Like many people picking this up, I grew up playing the original Zoo Tycoon games. If you're here hoping to relive that exact experience, it's important to know that this isn't quite that. It feels more like a modernized version with visuals closer to Zoo Tycoon 2, but it also simplifies many of the building mechanics.
Compared to the original games, you're much more limited in how you design your zoo. You aren't building custom enclosure shapes or placing fencing however you like. Instead, you're placing pre-made exhibits, assigning animals, making sure they have what they need, and designating staff to care for them. It's a much more streamlined experience.
That said, I actually think this makes it a great middle ground between the classic games and Planet Zoo. As much as I respect what Planet Zoo offers, I found it a little overwhelming. This game keeps the focus on enjoying the animals and growing your zoo without requiring you to learn an incredibly detailed building system.
The animals themselves are adorable, and there are some really cute interactions that make spending time in your zoo enjoyable. My biggest criticism is that it never quite captured the same emotional attachment I felt in the original Zoo Tycoon games. Back then, even though your zookeepers handled the day-to-day work, the animals still felt like your animals. Here, everything feels a little more automated. It almost reminds me of the structure of many Roblox tycoon games: you place exhibits, add animals, assign staff, and continue expanding. It's fun, but it doesn't have quite the same heart and soul that made the originals so memorable to me.
I've enjoyed the few hours I've spent with the game, and I plan to keep playing to complete the different objectives. At the same time, I haven't found it nearly as addictive as the original games, where I'd lose track of time building my perfect zoo for hours on end. This one is much easier to step away from.
Overall, I think it's a solid game that knows exactly what it wants to be. If you're looking for a relaxing zoo management game with cute animals and a simpler approach than Planet Zoo, I think it's worth checking out. Just don't expect it to recreate the magic of the original Zoo Tycoon series. For me, it's a good game, it just doesn't quite capture the charm that made those classics unforgettable.
