Amnesia: The Dark Descent is probably my favorite game ever, and for me it is a clear 10/10. The biggest strength of the game is its atmosphere. The music, sound design, and overall mood are outstanding. Exploring the castle, figuring out how to progress, and solving small puzzles feels incredibly satisfying, and the monster encounters make the whole experience even more memorable. One of my favorite moments in gaming is the water monster sequence, followed by the peaceful fountain music after you escape. That moment alone says a lot about how powerful this game is. Another big advantage is the modding scene. The game has a huge number of custom stories and mods, so even after finishing the main campaign, you can easily spend dozens of additional hours in the world of Amnesia. If I had to criticize something, I would say the ending could maybe be a bit more intense. Still, this is an easy recommendation for me and one of the greatest horror games ever made.

The original that launched Poo Poo Pie's career. Still holds up to this day. The jank has its own charm and horror. Also turns into a proper gore fest in the final act.
I can't say I can recommend Amnesia: The Dark Descent, despite its reputation and how much its revered. I feel it's become prey to hype versus genuine quality, be it immediate or retroactively. This game has made me hate sanity meters as a mechanic as your vision gets so blurred and messy that it genuinely causes headaches and motion sickness making it unpleasant to play, which pulls you out of any immersion. It's got some fairly good scares, albeit mostly jump scares, but the monsters are just Silent Hill 2 rejects and they come off as annoying rather than terrifying. Your character's voice acting is also enough to pull you out of any immersion as he sounds like a newscaster or someone reading the local paper. The puzzles are fine, but one was just baffling to the point of agitating. The story is also fine and has some interesting developments but the game as a whole only gets truly interesting towards the end, which comes across as rushed and too little, too late and I ultimately just wanted it to be over after a while. Verdict: overrated.
its so scary i ran around the house and stuck my balls in the toaster
