It's fun but buggy. Many campaigns are killed by bugs if you play cross-play multiplayer, maybe also other forms of multiplayer, unsure. Over all very fun though.
Incredibly addictive, I totally was not expecting myself to spend so much time playing, I started off just wanting to try this genre for once but now I am even thinking about buying all the expansions (!) with no sale going on (!)
Pros

A lot of depth to all the strategic elements, incredibly fun to explore all the traits, societies, classes, tomes, empire progressions, and all other kinds of bonus and abilities and how they might fit together into one thematic and powerful build (hopefully)
The system of tips and hints are very helpful for someone that started with 0 knowledge about how this game should be played and what anything means. And yes I did have to use it extensively.
beautiful visuals with lots of options for customization, especially as we win more games that unlock more cosmetic options for banners, weapons, etc.
campaign maps are all very interesting with events and back stories

Cons

I'm not sure if every 4x game is as sophisticated as this one, but it is a huge learning curve with a lot of reading and experimenting. It might not be a full degree worth of contents but it can definitely require many many hours of full time learning to have a basic idea of what everything roughly is
I found that most of the time I can't undo an action, for better or worse. It is annoying that I have to reload from a save if I miss presses something, which I for sure did a lot of
Expect to lose sleep, lose will to go outside of your room, and generally disappear from your friends and families as this game entraps to to another dimension. I haven't lost my job yet but it is definitely looking more likely than before I started this game
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 6.14/day in the week to Aug 14 → 6.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,420 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Great game. You can make your own faction with tons of different pieces to create these which is surprisingly well ballanced. The AI is the best I have ever seen in a 4x game despite what people say. I think they mistake the fact that you make better decisions once you get good and thus win is somehow a mistake with the AI? Whatever the case may be, the AI is capable of playing the game competently without any cheats and it doesn't even have vision cheats which is a first for me in a 4x game. You can give the AI cheats if you want to though, which is somehow also bad according to some players? Anyway, this game is so good that I can no longer play pretty much any other 4x since it is just flat out a worse ecperience for me so I definitely recommend it. You don't even need the dlcs if you are unsure as the base game hat tons of content and if you have a friend with all the dlc you can let them create the game and you have all the things that they have available to you for faction creation and such.
It's an okay game that gets regular updates. If you have the space, install it on an SSD because it's quite resource intensive. If you want the actual full experience that resolves previous story arcs, particularly the events transpiring right after Age of Wonders 3, it's best experienced with the Empires and Ashes expansion, in my opinion it should have been included in the base game which is the only reason I bought it, the other expansions I could care less about, more nostalgia-bait or window dressing than actual substance. Kind of wish forms had permanent traits with minimal additional customization, especially since they do essentially jack all unless they make a significant portion of your units mounted or change your starting surrounding biome tiles, but what can you do? It's not bad, but I'm hoping for more in future updates with less paid DLC items, especially considering the amount that I paid for the game.
The replayability of this game is insane
Combineer de strategische diepte van Total War met de grand strategy van Civilization & Paradox. Gecombineerd met interessante lore, een sandbox & een fenomenale culture creator. Dit is het enige spel waar ik blij ben dat ze DLC voor maken.
game is fun but there are a lot of cons 1 enemy gets units and they are very obviously better than your units even after 2 pages of upgrades your heals are lucky to do 10 to 15 meanwhile the enemy gets heals from the same unit that heals for 30 to 45 and this also applies to things like tier 3 units regularly dealing 2x the damage your mythic units usually do and lord help you if they have any mythic units themselves its going to take your entire army to take it down i had 1 fire giant 2 storm giants a stone giant my lvl 11 wizard king and a lvl 9 warrior and i cant even get a summoned golem to half health with a full round of attacks 2 your debuffs are completely useless tried to use the moral mechanic and the enemy only routes when you've obviously won anyway I've had max procs of both the static -5 moral debuff and the -2 per turn and the enemy's moral just stays at normal using an army and spells that are specialized to lower moral and i cant get any units to route meanwhile the enemy can just use 1 spell and poof all your work is gone i don't need to explain how outrageously unbalanced this is 3 it seems the vast majority of the spells are useless they are super useful in the early game and fun to use but in the mid game it falls of hard and by the end game only a select few spells are even useful enough to cast and they are outrageously over costed and don't even kill a unit reliably like lava burst lvl 7 and it cant even kill a unit even with 3 casts and see my above statement about debuffs because it goes the same for damage over time and ground hazards bleeding and burning will deal 10 to 25 percent of health to your units if you walk through it but they aren't even an inconvenience for the opponent 4 your pretty much forced into roving around with the largest army you can because splitting your troops up means if you come across any armies that are close together your just going to loose there's no way ambush or separate enemies 5 the dragons i get are supposed to be hard but did we really have to let them cast 2 spells and get 3 actions in a turn as well as being damn near immune to everything and they respawn in only like 3 rounds i just had to quit a 130 round game because as soon as i kill one dragon the next comes and by the time my units get healed and get ready to move to counter attack the first dragon is coming up on my base again soft locking me 6 the diplomacy is a joke my most recent run i was allied with 3 of the dragon rulers as well as the other 2 rulers and at war with the other 3 dragon lords i cant coordinate my attacks with them i just have to hope they are attacking (they aren't see #5) and i cant even get them to join in the war on my side despite the alliance and the defensive pact they always just refuse even with almost 700 loyalty i just loose it all and they wind up going to war against me and this was asking them to join my defensive war pros really cool spells and units too bad they are all useless only thing that matters are the dragons and maybe 1 or 2 other mythic units plenty of governance options and buildings that feel like they do something when built and they have unique buildings that even have special sprites in game to sum it up they need to just balance the game better if your going to make spells that heal that powerful you need to make debuffs equally as strong or make debuffs harder to remove as is there's zero reason to do any debuff builds, make higher tier units feel impactful and not just in the opponents hands a tier 2 unit shouldn't be able hit for 1/3 of my giants health while that same giant can only hit 1 time and does 10 to 15 percent of the tier 3 units health and it would also be really nice if you made alliances useful as it doesn't prevent wars and I've never once had my allies uphold their defensive pacts unless they are already at war with that faction
Fun with superb replay-ability. Lots of DLC, but it at least feels like it adds to the game each time, rather than being content that should have been included at launch. Diverse achievements will have hunters coming back again and again. I keep coming back even though I hit 100% awhile back.
