If "Life is strange 1" and "Layers of fear" had a baby it would probably look like "What happened". I'm amazed at the game's visual design, the amount of detail is insane (for an indie developer), As for the atmosphere and the plot, the developers also did a very good job depicting a teenager's pain and loneliness, which are very intense. Some reviewers complained about the game being too high-school: well, guess what, it's a high school story, but quite mature and dark. When it comes to the puzzles, some of them are really imaginative and fun. Now, the cons. I'm all in when it comes to surreal scenes and creepy metaphors. "What happened" in that sense may stretch the formula a bit too much, being almost like a parody of walking simulators. Sometimes it seems like going deep into your own psyche means going underwater, to hell, to the jungle and to a library, and then falling through walls and walls, falling through pipes and walking down stairs and then being hunted by a shark. There's where some restraint would benefit the game big time. It seems as if the developers couldn't keep the core of the plot safe and sound while still exploring the depths of its ideas. They got lost on their way. At the same time, despite the game being bonkers and hallucinatory, it's also quite repetitive and exhausting when it comes to its dialogues and monologues. The game is way too self-explanatory and obvious, as if scared of not being clear enough. Consequently, while on the one hand it goes way too far exploring new landscapes (to the point when drug abuse, bullying, depression and suicidal thoughts seem like playing a dark Mario Bros parody), on the other hand the game suffers from being to plain, obvious and simplistic. The game is both too metaphorical and overly verbose Thirdly, "What happened" would also benefit from having better human figures and facial expressions. It's hard to sympathize with Pixar like, unrealistic creatures that still want to show cruel and violent animosity against the main character. Never too human, never too fake, stuck in an unsatisfactory middle ground, the characters lack the depth or the originality to be truly remarkable. They fail to carry the pathos and tragedy of the plot. Nevertheless, I still think "What happened" is an interesting addition to a long list of walking simulators dealing with mental health and self- /drug abuse. It definitely has its amusing moments, despite the formula being a bit too unbalanced. And the darkness it portrays is as real as can be.
This game is such a mixed bag of elements on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Some of it's textures, lighting, and level designs are super unique and quite frankly, amazing. But the character models, animations, voice acting, and writing are not at all anything I enjoy. I don't believe it's worth the $25 price tag considering I really had to push myself to play it, but just an hour in and the harsh flashing lights and strange FOV makes me a bit motion sick to play this game. Pros: The attention to detail and lighting is really solid. But what really shines here (see what I did there?) is the level design. These set pieces are mind bending and things are constantly shifting and they're really trippy (also saw what I did there?) Because your character is on acid. He's a high school student and while I know that's a real thing, I'd say it's at least uncommon enough to say it's not really relatable for me at all. One because I'm much older now and my emo angsty days are (right) behind me and I've never had an acid trip. Although I imagine this is exactly what it's like. Cons: Here comes a mountain so prepare yourself. The writing in this is that of an angsty teenager that's mad his girlfriend is with his best friend or something. I dunno. You're tripping on acid, it's sometimes a little weird to grasp what's going on. Like, you might feel bad for the main character if he developed an addiction to drugs because his best friend slept with his girlfriend, but from what I can gather, your girlfriend left you because you have an addiction. So...that makes sense to me. It's also the little romantic dialogue bits that feel like Star Wars Episode I quality. Like any moment the game is going to cut to Naboo, but whatever. The character models are not quite as detailed as the environment and the animations are really stiff. It just feels out of place given the amazing set design. Voice acting is pretty rough. Pretty safe to say English is a 2nd language here and there's probably translation pains from the script, but all of the dialogue feels really unnatural. I honestly think this game would've been better off with just text and no voice acting at all. It's just really distracting. Yeah I know I'm only an hour in and if it was strictly just "This game is slow paced" or something. Sure. I'd probably spend more time on this. But unless the voice acting, writing, dialogue, and character animations drastically improve out of nowhere, it's safe to say this isn't a game I find enjoyable. Despite the fact that the levels are truly, really, jaw droppingly cool.
A unique limbo nightmare with some cool ideas and some things that do not work very well. But I will say one section in particular is rather scary. Lots of secrets to find and multiple endings. A decent length if you try to go for everything. I have put some hours in and I still find myself finding new things to add to the experience. While not for everyone this game is at least memorable with its shifting limbo mechanics. The voice acting at times can be a little much lol but it conveys the nightmare good enough I suppose. All in all worth a try if you like silent hill type narratives with some general spookiness and cheese added on top. My favorite part of this game is the atmosphere of the shifting limbo sections. For example the school setting goes through multiple changes that give each one a separate feel and design. Of all the ideas thrown at the wall for this project that is perhaps the one that actually stuck the landing. The game received some updates and changes after launching in 2020 but as of now I think the updates have stopped coming but still worth the try for achievements or if you enjoy nightmarish scenarios. Hope this review helped you and try this game if this all sounds interesting.

This is a beautiful game. The visuals are stunning, and the attention to detail is awesome. Graphics, animations and special effects are 10/10. The story is good, and it addresses a very important subject. But the way it's told, it doesn't work that well imo. I finished the game in 5.4 hours, and I kept seeing the same things from start to end: how Stiles' life went off rails, the problems with his GF and his best friend, etc. I know it's important, but I got it after the first hour. Then I keep seeing the same things over and over, just told by different angles and situations, but in the end, it's almost like a recounting of the same thing. This means that I was losing interest after a while, even though I wanted to see how it ended. Gameplay has some issues too: sometimes I wasn't sure what to do, I was just running around trying doors and light switches. But I'm still giving it thumbs up. I enjoyed the experience, and again, it looks stunning.
The graphic was great, surprisingly great, the intro though.. WOW, every room and the sound, it was so great. The story was dark and emotional. I feel like some of it were a bit much. Speaking from personal experience with certain subject, I can say that
the voice part was pretty close, and the feeling of being caged
was also pretty close.
Really liked this. It is visually stunning all the way through. It has frustrations though. There needs to be more guidance on how to progress in these types of games. A lot of running around in circles.
