About
Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger.
Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
The Living Lands is an island where the air hums with ancient magic, the flora seems to move with a mind of its own, and the ground beneath your feet shifts with secrets waiting to be unearthed.
Now, the Living Lands faces a dire threat—a mysterious plague that defies nature and reason, spreading chaos across its sprawling wilderness.
As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate, but what begins as a mission of duty soon becomes deeply personal—you feel as though the land recognizes you and is pulling you toward something greater. The choices you make will ripple across the Living Lands, shaping the fates of its people, its creatures, and even yourself. But beware, for every decision carries weight, and the forces you encounter will not hesitate to test your resolve.
Can you navigate the tangled web of intrigue, power, and danger to uncover the truth? Can you save this unknown frontier and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them asunder?
Even more to do in the game! This update brings New Game Plus, a Photo Mode, a brand new weapon type with two-handed staves, the ability to change character appearance whenever you’d like, new character creation presets, additional Godlike presets, custom game difficulty settings, and the addition of three new playable races: Dwarf, Aumaua, and Orlan.
The Living Lands is a place that feels foreign yet somewhat intrinsic to you as it feels the island itself is calling out to you for help. Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem.
Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way. Dig into your grimoire for spells to trap, freeze or burn enemies, bash them with your shield, or use range bows to attack from a distance.
Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities. From a former mercenary to an eccentric wizard, they will be part of your journey with your choices shaping them as you help them with their quests.

boring
My review page. Follow me on twitch!
The gist of it:
It's hard to rate Avowed because, honestly, it was pretty fun combat-wise, but for every good thing it does, it also comes with some very repetitive gamey aspects. 👍 The good parts: +Great combat +Fantastic atmosphere 👎The bad parts: -Repetitive -Huge pacing issues near the end
Story
Avowed is set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, a universe that I did not have much love for. Luckily, you don't actually need to play both PoE games, I do have to say that after finishing Avowed, I reinstalled both PoE games. Lore-wise, it's good, there's a lot of cool things in its universe that are nice to read, the problem was the main story, which felt super safe. It suffered the same as Dragon Age Veilguard, as in nothing in the game that happens to your main character is ever sad or amazing. It's a corporate story, if you wanna call it that, and as long as they're under Microsoft's thumb, they'll never change. Anyway, regarding the main story, you play as a chosen one, as you'd expect, and you're tasked with figuring out a plague. I can't say much else because I'd be jumping into spoiler territory, but suffice to say, the game does have decent story choices that will impact your journey's end. The characters you meet are average, with the exception of Garrus(you'll get it), who was fun to have around all the time. Story rating: 7/10
Gameplay
Combat-wise, the game was super fun, and probably the best magic gameplay I've ever played. It was super snappy, engaging, and I truly felt like a powerful mage wreaking havoc on the battlefield. Imagine you're the doom guy of the mages. You can also play as a ranger or a fighter, though I'm not sure how fun those two other classes are. Considering the game is in the Pillars universe, it was kinda dissapointing to be limited to only these 3. Exploration is also pretty great, there are a ton of chests and unique items to find to suit your needs, and you do need to explore a lot because upgrading things is super expensive. It's a shame that even this aspect is done boringly, because only unique items can have their unique status effects upgraded, and even those are super basic, such as having a longer range or slightly more damage. Aside from chests and mats, you can also find parts of totems that can massively boost your character stats. It's not a deep rpg, in fact, it's super casual, which may put some hardcore players off. Still, if you enjoy fun combat and looting a ton of samey things, then this is for you. Just be aware of its repetitive nature, it's all the same, unlock region, get the quests from the main town, finish main quest, repeat 4 times. Even the bosses were pretty boring and generic. Coming from a game where you fought Gods and dragons, in Avowed, the most dangerous boss is a huge bear. Gameplay rating: 8/10
Audio
It was great to hear Garrus again as a fellow companion, and everyone else also does a fine job of voice acting their characters. It's one great thing Obsidian has done well consistently. The soundtrack was ok, not really remarkable, sadly. As for all the other sound-related aspects, they were pretty decent. Audio rating: 8/10
Graphics, performance and tech analysis
The game ran really well aside from lots of travel micro-stutters which are typical of bad UE5 dev implementation. The game does look incredible at times, especially at night. Tons of colorful environments that light up beautifully even at max distances. Great atmosphere as well, level design was also pretty good, with tons of things to uncover. Had a few bugs and crashes, but nothing game-breaking or impactful. Graphics, performance, and tech analysis score: 8/10
Conclusion
They charged 80 euros for this at launch so you can imagine why nobody gave a fk about it. It's much cheaper now, and I would def recommend it at its current prices.
Final score: 7.7/10
What a fantastic game! I have not picked up this game for so long, thinking it was a 1st person, combat focused Pillars of Eternity Edition. Time to set this right - this is literally the best thing POE fans can wish for after the original series was discontinued. It has just the perfect mix between combat / quest hunting / NPC interaction / skill development, with the level of deep, thought-through lore, detail and melancholic atmosphere and music that is so typical for the series. Next to that, combat feels great (even when switching between melee, bow + magic on the steamdeck) and the character creator got a more detail-oriented upgrade from the original series. Hoping we will get more of this!
game runs like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, recommend playing using xbox gamepass. unplayable on PC unless you want to lower settings to bare minimum. And even then, I still dont think this game would run worth playing. Game itself is good. But optimisation is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ terrible.
Why does it seem like most developers have Human Resources write their games now? The dialogue choices, companions, and overall writing was infinitely better in the first Outer Worlds game. Here it is simply horrible. This game is truly brought down by the bad and boring writing. The game has good combat, class system, and explorable world. But those positive things are dragged down by "Somehow Palpatine Returned" level of writing and story. Its cringe, its boring, its simply awful. Not really an ounce of cleverness or deepness to be found. I thought the music was also a little repetitive and too ambient. Its a true shame as Fallout: New Vegas and Outer Worlds had phenomenal writing, story, characters, and basically everything you would want for an RPG. Yet here, Obsidian simply mailed in the writing, which is an odd lack of focus for a single player role playing game. Every top RPG has great writing and story and this game never even tried. Sad!
Oh hell naw. The "good will" that I have been willing to give developers has reached a deficit. They owe ME at this point. I need to see a game that captivates and delivers quality. I need to see that you DESIRE me as a customer, not throwing down slop as if I should be thankful to have it. I am not giving games "the benefit of the doubt", anymore. I have to EARN my money....so should they. So when I fell through the damn map at the hour and a half point; I had enough. Already, within the first section, I have seen a partially-rendered world which failed to present me with GROUND! Seriously?! The gameplay itself, what little I got in, seemed alright; except for the fact that shooting a bow felt a tad "off". That, could just be me trying to adjust to it, though. However, I am old enough to remember New Vegas. I remember falling through THAT map, too. At least those times had the excuse of me trying to rock hop up a mountain instead of taking the "long way". This time, I was on a ROAD....just outside the first campsite.....barely in the "open" world. Maybe, a couple years from now, when it gets to be 80% off; I'll try it again. However, I have now seen what companies can do with a "$40" game. I have seen games released THIS YEAR....IN EARLY ACCESS....FOR LESS....doing a better job than this dumpster fire. Save your money. Save it for this and save it for whatever garbage they'll churn out later. You waited this long....might as well wait for it to be, either, fixed; or, at least, the ACTUAL price the "effort" is worth. Twenty bucks is all I'd give them...and THAT only if I had nothing else to play.
I really want to like this game but the performance is atrocious I sit comfortably in the recommended settings but this game runs my GPU to 100% until it crashes. I have tried various settings and options and none of them changes the performance at all, even on full low settings and no ray tracing the games runs my GPU till it crashes. I love what I have managed to play but each time I try the issues persist.
