Adventures of Bertram Fiddle 2: A Bleaker Predicklement Adventures of Bertram Fiddle 2: A Bleaker Predicklement

Adventures of Bertram Fiddle: Episode 2: A Bleaker Predicklement, developed by Rumpus and published by Chorus Worldwide Games, is a bold and eccentric continuation of the Victorian-era detective parody that expands on nearly every aspect introduced in the first episode. Where its predecessor felt like an extended introduction to the world and its peculiar cast, this second chapter fully commits to scale, complexity, and absurdity, delivering a much longer and denser point-and-click adventure steeped in British humour, grotesque caricature, and elaborate puzzle design. The story picks up with Bertram Fiddle and his ever-loyal cyclops manservant Gavin finding themselves in significantly deeper trouble than before, framed for murder and forced to clear their names while navigating a sprawling and increasingly surreal version of 19th-century London. The narrative leans heavily into satire, poking fun at detective fiction, Victorian sensibilities, and even the adventure game genre itself. Rather than driving toward a tightly wound mystery, the plot unfolds as a series of loosely connected misadventures, each introducing new locations, suspects, and bizarre situations that gradually build toward a resolution. This episodic structure gives the game freedom to indulge in detours, jokes, and elaborate set pieces without being overly constrained by realism or urgency. Visually, A Bleaker Predicklement is immediately distinctive. The hand-drawn art style exaggerates proportions and expressions to an almost grotesque degree, creating a world that feels halfway between a cartoon and a Victorian caricature pamphlet. Characters are deliberately ugly, strange, and memorable, often designed as visual punchlines in themselves. Backgrounds are densely illustrated, packed with interactive details and visual jokes that reward curious players who click on everything. Animation is expressive and theatrical, reinforcing the game’s roots in traditional animation and giving dialogue scenes a lively, stage-play quality. The game’s humour is relentless and unapologetically niche. Dialogue is saturated with puns, wordplay, dark comedy, and absurd non sequiturs, delivered through full voice acting that commits wholeheartedly to the ridiculousness of the material. Bertram’s self-important pomposity contrasts perfectly with Gavin’s dry, understated responses, and their dynamic carries much of the game’s comedic weight. Side characters range from parody versions of famous literary figures to entirely original oddities, each contributing to the game’s off-kilter tone. While this humour will strongly appeal to players who enjoy British absurdist comedy, it can also be overwhelming for those less tolerant of constant jokes and deliberate silliness. Mechanically, Episode 2 adheres to classic point-and-click adventure design, but with modern conveniences layered on top. Players explore dozens of locations, collect and combine inventory items, and solve puzzles that often require lateral thinking rather than straightforward logic. Pixel hunting is largely avoided thanks to clear interaction cues, allowing players to focus on puzzle solving rather than interface friction. Control occasionally shifts between Bertram and Gavin, adding variety and enabling puzzles that rely on their differing abilities and perspectives. Puzzle design is ambitious and varied, though not always evenly balanced. Some challenges are clever and satisfying, weaving humour directly into their solutions, while others can feel obtuse or overly drawn out. The game rarely provides explicit guidance, and progress often depends on thoroughly exhausting dialogue options and experimenting with inventory combinations. For veteran adventure game players, this old-school design philosophy may feel nostalgic and rewarding. For newcomers, it can occasionally cross the line into frustration, especially when progress hinges on a single overlooked interaction. One of the most notable differences from the first episode is the game’s length. A Bleaker Predicklement is substantially longer, often taking many hours to complete, and this expanded runtime allows the world and characters to breathe. However, the increased scope also introduces pacing issues. Certain sections linger longer than necessary, and the central mystery can lose momentum as side plots and comedic diversions pile up. Whether this feels indulgent or bloated largely depends on how much the player enjoys the game’s humour and worldbuilding. Technical issues have been a recurring point of discussion surrounding the game. While patches have addressed many of the most severe problems, players have reported lingering bugs, animation hiccups, and performance inconsistencies that can disrupt immersion. These issues are rarely game-breaking but stand out more sharply in a genre where precision and flow are important. The uneven polish can be disappointing, especially given the care evident in the art and writing. Despite these shortcomings, A Bleaker Predicklement succeeds in carving out a strong identity. It is unapologetically weird, deliberately verbose, and deeply rooted in a specific comedic sensibility. It does not attempt to modernize the genre through simplification or accessibility, instead doubling down on the charm and complexity of traditional point-and-click adventures. For players who enjoy character-driven humour, elaborate puzzles, and richly illustrated worlds, it offers a memorable and often genuinely funny experience. Ultimately, Adventures of Bertram Fiddle: Episode 2 stands as an ambitious, flawed, and distinctive sequel that significantly expands the series’ scope. It may test patience with its pacing, puzzle logic, and technical roughness, but its creativity, voice acting, and visual personality leave a lasting impression. For fans of classic adventure games and absurd British comedy, it represents a rewarding, if occasionally trying, journey through one of the genre’s most eccentric worlds. Rating: 7/10
great, luv it!
Witty, entertaining, and the perfect amount of absurdity. Thanks for the sequel - I am looking forward to another adventure!
Another exciting chapter in the adventure! I really loved the puzzles and the eerie, unsettling style of both the characters and the story :)
Great game, much longer than the 1st game. Some good puzzles, engaging plot. Recommended! Even more when you've played the first game.
.
Fun, actually funny, and more thoroughly satisfying than the first. Puzzles were a good balance of difficulty.
