Yumori Forest is a violently stylish action game focused on fast-paced combat, chaotic boss fights and unforgiving difficulty.

This game needs some reviews on its page, who knew it would fall flat like this? Yumori Forest is a melee focused roguelite(lite). While Ruin of the Reckless goes for a more aggresive approach to combat, this game takes the more methodical side. The gameplay is very simple. Find 3-4 lanterns in each level, activate them, and kill enemies along the way. The occasional boss fight as well. It does this with pure simplicity, doesn't ask you to do much else with upgrades or anything else. You upgrade a few different stats at the end of each level, and there's a couple permenant upgrades in the menu to grab (I don't think any of them are actually required to win, which is a nice change of pace). It's more arcadey and less about items and decision making. That can either be seen as a great thing, or turn away potential players. The enemies are pretty varied in their attack and dodging patterns. Yes, the ai dodges around a bit, but not enough to make them too crazy. Since you'll be killing a lot of dudes, it's nice to know you actually want to have a different stratagy for each enemy. The bosses are what I think are the best part of the game. They're tough, they're mean, and fun to fight. I don't know how many there are, but judging from achievements, there should be 3 of them. I like these fights a lot, and they show the more careful side of the game. My gosh the art and sound. It's gorgeous to look at, everything is easy on the eyes and appealing. the sound of hitting an enemy feels great when it happens. The boss fight music is good enough to pay for. Very little issues here. Is this a long term game? I'm not sure. It has a few modes to mess with, but the level generation is a bit......bland. I think the combat makes up for this in some ways, but the level gen is a big dent in my overall thoughts. For 10 dollars, while I'm very happy with my purchase, you might be wanting more. If anything, grab this game on sale, it's fun! I give Yumori Forest an 7/10. There's thing to be desired, but overall I'm enjoying it.

Yumori Forest can be a decent roguelite around $5, but it lacks the variety to justify its $10 price tag. The game has limited visibility which changed depending on how much health you have left. I personally found its "fog of war" very atmospheric, although it can be somewhat frustrating when enemies hit you from blind spots. Yumori is only 40MB so it obviously has a minimalistic art and sound design. I like the look of the game but the levels tend to get repetitive due to the lack of visual variety. The combat is extremely basic. You get one sword attack, dash, super attack, and projectile. Also, you can bow to the enemies after defeating them which recovers some of your HP (I thought it was a very cute mechanic). Between each level, you can spend your currency on one of four stats that increase basic attributes such as speed, damage, stamina and life. While in the main menu, you can also unlock permanent bonuses and a few other trinkets. Overall, the game does not have enough complexity that I want to see in a $10 game, although the developer could fix that with some minor updates.
Pros:
+ charming pixel art + tight movement and interesting use of vision range + you can unlock some trinkets and colors for blood + "story mode" with bosses & endless mode + 3 leaderboards (2 of them are kind of silly though)
Cons:
- needs more RPG elements / more decision making - the stages are too repetitive - no controller support Overall Thoughts: 7/10 I don't mind the gameplay but I do want to see more power-ups and decision making. Having something like "pick one of three powers" would go a long way here. Also, I want to see more variety when it comes to level design. Yumori Forest is a bit overpriced for what it is. Well it's not easy

The bare visuals with bright pink blood is beautiful. As the lantern keeper it's your job to ignite the lanterns and light up the forest. However, there's a gang trying to stop you. Starting off the combat is tricky since you don't know what the enemies do. But as you learn it becomes much easier to expect their movements. They always do the same thing based on the enemy type. Meaning Yumori Forest lands close to the "Git Gud" line of thinking. Keep in mind, you are fighting the darkness too. At least a little bit. Meeting enemies out in the open where the forest is darkest is suicide. Not being able to see enemies wind up their attack animations makes it difficult. Such as when the spear enemies attack in their line. If they start in a dark area it can seem like they come out of no where. Especially since your zone of light shrinks as your health drops. Yumori Forest is great! The visuals and tight controls make it a ton of fun to play. I really enjoyed it. Quick Score: 4/5 Notes: Relatively short and simple action/arcade game. Normal mode is a decent challenge and can be completed on average in around 3 hours probably. Hard mode is pretty brutal and a pretty insane step up in difficulty from normal.
Low Key Wish more people played this game since its really fun, solid 5/7
Yes! I've been eyeing this game for a while and I'm glad I finally went for it. This game is brutal and cool and slick and rough in all the right ways. This is really something special, and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I'm looking forward to learning more.
Yumori Forest is a great little gem of a game. Great artsytle, a combat system both fun and challenging, and it's own identity. The overall amount of content is relatively small, so the $10 price tag may be a bit high for some, but it scratched a similar itch to Hyper Light Drifter and was made by one dude, so I think it's well worth supporting
