This game is bad. And I have played a ton of bad games. I wouldn't even recommend All That Remains if it were free. Can't believe they are charging 4 bucks for this.
PROS
+ ok....so I have sat here for 5 minutes and tried to think of something positive to say. If there is something positive then its eluding me right now.
CONS
- movement. Ever tried to grind warm meat in a meat grinder? That's what movement in this game feels like. Its a horrible sludge of getting nowhere.- graphics. Everything is fogged over and has that pixellated flashlight ring thing going on. The store page screenshots are not representative of what I saw on an RTX 2080ti with all the settings maxed out. DON'T TRUST THOSE SCREENSHOTS. Also the colour ones they took are the only decent shots in the whole game. I know because I took exactly the same ones.- soldiers. There is no explanation why there are soldiers here. I mean I can guess why but we are never told why they are gunning down civilians. They move like Resident Evil 1 zombies but somehow come off as more lifeless.- story. Did Elysian Games miss the memo about walking sims? Story is kinda key here. You'd think with the military patrolling city streets and shooting people on sight would mean some kind of zombie pandemic apocalypse thingy. But when we crawl to the end of this threadbare game we see that actually corporations have been polluting the air and making the city uninhabitable. I suppose residents that couldn't afford to leave or had nowhere else to go are just fair game now for target practice?- characters. Another memo missed perhaps that games should have protagonists that we get a feel for and can empathise with. John, our guy that we put one slow foot in front of the other for, for 30 minutes is an absolutely vacuous human being who we don't get enough information to know about to understand why he was such a ♥♥♥♥. - stealth mode. Are....You....Kidding? You need to stealth your way past soldiers in this game to continue. With controls as bad as this, it makes stealthing laughable. What were you thinking Elysian Games? - voicing. Phoned in voice acting is the cherry on top of this diarrhea cake. Wow. This is the one excuse where I will take the time to write a review for a bad game. Usually I just uninstall and move on to more positive experiences but this game needs one. It is an extortionate amount for the quality and playtime. It is a complete waste of which doesn't even drop any cards or give you any cheevos. It is barefaced lying about the screenshots on its storepage having touched them up in photoshop or something like that.Ugh....stay away folks. I wouldn't even play this with someone else's hard drive.
I would hesitate to even call this worth the $4 base price. It's fine, but it's easily beatable in around 30 minutes, without really all that much to show for it. The environmental message is topical enough now, but the game doesn't give itself time to really explore that with any depth other than "manmade pollution is bad and we should maybe start doing something about that". The game does a good job of contrasting natural beauty from the past to the bleak, Silent Hill-esque landscape of the present, but there's not really much around to explore. Gameplay is mostly a combination walking simulator and stealth, with a few soldiers here and there that you have to sneak around, but most of these sections are easy enough to get past on the first try. Sound design is pretty solid, and probably the thing that stands out the most to me about this game. The voice acting is pretty good, the soldiers' voices in the distance are garbled and appropriately menacing, and even the sound of labored breathing is done to surprisingly unsettling effect in places. Still, I wouldn't say it's quite enough to make up for a bland, cliched message, uninteresting characters, and fairly barebones graphics and gameplay. I was glad to give it a try, but it didn't leave much of an impression.
All That Remains is a game I have mixed feelings about. On one hand, it kind of epitomizes a true 4 out of 10 game. In that regard, I'm reminded of Falling Sun, which was another game, where 4/10 was a perfect rating. That said, I still enjoyed this game. So, with that in mind....
Story
The story is fairly basic. You essentially are having your life flash before your eyes as you gasp your dying breaths in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event. As you recall what brought you here, you travel through the memories of what seems to be martial law, seeing your friends killed as you try to ascend above the "smog" that has corrupted the world. Basically.
Gameplay
This is a k/m only game, and interestingly, mouse sensitivity begins at zero lol. Adjust as needed. Controls are simple WASD with caps, shift, and a few other random keys functioning as the crouch button. You will basically navigate your way through three levels, avoiding soldiers (or getting shot by them and needing to start the level over), taking in the imagery, and experiencing the occasional flashback. Despite their simplicity, the controls are kind of wonky, with no lack for clipping and invisible walls. Some of the soldiers' ability to see you also seems pretty random. All in all, it is functional, but not great by any means.
Graphics
The graphics in All That Remains look cool. Mostly, it's greys, blacks, and whites with the occasional splash of color for dramatic effect. Although the actual objects such as buildings and the like are pretty basic, the actual use of grain filtering and distance distortion does look cool, and there are plenty of nice screenshot moments.
Audio
There is some limited voice acting and music, but honestly, nothing too noteworthy IMO. Pretty average overall
Verdict
While this is, as mentioned before, the epitome of a 4/10 game, I still enjoyed it enough to recommend checking it out. It's a quick blast walking simulator that will take you around a half hour to forty minutes to complete. I don't think I would pay the $4 asking price. So, I'm recommending it, but only on sale. Great short walking simulator (playtime around 40 minutes) with beautiful visuals and nice music. Sound and voice-acting is very good too. The story, told through flashbacks, is ok and there are some easy parts in it, where you have to sneak around soldiers. I recommend it.
4/10
It is a very poor story, and poor content for the price they ask. 0.99$ would be most suitable price for this game to ask, but even that would be too much for me, as I have finished the game and regret every penny spend on it. You should rather treat this game like this. Buy it, play it within 1 week after purchase, and decide if you got your money's worth... if not then just refund it cause the game takes less then 1 hour to finish. (I sadly cannot refund, but I would if I had the possibility) The graphics are bad, you can change only resolution and set up only general quality of graphics when typical Unity window pops up at start. In game menu dosent offer much also, only master volume, mouse sensitivity, resoultion, full screen and that is all.... You can clearly see that the game was build from bought assets (if you dont like this type of approach to creating games, stay away). The screen kept tearing no matter what I tried to do (tried force Nvidia settings, nothing), The only really good thing was the music, so complements for that But lets see again what store page says "An engaging interactive narrative/walking simulator." - Yeah right... you just walk, you dont grab or push anything. You only walk and in certain areas, your character stops, you see the area how it was before the cataclism, and listen to dialogue between main character and his wife or his friend. That is it! That is the deep engaging narrative..... "A deep and original narrative told through the world and your memories." - well I think the above said it all. "Stealth and exploration elements seamlessly blended into experiential game play." - wow that stealth... you have clone soldiers (every enemy looks the same) and you just go as far as possible from them to move on. The most challenging stealth moment in game? A guy walks around in circle at one area and you have to time your move to pass.... "Original score featuring 6 unique tracks." - like I said, I can appreciate the music it was nice "Short and sweet (40-60 minute play time)" - short indeed but sweet my (_!_), a waste of 60 min is not sth you call sweet. The store page is set up nicely, the screens make you think that this game has some really decent graphics and the description gives you the impresion that you are in for one interesing experience. NO. You are in for a one boring, unengaging and uninteractive walk among ugly looking locations which are covered in dense mist to cover it up... These are the type of games I really wish would have a different separate store on Steam...

Comment commencer ?
