Vanilla, pound for pound without any mods this is still the best true city builder to date. With that said the game has a huge modding community and even then, it still might be the best city builder. I have hundreds of hours in the game off of steam. However, the game runs sub 1080p out of the box. Easy fix. Right click the game in steam and click on properties. Where you see “Launch Options” copy and paste this line: -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 Bam there you go. If youre inclined to run it above 1080, just change the resolution numbers. Youll have to download a mod to fix the tiny UI though.
it's still highly playable in modern devices (with potato specs). But sometimes it crash and closes on its own. No auto save, you should save it every 30 mins.
After so many years away, I've finally come home. As a kid/teenager I've probably put thousands of hours into this game. The music, the sounds, the grime of building a rundown neighborhood - no other city simulator can match that. Cities: Skylines is a good game, but it's just too bright, too cheerful, too plastic looking you know? This is the only city builder that really captures that feel of an American city. I can't forget the hundreds of thousands of free assets/mods/maps available. There's just so much content available. Big shoutout to Simtropolis for providing a community gathering spot for 20+ years. Anyways, if you like city builders, play this. I doubt any other game in the genre will ever top it.
Good game. Feels more like a Sim City 3500 than 4. A good/average game on an excellent previous iteration as blueprint. Cant go wrong. The 2d graphics and animations by 2003 look updated, but also very much the same as Simcity 3000. They surely look better but leave a savory taste. It could have been seriously improved. The same goes for the gameplay. The game doesnt have any bugs and glitches to note, still, the problems you can face are only due to the 2003 time, which isnt exactly the game's fault. The technological innovation that we had during those years was unheard of back then. Moreover, we have no diagonal streets available, which is insane. It could have been done easily by that year. The game itself runs better and more fluid than the previous version, but the 2gb cap, makes the game sloppy, also remember the game only uses one core of your modern CPU, so if you system has a slow CPU, like an old laptop you will have a bad time. It depends on the Ghz of your cores. Thanks to modding community, its a MUST to use sc4pac, which is a mod manager for Simcity 4, along with NAM, 4GB patch, high resolution mod and several more as essential mods to play. For mods tips and instructions, go to simtropolis website. The community is great. Has been alive since 2003. You can find thousands of sprites, cities, regions, quality of life improvements and gameplay mods. I've played this for over a decade. I also have Cities: Skylines, which is kind of boring despite being in 3D, but SimCity 4 still gets me playing for a few hours a day. This is from back when EA used to make games that were actually good. It's worth adding that the soundtrack is also one of the things really well done in this game. I also really appreciate how well mods work to make the game more playable than it would be otherwise, like the Network Addon Mod and such, and the community assets will probably keep improving the game as needed.
