The game itself is really good and fun, don't get me wrong. But the constant crashing, multiplayer bugs, softlocks, abysmal performance and other shenannigans are not worth the price of the game, let alone all the DLCs. I'll still continue playing because I am stubborn, but I cannot, in good faith, recommend purchasing this. Not for a full price.
One of my favorite game series, one of my favorite games for the last couple of years, and one of the best roleplaying tactical 4x's. Rarely crashes nowadays.
First off, I've played this game on a friend's PC for way longer a couple of years back and I really liked the game. It's fun. When it's not crashing into oblivion. I thought, ok, I'll wait for a year or two and then get the game for myself. After the first combat situation the game froze. I've tried fixing it, looking up solutions online but no luck. For the kind of money Paradox are asking, I'd expect a buttery smooth experience. The game really is a lot of fun. Different races, builds, skills, customization options... But the whole thing is pointless when they are printing DLCs like there is no tomorrow with little bug fixing. The price is just too damn steep for a game I have to fix myself afterwards. Obviously there are people for whom the game runs fine or they have found a way around the bugs but for me, there was no way around. Premium prices for a premium product? Fine. This is a very cool game but it is not a premium product given how often it crashes and how little was done in three years to make it stable. I cannot recommend it sadly since I don't know who else will run into the same issues.
chicken soup, but video game
great tactical depth and replayability
Bugs meaning you can get in locked states where you can't win if you don't have allied victory enabled because of an enforced alliance you can't break? Really dumb.
Age of Wonders 4 is a fantasy 4X strategy game where you create a faction, expand an empire, manage cities and diplomacy, and command armies in turn-based battles. Each campaign takes place in a different magical realm, with your people changing through cultures, traits, and Tomes of Magic. Pros ✔️ So many options for your faction - You can create everything from industrious rat folk and mystical elves to dragon rulers, giant kings, and Eldritch Sovereigns. The gap between those ideas is huge, and the game gives you enough tools to make each one feel like its own civilization. ✔️ The tactical combat is actually solid - Positioning, spells, unit abilities, and terrain all matter, and the battles blend naturally into conquering territory and building your empire. ✔️ Each world feels thought out - Realm traits, story events, ancient wonders, and random choices give every campaign its own history instead of feeling like the same map with different colours. Cons ❌ Your ruler has limited customization - The faction creator gives you so many choices, but the visual options for your actual character feel small by comparison. ❌ The DLC is expensive - I was gifted the extra content, but with the price attached to all of it, I honestly do not know how much I would have bought myself. ❌ The auto-battle AI is not smart - I will let it handle a fight to save time and watch my army get demolished, then reload, play it myself, and finish with hardly a scratch. Age of Wonders 4 is a huge love of mine. I have already lost far too many hours to it, and I fully intend to lose more. Some of the factions, worlds, and stories I created have even started sneaking into my latest D&D campaign. A game getting my brain going enough that I start writing new stories outside of it has a lot of value to me. Score 9.5/10 Wizard Towers - I have conquered entire realms and still want another turn to see how the story plays out.
