I think I finished this game in one or two sittings. The narrator talking about how great I am is pretty neato, I'd like it if more games did that. It's like having your friend or partner watching you play the game but they're unable to speak when you eat ♥♥♥♥ 50 times falling down the same hole.
Bastion is an oldie but goodie
This is a beautiful game. Artistically, one of the best, with vibrant visuals and gorgeous music. Mechanically, its follows with the art and compliments it in a way I could never have understood without playing the game. This game is worth it.
The narrator's voice awoke something in me. ♥♥♥♥ the shield proving ground/10
Bastion is a genuinely special game that earns every bit of its legendary reputation — the reactive narrator, Darren Korb's unforgettable acoustic-frontier soundtrack, and the hand-painted world that literally builds itself beneath your feet combine into something that feels completely unlike anything else. The combat is straightforward but satisfying, with enough weapon variety and loadout customization to keep things fresh across a tight 7-8 hour campaign. Coming from Hades, the slower pace took some adjustment, but once it clicked I found myself absorbed in Rucks' storytelling in a way I didn't expect. It's not perfect — the Proving Grounds challenges can feel unbalanced, and auto-aim on controller is a bit awkward — but these are minor complaints against an experience that holds up remarkably well for a 2011 indie. If you've played every other Supergiant game, don't let this one keep gathering dust in your library.
One of the great games that kicked off the indie revolution, and still holds up to this day. The narrator is classic, the combat can feel a bit less smooth compared to modern games, but once you get in the groove its very enjoyable. The soundtrack is amazing, and the game is fairly short, while still feeling complete and rewarding. Considering the game is almost free on sale, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't give it a shot. Its aged remarkably well and gives a great context on how Supergiant has evolved as a studio.
I kept waiting for something to happen. When the story finally revealed itself, I got so angry that the game had made me complicit in supporting a choice without any chance to explore the concept and nuance of the choice in depth. I played through the rest of the game hoping it would get better. It did not.
Yeah okay this needed more time to marinate. After sitting with Zia's Theme on repeat for a few hours because it's just that good, I can say that this is.. probably not the best conveyed anti-imperialism story, but Supergiant is very capable of producing a game that aches in a very different way. The gameplay mechanics admittedly are not my favorite, but the world is just beautiful. The floor rising up to meet you and falling away, the music (ily Darren Korb) being haunting and introspective and yet having a frontiercore vibe, the narrator speaking over everyone.. ough. It's easy to blow past. Very easy. The music and its themes are very much in my head, even after I've moved on to another game.
