Fun team vibes, Breach mechanics make missions get into the action faster compared to the first two games.
A tasty X-Com snack
Want more X-Com, but don't feel up to the commitment required to play through Enemy Within or War of the Chosen? Chimera Squad is here to provide you with some of that sweet, sweet tactical turn-based dopamine magic, without a huge amount of (hardly any, really) strategy and planning to bog you down. In the wake the events of X-Com 2, the elders are gone, but some of the other alien races have stuck around and made nice with us humans. So much so that there is a species-integrated police force that is tasked with bringing the perpetrators of a sinister plot involving the assassination of City 31's mayor. The missions are all relatively short, consisting of a single building with a couple of rooms. Things get kicked off each time with a bang, as your squad performs a breach, kicking in doors, blowing through walls, and/or sneaking through vents. Each ingress point will have different penalties and/or bonuses, so it's up to you how you want to do it. The longer missions will repeat this action 2 or even 3 times as you make your way through the building. Your squad is a diverse bunch, consisting of humans, sectoids, mutons, even those snakey guys. Each soldier has a skill tree that, while simplified compared to X-Com, is completely unique to them, so you're guaranteed a different experience every time you mix up the members. Strategy-wise, you have to manage panic within various districts and city-wide, as well putting your agents on civilian missions to increase credits, intel or research. There's gear to buy as the missions get harder. And that's about it. Very simple, but satisfying. I almost would've preferred the game to be a tad shorter as I was getting a tiny bit bored by the end, but, as an X-Com fan, I am ecstatic to have this game and recommend it highly to any and all other X-Com fans.
Unfortunately the change in formula is disappointing. I find the gameplay boring, the humor juvenile and the graphic devoid of inspiration. A total downgrade compared to previous titles.
Nice, neat and a bit different approach to XCOM franchise. I think it is both different and simmilar enough from XCOM for you to enjoy and play it.
This is easily the worst of the Firaxis X-Com games. The premise of an X-Com force comprised of humans, aliens, and hybrids is great, but having almost no control over what sort of soldiers you can recruit is not. Being dropped directly into combat where your units just scatter in the first turn is not, and the new turn system that leaves you no way to recover from the odd unlucky roll is terrible. Just went away from everything that made X-Com 2 so great.
I think this game is a complete downgrade in comparison to XCOM 2 on all fronts. If you liked XCOM 2, you'll probably also like this one, but it's depressing that it's a newer game, yet worse. Also has an incredible amount of bugs and glitches, and really, really bad writing. Overall I'd recommend saving your money and just playing XCOM 2, this one isn't worth the time, it's like a really bad DLC, not a new game, as it reuses everything from XCOM 2, yet somehow it's worse? I'm actually upset I've finished the game because it taints the flavor and lore of the XCOM universe.
Good game
Much smaller and simpler than Xcom 2, but still a fun game to sink 10-20 hours into, especially for the price
