It’s a lot like Civ, but instead of Gandhi coming at you with nukes, you’ve got Saruman sacrificing a portion of his orcish population to summon a Balrog on your capital city, Frodo’s halfling horde has taken over half the map and converted it to The Shire, Gimli just cast a spell that turned his dwarven kin into half-dwarf/half-naga creatures to better control the underground rivers, and you’re just trying to spread the good word of the Eldritch Horror known as Gandalf the Maiar with your army of religious zealots who will covert or crush all nonbelievers.
I had this game since release. I never really played it much. Gave it a shot but it didn't grab me. I still kept it though. For whatever reason, I decided to play it again this past week. Keep in mind that I haven't played it past an hour since release. Now that I have a bit of time under my belt, I would dare say that this is one of the greatest 4x strategy/RPG hybrids I have played. I am playing on a mega map with 9 factions with mega cities and I am having a BLAST. If you like strategy and RPG games, you should giver this one a try. Now I want all the DLC but... YIKES.
very fun game. it does require a decently strong machine tho. gameplay is fun. creating your own faction is really cool and there are A LOT of options. There is a bit of a learning curve but on easy and normal difficulty u can learn pretty quick. I personally like to watch youtube for a bit of guidance so i dont jump in completely blind but jumping in works too. U do need to have a bit of patience as it is a turn based game and u build up over time. very fun !
*** WARNING *** Game is infested by pricey DLCs. It will cost you a lot of money to play the "full" game. *** END OF WARNING *** Without a doubt the game greatest feature is the faction creation and living a fantasy of leading a specific "tribe". You can be a dragon, eldritch being, plain old human, a hare, vampire - you name it. Your nation can have one on specific paths giving it unique playing style and pros/cons. Gameplay is mainly centered around turn-based battles on hex grid, where you have to win them in order to proceed with progression. City development is rather simple, so there is nothing to say. A definitely cool feature, kind of similar to Master of Magic, are the magic books which give you access to unique spells.
nice
Bot says AMD USERS ITS ALWAYS YOUR GRAPHICS DRIVER just so happens to occur every time there is a new DLC. Then you go to the forum and see bot Joddi say the same thing honestly its seems to me this is just a bug that they refuse to patch so they can rush out the dlc get people to buy it and then after enough people complain a month later they will fix it. Once again its that time of year where they release a DLC that causes all AMD users to crash followed by having to wait for the patch to fix the game, i have no mods currently running reinstalled the drivers verified the integrity of the game files and completely changed my AMD Adrenalin setup to the supposed specs required, at this point its just frustrating I love the game series but its really annoying to know that i have to wait like a month or two after almost every DLC update to be able to play again. An excellent game that combines the 4x gameplay of games such as civilization with the tactical battles of HOMM series. It has a huge variety of archetypes, races, units and cultures, so that you can pretty much create the fantasy empire of your dreams and lead them to glory.
I wasn't sure about this game when it first came out. But with the changes made since and all the mods available it's become pretty great. You can design your own races and rulers to play as or against. Their appearance. Their strengths (and if you want an extra strength a weakness too), their appearance, everything about them. And if you don't like the heroes on offer, that's not a problem either. You can change their appearance, clothing, armour, names, whether they're male or female etc after recruiting them. You can even reset all their skills to choose ones you like better - and if you use mods for free and as many times as you like. The biggest fault early on was that with the limited range of tomes to research every faction by late game had researched many of the same ones and so had many of the same spells, skills and units. But with the extra tomes in the expansions and all the ones added by mods you can now design factions to research 25 or 30 tomes of your choice in the order you choose. So custom factions you make to play against won't have begun researching inappropriate units, spells or skills by the time you fight them.
