About
A programming puzzle game, but YOU CAN'T TYPE. Navigate and run pre-existing lines of code to make your output match the goal! Watch out for bugs eating away your code!
Each level of You Are The Code consists of prewritten code. You get to choose which lines to run in order to match the desired output. Each time you move up or down a line, the bugs will advance and try to erase your code! In some cases, maybe that's not such a bad thing...

🔸 EXPECTATIONS: a puzzle game with programming/coding involved. 🔸 REALITY: a logic puzzle game with programming code as a theme. 🔷 You are the code (YATC) is a puzzle game that, despite what the title implies, doesn’t require writing or fixing any code. Instead, the topic is used as a theme for the mechanics and backstory, which is about the player being trapped within the ‘YACT-OS’ (operative system), needing to escape. 🔹 What the player actually does is move up and down between lines of code with pre-written commands, activating them in a specific order so that the outcome matches each level’s goal. While the commands are super easy to understand, their combination makes for challenging and interesting levels. 🔹 There are plenty of levels (150 plus some meta) that, for good or bad, felt they never exhausted each mechanic, swapping commands and concepts every few levels, leaving room for future updates or community-made ones, since it includes a custom level editor, to make your own or play someone else’s. 🔹 My only negative regards the music, which I don’t think it matches the theme, specially the one with the church organ, in general feeling repetitive and distracting quite rapidly. 🔹 Visuals are nice (for a text-only game) and I’m glad the narrative is kept on the simple side. 💠 YATC is a game based on coding that presents a bunch of fun concepts and combination of mechanics, leaving room for more. Specially recommended for those who enjoy logic games, it made it to my top 10 puzzle games of 2025. POSITIVES: 🙂+ 😄+ 😍+ NEGATIVES: 🙁- music 😠- 😡-
For more puzzle game reviews, news and everything puzzle-related, follow Puzzle Lovers and check out our Steam group.
Each puzzle is about producing a specific text output by running prewritten commands in the right order. The game is a playful exploration of the many possibilities offered by a custom programming language, and relying on prewritten code makes it particularly approachable. Everything in You Are The Code takes place in the folders and files of a minimal computer. The puzzles are text files containing a small number of prewritten lines of code. You can select any line you’re interested in and run its contents. While the game deals with actual programming concepts, it never requires any typing. The goal of each puzzle is to run the lines in the right order and print characters that match a desired output. The programming language used within the game is based on common, explicit keywords such as run, store and output. Many puzzles involve swapping specific lines using (you guessed it) the swap command. Some levels also include literal bugs that eat away the lines they’re positioned at, removing one character every time you go up or down a line. At first the bugs may look like a problem, but when handled properly, their ability to alter the text can be the key to producing the required characters. The levels are segmented across folders; each folder relies on a new command or showcases a previously unexplored mechanic. The second half of the game relies on powerful system features such as global variables and variable name editing. The focus is on playing with many different rules though, so the puzzle complexity is always kept in check.
Fun puzzler! I enjoyed the variety of mechanics, particularly near the end where things get meta in the both the "some puzzles can affect others" sense, as well as the "run code to modify the code" sense.
Such a fun and unique puzzle game! I really enjoyed this. Can't wait for more levels 🙂
fun game, worth a play through
Excellent puzzle game where all the mechanics and interface are real programming commands (or adaptations of them) and their logic works perfectly. The amount and flow of new rules and commands tend to keep the puzzles on the simpler side (each chapter is short and doesn't fully explore the potential of the systems) but that is easily fixed with future content updates. Highly recommended for puzzlers fans programming connoisseurs
This is probably one of the better casual-puzzle games I've played that relies on the player developing and employing scripting logic. Almost immediately it represents integers as character values opposed to mathematical values and uses a step-sensitive "bug" system to refine string values and achieve desired output values while revealing an antagonistic force that you don't oppose but instead take advantage of by learning how it works and turning it into an advantage. As player progression adds complexity, you'll find more such examples that directly correlate to real world scripting and programming challenges in a capacity that is more approachable to even someone who may never have written a Hello_World script before. Highly recommended for puzzle lovers and anyone who actually enjoys the challenge of writing code to work inside a system. I would like to reinforce that this is NOT a programming game but simply uses puzzle mechanics that resemble some basic system concepts that can be found in memory management and functional script writing. There is no typed code for the player to fabricate and the syntax employed only resembles pseudo-code unique to the game meanwhile the antagonistic forces are unparallel to any specific constraints I am aware of in programming. However, the vehicle to progression resembles real-world programming concepts and the presentation requires the user assign syntax and strings to functions that must be considered into a succeeding order - and that is applicable to real scripted solutions. Having said all that, you CAN write levels for the game and share them in the Community Workshop. There is an official guide to the process here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3516560100
I loved this game a lot; I wanna write more reviews so here you go. It were fun puzzles and tho they werent too difficult, I liked it a lot. It introduced all (or a lot, havent quite looked into editor) mechanics with simple puzzles and showed off the range of what you could do with it. In the end there were also some harder puzzles. The story was nice too. I really liked it (quite honestly no idea what else I should write lol) :3
Nice chill programming like game, few tedious levels towards the end but overall very reasonable. The current state of the game intoduces all the concepts. In future it would be good to build more in depth levels with even just the basic concepts.
