Belle-de-Nuite Note: I played this on my phone (many times) so I have zero hours on Steam Summary: • In Belle-de-Nuit you are a dueler for the brothel Belle-de-Nuit, a job which entails defending the workers and running errands for the madame. Over the course of the game, you can find romance with one (or more!) of three characters; your dueling rival, a friend and skilled-flirt, or the shy bartender. In addition to (/instead of) romance, you can also spend your time dueling or figuring out what is going on behind the scenes. The Good: • Pacing – One thing I really admire about Belle-de-Nuit is the pacing. Seeing that the book was 115,00 words (quite a lot, especially if this was a standard book, but that length can feel short when reading interactive fiction), I thought that there wouldn’t be enough time or space to make characters engaging enough to want to romance anyone, let alone develop any relationships. However, this is absolutely not the case. The author quickly establishes each character, and provides what feels like a significant amount of time with your chosen romance. Things kind of go from 30 to 100 at the end, but overall, this pacing of the story felt strong. • Characterization – I happened to like each character, which was another enjoyable surprise. Each character seemed to be a subtle usurpation of the trope or generalization. Lou, the bartender, is shy, but not a pushover. Amaryllis is a beautiful-flirt, but we also get moments where we see she’s a huge nerd with a silly sense of humor, and that’s awesome. Sebastian is a hot-tempered man from Spain, who is eager to prove his dueling capabilities, but very soft when given the chance to show it. Each character wants something other than the MC (and that’s a relief), and the time you spend with the characters show you something about them that you might not expect. • Spicy-stuff – There was a significant amount of spicy content considering the singular chili pepper at the front of the title, but that may be due to the low-level of explicitness. If you’re not into spicy-stuff these opportunities are opt-in moments and unnecessary to develop your relationship with any character. • Handling the Main Plot – Confession time: When I saw that this was about dueling, I was pretty disappointed. In some other titles, I’ve felt punished for not loving whatever the main thing is, so since I’m not super into dueling I thought the book would get old quick, BUT I was wrong!!! Here’s what Belle-de-Nuit did that worked really well for the type of reader I am. In the game, I was able to decide where to dedicate my attention. Not feeling the dueling? Sure, just go romance some of these people. Want to get to the tragic story happening in the background rather than smooch these people? Have at it. OR, if you’re feeling up to it, go ahead and dedicate yourself to dueling. Because I didn’t feel forced into any singular plot or play-activity, I eagerly went back and did them all (yes, I ended up loving dueling. Who would have known). I thought this was one of the strongest points in favor of the game, and which also encouraged me to play Belle-de-Nuit with different purposes multiple times. Similarly, because of the structure, it felt like I was playing a new book with a few similar sections in each playthrough, rather than the same book with a few new sections each time. That’s the highest praise I can offer, and honestly, the most bang for your buck if you’re on the fence about whether or not to buy it. I Wanted More: • I wanted more, which is the best thing to put as a concluding thought about the text, especially since I was also pretty surprised by the amount of content that there was. The game was good enough where I wanted more time and exploration of the characters (and this is NOT a critique of the work done, only a desire for more because of how well different elements worked together). Suggestions for New Players: • In general, there’s more work that goes into these games than meets the eye. I think this game does really well in making the bulk of the playthrough dedicated to your interest so it seems longer than you might expect at first glance. Just keep an open mind. You’ll Like This If: • You like character driven work • You enjoy directing your experience rather than the experience directing you • A certain amount of ‘pre-developed protagonist’ • Smooches and/or dueling

Ok so, this is purportedly a romance game, and there is some romance in it. Lou is nice, I like her. But for me, it took just a short number of pages for it to become a Revenge Murder game. One of the first characters you meet is an obnoxious, pompous ass who demands a duel with you. If you decline, given that there is absolutely nothing to gain from it, this boorish ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ presses you further, insisting that he only wants a friendly competition. The game then forces you to accept. You cannot again decline however much you want to. So, you have to fight the guy and, predictably, it is impossible to win. The prick breaks your sword and doesn't even offer an apology for destroying what may well be the most valuable thing you own - he's smug and supercilious and swaggers off. Obviously, it was at this point that I decided that I wanted to see this man's blood pooling on the Parisian cobblestones. And yet, despite taking every possible opportunity I could find throughout the story when he Keeps.Showing.Up. to express withering disdain and hatred for him, the story continued to override my deep loathing. In fact, at a point when the MC was musing privately on the many ways even a minor wound sustained in a duel might lead to infection and death, she thinks to herself "Of course, I would never intentionally try to kill him..." NO, I VERY MUCH WOULD LIKE TO DO THAT PLEASE LET ME MURDER HIM At the end of the game you finally do duel him again and SPOILERS IT'S NOT POSSIBLE TO WIN, ♥♥♥♥ YOU GAME ♥♥♥♥ YOU SO MUCH The game ends with an advertisement for the sequel, and I can say wholeheartedly that unless the sequel involves breaking into that guy's bedroom while he sleeps, stabbing him seventy-three times with a dagger, then leaving his body in a forest near Versailles to rot, then I am not interested. EDIT: I bought a big bundle of games from this publisher, and it included the DLC sequel to this game. I don't know why but I checked it out and yes, it's just as awful about putting you into situations where have the option to use violence against a person who is physically threatening you or your friends, or indeed actually literally at that moment doing violence, and you CANNOT WIN. I have to stress this, I edited the save file to make sure I had maximum stats and I still lost the fight. Pre-scripted "you lose" scenarios are complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and ♥♥♥♥ the author for doing it. Rebecca Zahabi, I will endeavor to never purchase anything you've had a hand in ever again. Firs,t I have to put up with Sebastian's ♥♥♥♥ throughout the entire first game and now I try to DO MY LITERAL JOB OF DEFENDING THE BROTHEL and I get knocked unconscious by the villain. ♥♥♥♥ you.
Verging on negative. I found it to be fine though slightly underwhelming. More options for dialogue would be nice, I felt a bit limited in my options. There were a few moments where I felt that autonomy was taken away, my pc reacting independently where I should have had a say. A bit too short I think, just not enough to flesh out the PC and the NPC's. I think that if this was double the length I would be raving here. There is a foundation for really solid game here, but to repeat myself it just needed more.
I found this game delightful. It is fairly short, but I still enjoyed the story and relationships. The choices were clear and there is a bit of mystery to uncover, so I'm intrigued to play through again and see if I can discover more.
Enjoyable short story. Too short. I found hardly possible to fall in love so rushly and fast, but writing is good, story works. I would love to read something more darker and longer from this author! Good luck!
Belle-de-Nuit is a wonderful, wholesome experience! The writing was good and atmospheric, drawing me into the story with the vivid pictures it painted in my head. I didn't feel like the game was too short, but rather an ideal length for me personally to enjoy. I've already purchased the sequel chapter and look forward to diving in! As a genderfluid person, I loved the flexibility given to the reader/player. Throughout the game, I wasn't forced to choose a masculine or feminine representation, but was given natural-feeling choices each time the topic came up. This really stood out to me, and it's one of the main reasons why I will recommend this game! Lou was lovely, and the romance felt authentic and sweet. Though the other love interests weren't suited to my personal taste, they seemed well-written and compelling. There's also an option to be poly, which is amazing. It was great to be able to choose between a serious relationship and something more casual. In my playthrough I went with catching the bouquet and the consequences of it. Many games might have created drama for the sake of it, but Lou's reaction was refreshing and heart-warming and I loved every second of it.
