Bad port to great games. Worth playing, but know the port is missing a lot.
ZAMN is just how I remembered, except now I could finally complete it. Difficulty is still very hard as you get further into the game (guide recommended). The only negative I could say is this port removed the potential for saving high scores compared to the native versions. Other than that, it still is goofy, old-school arcade vibe fun. (No comment on Ghoul Patrol as did not play)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol is a nostalgic yet surprisingly demanding revival of two cult-classic action games from the 16-bit era, carefully preserved and reintroduced to modern platforms by DotEmu and published under the Lucasfilm Games label in collaboration with Disney. Rather than attempting a full remake or reimagining, this package focuses on faithfully presenting the original experiences while layering in modern conveniences such as save functionality, achievements, and bonus archival content. The result is a collection that feels deeply rooted in its early-1990s identity, for better and for worse, offering both a loving preservation of arcade-style chaos and a reminder of how unforgiving older game design could be. At the heart of the collection is Zombies Ate My Neighbors, a top-down run-and-gun action game that thrives on absurdity, frantic pacing, and constant pressure. Players take control of either Zeke or Julie, two unlikely teenage heroes armed with an eclectic and often hilarious arsenal, and are tasked with rescuing helpless neighbors from wave after wave of monsters. Each level is a self-contained maze filled with traps, dead ends, and enemies inspired by every horror trope imaginable, from shambling zombies and chainsaw maniacs to giant spiders, mummies, and alien invaders. The central tension comes from balancing exploration with urgency, as leaving neighbors unattended for too long can quickly result in failure. Combat in Zombies Ate My Neighbors is deceptively simple but relentlessly demanding. Weapons are finite, enemy behavior is aggressive, and the screen can quickly descend into controlled chaos. Learning which weapons are effective against which enemies becomes essential, as experimentation and resource management are just as important as quick reflexes. This design rewards familiarity and memorization, encouraging repeated attempts and mastery rather than casual progression. Cooperative play amplifies both the fun and the challenge, as two players must coordinate movement and ammo usage while navigating increasingly hostile levels. Ghoul Patrol, the sequel included in the bundle, builds upon this formula while shifting its thematic focus. Instead of a pure horror-movie parody, the sequel leans into a broader mix of supernatural and historical influences, sending the protagonists through worlds inspired by ancient myths, medieval battles, and surreal storybook settings. While the core mechanics remain largely unchanged, Ghoul Patrol introduces slightly more structured progression and varied environments. Some players may find it less immediately charming than its predecessor, but it offers a more expansive sense of adventure and a different flavor of enemy design that helps differentiate it within the collection. From a modern perspective, the re-release succeeds most in its preservation efforts. Save states dramatically reduce frustration compared to the original password systems, allowing players to tackle levels at their own pace without committing to marathon sessions. A built-in museum mode provides background material, including artwork and historical context, giving fans insight into the games’ development and cultural impact. These additions do not alter the gameplay itself, but they enhance accessibility and appreciation, especially for players encountering the series for the first time. Visually and aurally, the games remain almost entirely unchanged. Pixel art retains its vibrant charm, with expressive character animations and colorful environments that still communicate enemy behavior clearly despite the screen often being packed with action. The sound design, including music and effects, is unmistakably rooted in the 16-bit era, reinforcing the sense that this is a direct window into gaming history rather than a modern reinterpretation. For longtime fans, this authenticity is a strength; for newcomers, it may feel dated or rigid compared to contemporary action games. Difficulty is one of the most divisive aspects of the package. Both games are unapologetically tough, frequently punishing mistakes and offering little explanation for enemy mechanics or level layouts. This creates a strong sense of tension and accomplishment for players who enjoy mastering demanding systems, but it can also feel opaque and frustrating for those accustomed to more forgiving design philosophies. The lack of modern control customization or extensive quality-of-life refinements reinforces the idea that this collection prioritizes authenticity over accessibility. Taken as a whole, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol functions best as a curated preservation of two distinctive action classics rather than a broad reintroduction tailored to modern sensibilities. It captures the energy, humor, and intensity that earned the originals their cult following, while also exposing their rough edges and uncompromising difficulty. For fans of retro run-and-gun games, local co-op chaos, and early 90s game design, the bundle offers a rewarding and often exhilarating experience. For others, it serves as an interesting historical artifact—one that highlights both how far action games have come and why these particular titles remain fondly remembered decades later. I used to play this game non-stop back in the day on my Sega! I love this game! I am playing on PC with an XBOX controller. I have zero issues with the controls. The game runs great and saves and I have no issues. The only thing that bothers me is the music and sounds have changed from the original. the game plays great and is an awesome port (aside from the different music). Not sure what all these other reviewers are talking about; the controls are great! Overall 4 out of 5 stars because the music is not original (from what I remember). Would like to see more old games from Lucasfilm Games. Overall great port and I am enjoying the game!
calle pero elegante, no recordaba tan jarcor este juego
It's ZAMN, for the most part. So I have to recommend it. However, there are a few goofy things going on here. Screen tearing is an issue, though somehow it seems to resolve itself when my computer goes idle and comes back, resulting in the screen shrinking. After I turn it back to full screen the screen tearing stops. How odd. If you've played ZAMN to death and want to try Ghoul Patrol, just don't. I finally gave that game a shot because it was included but man.. that game sucks on every level. Slow and clunky. Enemies are harder to avoid now. The health system is strange. They added buttons to slide and jump, no idea why they did that. Maybe the movement speed is reduced so they can justify the slide mechanic but god that's an awful mechanic in this setting. Jumping seems completely useless other than needing to get on top of something with an item on it, which the first game handled perfectly well by simply not putting stuff in places where that would be necessary.
Even 3.19 for this game is too much. I'm actually surprised dot emu is involved in this. How the hell do you make a Super Nintendo game look and sound like the worse Sega Genesis/Megadrive port?! (please note before anyone loses their ♥♥♥♥, I like Sega too), Even the wide screen title screen looks half assed. I mean ♥♥♥♥ I could do better barely trying! don't misunderstand, these games are good (and tough especially the first one) it's just the collection here is really crappy except for the extras. only buy this game if you're too poor or more likely lazy to learn the better other ways you can play these.... This is the sort of standards I expect from limited run games, not dot emu.
