Bought the game on launch. It was okay, but lacked content. Came back 3 years later, and oh boy look at all that new stuff! So I buy $90 worth of DLC and now the game crashes on launch. After an hour of googling and manually editing the game files, I can now get past the Paradox/Triumph screens at launch and make it all the way to the title screen, where after 10 seconds of waiting I get "Age of Wonders 4 is not responding." Drivers are up to date, BIOS is up to date, I uninstalled and reinstalled three times, verified the file integrity. Nothing. Can't even get to the main menu. I played it on launch so I know my PC can run it. Very disappointing, I heard good things about the new content but I can't actually access any of it.
Look at the prices of those DLCs. You can literally get four of the best games ever made for the price of a single DLC for this game. It's greed. That's what it is. And by the way, you can create 90% of the contents of those DLCs yourself with the mod tools. Don't support predatory and abusive business practices.
Already annoying that you have to sign in just to play, but that game is useless for mutliplayer. You cannot do battles at the same time as other players. You'd think this would be a simple fix in the current century we're in, but apparently not.
The game itself is really good and fun, don't get me wrong. But the constant crashing, multiplayer bugs, softlocks, abysmal performance and other shenannigans are not worth the price of the game, let alone all the DLCs. I'll still continue playing because I am stubborn, but I cannot, in good faith, recommend purchasing this. Not for a full price.
Good stuff. Expansions get pricey but the game is good and there is endless stuff to do
Not played this in ages, I have the day off work today so thought I'd have a game and have a look the new content that's been added since I last played. Only to find the DLC that has been released now costs twice what I paid initially for the base game! Yeah, I think I'll play something else.
Great game but they make multiplayer broken after every update/DLC.
If you're not 100% looking for grand turn base strat. that feels like the Total War: Warhammer games.
It's a fantastic 4X game with deep mechanics. It isn't as infinitely replayable as some of the other big hitters in the genre, but I played ~200 hours, took a long break, and now I'm back at it again. I think that is due to how robust the gameplay is compared to those other ones, you invest more in each game than you would in a quick simple linear strategy. There's much more to do in a single session with AoW4 than a Civ game. Highly recommend this game for anyone looking for a good 4X. If Civ is like popcorn that you can just mindlessly snack on forever, AoW4 is a favorite meal that you love having from time to time.
Creating and customizing your unique faction is just too much fun. There are problems that this game shares with many other 4x games, but I think the good parts outweigh the negatives,
