up system upon system, most of which are both overly complex and completely superfluous. And while the game world is colorful and initially looks inviting, it becomes clear pretty quickly that the areas you traverse are actually very linear and there isn't really all that much point in exploration. All of this begs the question (and it's one that many other reviewers have also asked), who is this game for? On the one hand, you might think it was aimed at children, what with all the cute anthropomorphic animals and fairy-tale-like storytelling. However, I'm willing to bet that any child's eyes would glaze over from the needlessly complex systems and tedious combat. On the other hand, the game is far too hand-holdy and simplistic for an adult to take seriously. Being forced into a choice between the generic good and bad guys some five minutes after finishing the tutorial doesn't exactly scream peak RPG storytelling. Sure, you can game the system if you want to master all six schools of kung fu, but I would expect a supposedly open-world game would let me explore at least a little bit before I get to decide who I want to side with. Normally, I'm pretty strongly on the record as being a fan of 7/10 games - titles with interesting and innovative ideas that, although they may be lacking in execution, at least try to bring something new and fresh to the table. But for this to be the case, the game has to actually get at least a few things right. And unfortunately, looking at Biomutant, I honestly can't name a single element that really works.
Possibly one of my favorite games of the last few years. Others have complained about the narrator’s voice chiming in regularly; I actually don’t find it to be very annoying. Your mileage may vary, but I find it FAR less irritating than, for comparison, the pawns in Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen, who were constantly interjecting with the same phrases verbatim. The narrator here at least says something different every time he speaks, which is regularly, but not incessantly. Every single creature in the game is adorable and fun to look at. So it seriously has that going for it. Sure, combat is of a kind of lightning fast beat-em-up style, but I frankly love that kind of energy in a game. You keep learning new moves of your choice every time you level up, so there’s always a new one to add to your arsenal, which makes combat more versatile and keeps you on your toes trying to spice up your fighting style instead of mashing buttons. The world is huge, and interesting. This is on top of the fact that there are many many side quests to keep you occupied, and they don’t generally feel completely unnecessary. I actually find it hard to get myself to make progress on the main story objectives, because the side quests seem immediately more interesting most of the time. At any rate, the side quests keep you moving all the way throughout the world, and the exploration becomes fun and interesting in its own right. Your choices matter, and there are multiple ways to move through the game philosophically. I find that pretty refreshing. Highly recommend.
Graphics is good other than that terrible gameplay and crappy control
Biomutant is without a doubt one of the most underrated, hidden gems that exists in the entire gaming industry. This RPG is absolutely addictive in many ways - from combat, to crafting, to exploring the masterfully crafted, beautiful world. Many complaints stem from the "childish" way the mouse speak - but it makes total sense considering they're MICE from a dystopian world where humanity has destroyed it through industrial waste and mismanagement of ecosystems - causing wildlife to become irradiated and mutated. The narrater translated and is top notch - albeit he does speak A LOT, he does it WELL as this is a story being told while you create it. First of all, I can't stop praising the complex, yet fluid and addictive combat system. Every movement feels like it has purpose - every melle hit feels like it has OOMPH behind it - a very rare aspect that is missing from so many games today. You truly feel like you are a mouse ninja! Secondly, while the game gives the facade that it is for children - it tells a story that ALL people of ALL ages need to hear. That our world and life itself is the most important thing to cherish and protect - as your goal in this game is to save the Tree of Life from impending blight. You can choose to plow down the main line story quests - or venture off and do all the side ones instead ( I recommend) which adds a ton of depth and purpose to why things are the way they are in Biomutant. The absolute creativity and ability to customize nearly every aspect of your character - from weapons, and armor - to your stats and abilities. It is very complex offering infinite possibilities. No two characters will ever be the same. You must make choices all throughout the game - some can help you or haunt you as time passes. But it gives meaning to your decisions and is thoroughly immersive. If you can get past the narrator, and some of the "child" talk - this game is an absolute masterpiece and deserves far more recognition than it has. It offers endless fun with new ways to combat enemies or find new resources to craft. It has something for nearly everyone and is well worth a playthrough - even more. 9/10
biomutant feels like it doesnt know if it wants to be a original and interesting rpg fighting game or a cute cosy game like little big planet. and because of that the game feels very weird. sometimes you are fighting and everything is cool and fun and then out of nowhere you are pulled into a long dialogue where the characters feel weird and talk weird and they almost feel like sock puppets and... it really.... messes with the phasing.
The reviews about this game ARE TRASH! This game is SO UNIQUE and beautiful, one of the few new games that really made me enjoy playing and wanting to come back. Unique feelling and nostalgia you only had in games when you were a kid and AWESOME messages too...highly reccomend it!
I like this game, its pretty fun. game isn't perfect but it doesn't deserve the hate it gets at all.
