When a series of gruesome murders shake a small town after a strange aristocrat dies and his body goes missing, rumors of a supernatural monster abound. In life Sir William was known to be a cruel and evil man, rumored to be the murderer behind many unsolved crimes.

One of my favorite games, I started playing expecting anything and ended up with one of the games that left a big mark on me. the atmosphere is incredible and the story is engaging. The only bad part is when it ends. the story was not complete in this first game.
Więcej takich Gier i studiów produkujących oldschoolowe przygodówki.

Alter Ego is a story-driven point-and-click adventure that tries to capture the spirit of classic detective fiction while wrapping it in a dark, gothic atmosphere. Developed by bitComposer Games and published by Viva Media, it positions itself as a slow, methodical mystery set in a grim version of Victorian-era England. From the outset, the game signals its priorities clearly: this is less about mechanical complexity and more about narrative, mood, and the gradual unraveling of a disturbing case. The story centers on a string of murders that follow the death of a wealthy nobleman rumored to have lived a deeply sinister life. When his coffin is discovered to be empty, speculation spreads quickly, blurring the line between rational explanation and supernatural fear. What makes the narrative structure stand out is its use of two protagonists with very different perspectives. On one side is Detective Briscol, a disciplined investigator grounded in logic and procedure; on the other is Timothy Moor, a streetwise thief whose motivations are far less noble. The game alternates between these two viewpoints, allowing players to experience the same mystery from contrasting angles. In theory, this duality adds richness and tension, though in practice it sometimes feels more like a narrative device than a fully integrated system. Gameplay follows a traditional point-and-click formula, relying heavily on exploration, dialogue, and item interaction. Players move through a wide range of environments, from dimly lit streets to richly detailed interiors, piecing together clues by speaking with characters and examining objects. The pacing is deliberately slow, encouraging careful observation and patience rather than quick decision-making. For players who enjoy classic adventure design, this approach can feel immersive and rewarding, as each discovery contributes to a broader understanding of the case. However, those accustomed to more dynamic or modern interpretations of the genre may find the experience somewhat rigid and occasionally tedious. The game’s strongest quality lies in its atmosphere. There is a consistent sense of unease that permeates the entire experience, supported by moody visuals, subdued lighting, and a fittingly somber soundtrack. The world feels heavy with tension, as if something is always just out of sight, waiting to be uncovered. Voice acting and sound design further enhance this tone, giving weight to conversations and reinforcing the game’s darker themes. Even when the gameplay slows down, the atmosphere often carries the experience forward, maintaining a sense of intrigue. That said, the game struggles to fully capitalize on its narrative potential. While the premise is compelling, the execution can feel uneven, particularly in how the story unfolds and concludes. Certain plot developments lack impact, and the pacing can be inconsistent, with some sections dragging while others move too quickly. The dual-character structure, though conceptually interesting, doesn’t always deepen the story in meaningful ways, and the protagonists themselves remain somewhat underdeveloped. As a result, it can be difficult to form a strong emotional connection to their journeys. The puzzle design is another area where the game feels limited. Many of the challenges are straightforward and functional, but they rarely stand out as particularly clever or memorable. Instead of acting as highlights, they often serve as simple obstacles that gate progression. This lack of variety or innovation can make the gameplay feel repetitive over time, especially during longer sessions. Combined with occasional interface quirks and dated animations, it reinforces the sense that the game is rooted in an earlier era of design. Despite these issues, there is still something appealing about Alter Ego, particularly for fans of traditional adventure games. It captures a certain kind of slow, deliberate storytelling that has become less common, offering an experience that prioritizes mood and narrative over spectacle. Its imperfections are evident, but so is its ambition, and there are moments where its atmosphere and premise come together in a way that feels genuinely engaging. In the end, Alter Ego is a game that succeeds more in creating a memorable tone than in delivering a consistently compelling adventure. It offers a solid foundation of mystery and intrigue, but its uneven execution prevents it from reaching its full potential. For players who appreciate classic point-and-click experiences and are willing to accept some rough edges, it can still provide an interesting and worthwhile journey. Rating: 6/10
