The incident left family and friends lost for words as everything seemed fine with the victim. And to think I only got knee deep in research because curator connect offered it to me- otherwise I wouldn't even realize I already possessed it from a previous sale XD. Granted, themes dealing with mental health are more widespread in video games. Though they tend to revolve around fictional premises (up for debate) such as in Town of Light, The Missing or Detention. Usually handled with respect and educate us on lesser known intricacies of mental disorders but others exploit or phone it in by slapping them with "psychological horror." What Happened (WH) is smack dab in the middle of that spectrum. It began with great intentions except it didn't stick the landing after all the huffin' and puffin', believe me it's a lot~
"Enjoy It- While It Lasts..."
The Gist: Stiles is your everyday angst-filled and depressed teen trying to survive going through the motions in high school. For the past year however, things have been escalating and on one fateful day- he spirals. A dear old companion, cheerleader and devil's advocate emerges and together they go on a trip of deja vu.
! Be mindful of your actions!

[+] PROS;
(a) Your Mind on Drugs! Not much in way of gameplay and so it's fair to call it a drug simulation. Your alter ego being your guide on what to do, judging you and taunting you- the bumbling introvert. There are venting journal entries to be found too, shedding light on his struggles. Pretty soon, he descends into incoherence and tasked with locating light bulbs while getting lost in the maze that is the drug-addled mind. There aren't a lot of ways to die but when you do, you enter multiple versions of "Limbo" and you have to seek the way out. Ultimately, the endings are the incentives to continue playing and they can actually be achieved in one go, provided you inspect carefully! Fortunately for me, I managed to uncover the alternate "bad endings" and then I simply 'continued' from the main menu. (b) Take It All In Now, the sheer amount of time, hard work that went in to the design of the school is obvious. Be it the variety of posters plastered throughout or props that cater to different classrooms! All wonderfully detailed and I must've spent the first hour admiring them. It's a living, breathing school so kudos!! The creative input is just nothing short of endless, creating almost unique set pieces to throw at you that you can't help but stop and stare. Since Stiles' school acts as his anchor, it only makes sense to revisit it a lot and it's spruced up each time to convey a different state of mind. Another gorgeous illustration of its visuals go into the Layers of Fear manipulation of "reality" where once you reach a dead end, you turn around and something's changed! This is done a lot and I couldn't keep up. It's sure to leave you satisfied!! The mirrored effects of drugs kicking in start off slow and psychedelic-like but amp up in intensity. So just take a break every now and then~ (c) Don't Feel- Just. Do. It. In keeping with the theme of the game, I'll let you find out WH for yourself! Instead, I'll go into what I liked a.k.a. what I found scary~ Firstly, the idea of a darker version of yourself is very much a nightmare. It knows everything about you, it ridicules, second guesses and clouds your thoughts. Technically it's still you in control but we all have our fair share of the bad, don't we? Secondly, I have to point out a character that I just loved; whose performance was natural and sweet. It's Rose! I absolutely fell head over heels because of what she and the flower represents. You'll see single roses throughout the ugly tripping and it's somehow reassuring. The phrase 'every rose has its thorn' couldn't be more true because like
Stiles, or rather you
just don't appreciate what you do have. Thirdly, I liked how it was on the nose about the people's tendency to overreact and replay that same moment of regret. It's tough to see someone going through it but what about those who keep it hidden? Makes you wonder... Finally the title, "WH" depending on the intonation or punctuation can imply many nuances. Is it out curiosity, a blaming tone or just explanatory?
[-] CONS;
(i) A Bad Trip Disorienting is an understatement for that initial gimmick of colors grows into unbearable and nausea-inducing the further you go. It's like they wanted to see how many filters and novel ways to rotate the camera could be fit in until people hurl. Then the angle suddenly zooms and jerks all shaky cam to direct your attention. Oh and head bob can't be toggled off so rest up every hour. (ii) Out of Stile Stiles is the protagonist but he's...bland and reserved. I liked the "Mind" / alter ego but he's just dying to be edgy and dark, comes off as a try hard. Other characters were standard teenage drama fodder, who we don't learn enough of to actually see them favorably... Also, the depiction of self-harm got so gratuitous. I'd rather not be shown any and just told (on second thought, talked my ears off too). Moderation, that was missing!! (iii) 'High' School!? Dude... Alter Stiles is like a preacher- that is if they were the ones telling you to give in to
the dark urges
. What we are treated to, is preachy, beating that dead horse over. Kid you not, by the end- I questioned what was the point of everything?! The game was better off cutting its price and runtime by half, which I think would have conveyed its message just as fine. (iv) Good Luck Unseeing That Some nitpicks are the notes which are somehow randomly generated? Because every time I locate one, I make a habit to leave that drawer open. But next time I came back, it was moved to a different drawer!? Plus, an achievement bug, where it said I "collected all notes" but then being the rebel I am- I found more! The amount of phasing objects were off-putting. A note standing on its own protruding out the cabinet or grass and other foliage coming through drawers. The game may question reality but that's just sloppy. Even some objects are placed too close to another and when you open the drawer, it goes into the other object. Little things like these can be damning!
"More Like, What COULD'VE Happened...."
Prognosis? WH came from a wholesome, noble place by not victimizing those who have considered suicide. Bringing that vision to life proves arduous- ending up mundane, overstretched for the most part though it has its moments of clarity. I am an immense advocate for mental health so I can appreciate the sentiment and was really hoping it'd be something special (which it is, just not all the way). What it did exceptionally is in its breathtaking visuals of a life-like school setting and unpredictability of Stiles' being under the influence. However, such a momentous stride to mental health awareness calls for impeccable execution and a certain degree of sensitivity that was just not present. And with a dull and one-dimensional cast, it's challenging to like let alone care for them... The same goes for the at first alluring transitions that became obnoxious and induced in me enough motion sickness for my lifetime. Though I "don't recommend it", I'd advise picking it up when its price is slashed as it's still fairly enjoyable and an innovative piece of entertainment- I guess that's why it hurt even more~
5.8/10
WH churned my stomach for all the wrong reasons, but I can't wait for what follows!
What Happened
After about seven hours of play I was asking myself the same thing so read the entire review. I disliked this game when I started it – and yet, I kept playing. I wanted to know more, the art and stunning visuals kept me going. Stiles kept me playing. The game opens with a teenager in high school dropping acid. Then he gets a swirly and is beaten up. So yes, the subject matter is very dark: suicide, bullying, depression, drugs. Just being a teenager is hard enough. Add all those things together and it is not going to be an easy comfortable play. The game takes you on a bad trip from the perspective of a depressed teen. He has had a very good run of bad luck. Some scenes are tortuous. You see how mean kids can be in high school; hopefully actions you see are no longer tolerated. I really felt for Stiles, the teen. This is an Objet d'art in so many ways. You are forced to go slowly at times and see… what did I see? You will ask yourself that too. You are forced to experience hallucinogenic effects. Synapses on drugs are misfiring and taking you deeper into his mind and witnessing the things he has been going through. At some point in the game you are told the outcome of the game is dependent on how well you “treat Stiles”. I guess I missed the memo on how you control that. You do not click a dialogue choice or select an action. Was it bad when I didn’t run fast enough through the burning forest and dodge a tree that fell? Is it bad because I still have not managed to out-swim the shark and make to the safety of a classroom I have to find only by trial and error? There is a lot of trial and error in the game. You are lacking clear direction in where you will find what. You must enter every room you have access to in the high school over and over and trigger memories. That does get tedious, but the amazing visuals kept me plodding along There are some clever unique puzzles, they may feel overused after a while. There are notes to read, items that will jog a memory. Some memories are good; some are not. You question if what you saw was even the real memory. Game Play: There is an utterly unique way you access menu features. That is a hint on how you will proceed at times. The start feature is so appropriate. Perfect for this game. You have the usual set-up options, the game autosaves after a chapter/memory. You will know when you have completed it. Traditional WASD movement. A right click flips you around; that was a nice addition. I doubt I will be able to progress because I am not good at action and speed. In fact, I just received an achievement for being eaten by a shark 20 times. I wish I could though... I had no screen tearing, no lag. no problems running it.

Very creative, very impressive work. talented people at work here. Its a walking simulator with a very strong story, and it is one big trippy experience from start till finish. If you are impressed by a very weird but well put together story walking simulator, i think you owe ur self to check it out. Talented developers that knows the mechanics of game developing.
Just BIG NO. I was intrigued me with its description - a journey through the fears and depression of the American teenager, Stiles. As, unfortunately, I know this topic quite well, I decided to check how does the game relate to reality, despite the slight fear of horror and thriller games productions. Everything makes you mad in this game. Controls? Mad. Saving? Maaad. Translation to other lang? Oh my. MAD. Graphics? Is that Unreal Engine or The Sims? Maybe there is at least hope in the story or in character creation? SIKE. For me this is not a "journey through anxiety and depression", but Drug Dealer Simulator from the customer. Even after gradually learning about Stiles' past, it's hard to feel anything except for the thought of "stop taking drugs". Mental illness is a serious topic. The Genius Slackers should stay away from it. I've seen many patients with various disorders and as long as the producer wanted to create a title about states anxiety-depressive, this game has little to do with it. Closer to schizophrenia or psychosis and addiction, but the reality is not like American teen series... or in this game.
What happened is a story driven walking simulator that follows our main character Stiles. At first i thought Stiles was a shy kid that got drugged and bullied but as the story develops i was totally wrong. If you are a walking sim fan, you need to have this game in your collection. The game has some flaws but the positives outweigh the cons. A lot of people hate walking sim and give them bad reviews but this is a good one not an asset flip. A definite buy as It is half-price right now and hopefully it will be on sale during Christmas but that i don't know. Very artsy and creative for sure. Might appeal to teenagers like our character here. Here is a quick preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqusEbUx2kU
This is a hard pass. What Happened is a directionless, nauseating experience, with overly long cutscenes, that just go on and on without any creative storytelling or competent dialogue. The game is just a mess, with very little gameplay, confusing narrative and distracting visual effects. I have no idea how this happened, because the general art direction is commendable and the environments look fantastic, and clearly whoever made the cutscenes knew what they were doing. However, I just couldn't bare the game anymore. It was frustrating, disorienting and vomit inducing. I couldn't care less about the unlikeable characters or the plot that didn't go anywhere. The game is like that scene in mother! where we follow Jennifer Lawrence while her house collapses. It works in a movie, but it sure as hell doesn't work in a game. Maybe that was the point considering this was someone's acid trip. But I'd rather sniff glue than have this on my hard drive.
On a positive note, this game has a very strong visual style and interesting scenes. A lot of work obviously went into the making of this game. The writing is overly melodramatic. It feels a bit too much, especially since there is no reason to care about any of the characters in the game. They lack personality and depth. The game goes on and on from one anguished scene to the next without bringing anything to the table plot wise. I wish there was an option to "maybe" recommend the game, since it has its moments and it manages to capture a certain dreamlike atmosphere. I'm giving this one a thumbs down because there aren't enough puzzles or action elements to make up for the mediocre storytelling.
