Several years ago, we were promised controller support. That never materialized. So I'm calling it. I've sat on this game, installed, for those several years. There is no controller support. It is unreasonable to expect anyone to mod their own in (it feels like "just one game" but it quickly becomes the sum total of every "just one game" that does this to people). This game is simply unplayable if you have limited motor control and need more accessible human interface devices. The entire system is too complex to map cleanly to a controller via steam input mapping or a tool like antimicro, and desperately needs native controller support and interfaces. I have tried, but it didn't work out for me - and that, mind, was when the game was simpler. I really wanted to love this game. Every time features come out, I look at the list and go "yeah, I'd love to play that". I'm sick of it making me feel like I wasted my money so I could sit and hope the feature would be on the way. I would be willing to change my review if the game ever adds proper, accessible controller support.
This ia a great game with a lot of potential but it has a fatal flaw, zero navigation tools, the map you CAN make in the game is pretty useless and since the camera is top down your limited vision makes normal navigation a chore, couple that with all the areas looking very repetetive within a location you have a recipe for being lost VERY easily and once that happens its basically hopeless finding your way back. im sure the developer doesnt want to hear this but the game needs better navigation tools without them, the games fine until you leave the first island and on the trek back you are dumped into an unknown area of the map you have never been it with absolutly no indication where your home is because island to island travel is done via a manu and teleportation
Not going to refund this one, but this isn't a game for me. Its a bit too clunky.... But... This one feels cruel to thumbs down or get a refund, its a good effort of a game and when that happens... I can't let my own lack of patience and furstrations towards the game go. The creator(s) has at least my support at least, good job, its a good game, just not one for me. I can see the attraction for those with tons of time and patience for it. Its like other survivor games, but has too many tools and actions to do and too much to learn at the start. If the entire game was made simple... It would actually make the game 10x worst and not better. Usually I comment if a game is too hard for newbie or people who want to learn a game in 15 minutes like myself... But that doesn't do this one justice. The game is GOOD because its got a fiddle and steep learning curve. Its good because its trying something new and different to Minecraft and other similar games. The games... Too cheap and I think that is bad. Less then £7 for a game with a lot of potential to be a nice great little piece? This should be in the £15 range min. Don't abandon it, please bring it out of early access. I'd like to see it leave Early Access.
Great game to chill out and explore/fight/craft to awesome lofi-vibes music. Devs listen to feedback and push bugfixes and QOL frequently, while still not neglecting new features. They have their priorities right. If you want a cool survival game to get happily sucked into, give this a try. Good for casual players, hardcore players, and completionists. I would recommend using only cosmetic mods for a while (read: Early Access), though plenty other cool ideas exist in the Steam Workshop. The Fantasy Customizations mod never seems to break, no matter how many updates go by, and adds a lot of personality to your character. Most other mods seem to get a bit left behind, as the game changes significantly (mostly behind the scenes) with every update. Once Wayward settles down on major changes the modding community can take off, though. I look forward to seeing where this game goes! Major props to the soundtrack- I get instant serotonin upon loading up the game and hearing the music start. It's also dynamic (can be changed in settings if you don't like this) so it changes based on your situation, which is a nice indicator for me since I have bad vision and might miss something otherwise. Honestly, the audio feedback in general is helpful and great for accessibility. The game is customizable to be as menu-lite or menu-heavy as you want. Set everything automatic in your toolbar and just walk into trees to chop them, or go through a menu to choose which action to take. It can be overwhelming at first, but it's there to help you- use as much or as little of it as you want. Controller/Steam Deck play is kinda meh, but they're working on it over time. It's really meant to be a mouse/keyboard game. Tl;dr, Wayward is chill vibes survival with very few bugs and good QOL, new features on the way, Steam Workshop support, and responsive devs. Give it a chance if you like the genre. :)
As a new player going into this game blind, I spent the last 39 minutes not knowing what exactly to do. After finally figuring out the crafting system basics, I finally began placing down a floor. Before I knew it I was starving to death. Went to kill an animal, could not harvest any meat from it. Went to a couple trees that stated they had fruit, and tried harvesting them, no fruit ever dropped. Decided I guess I'll just continue crafting till I die and get my food refilled that way for now... progressed a bit more before dying. Realized you respawn with 10% stats, already starving, and your inventory does not remain on your corpse but instead explodes everywhere... and this is on a CASUAL difficulty playthrough. Complete lack of introductory tutorials, unless you want to read through paragraphs of text dumps in a "tutorial menu" which is an extremely lazy way of introducing someone to your game. Maybe in the future this will get better, but until then I do not recommend this game unless you are a fan of the no-hand holding experience that is in no way "casual".
Rough game in the beginning, but once you learn all the systems and quirks it has, it is a good game with a lot of potential. If you want to play with friends, I recommend first playing a singleplayer game because the time stops if you don't do anything (classic roguelike/turn based gameplay) so you have time looking at the tooltips of items and the crafting menu (it is kind of like Terraria crafting, you will discover the item craft if you have some materials to craft it, no need to have all the materials to see it though. Once you discover a crafting recipe, it stays in your crafting menu forever.) while in multiplayer, the turns are real time instead, so hunger/thirst, etc don't stop if you don't do anything.
At first I found this game rather boring and tedious, it seemed like a nightmare to survive and that EVERYTHING was out to get you (cause it was). Thankfully the dev revamped the entire reputation system so chopping down 2 trees would no longer give you the status of a bloody war criminal. I've been playing on and off for a bit now and I am enjoying the crafting system, you genuinely feel like you're improving and unlocking more things to craft. Creating your first "base" is pretty time consuming and confusing at times but once you finish it will feel like an achievement. The game offers dungeon-crawler-like aspects, it is turn based and has a permadeath mode, descending stairs or traversing to the east side of the map will increase difficulty. My biggest problems at the moment are the slightly overwhelming UI and the pathetic durability of glass/clay bottles, with low chemistry skills you can easily wreck bottles just trying to purify some damn water. The soundtrack is atmospheric and definitely suits the game, there are a reasonable amount of tunes but I would love to hear more! Nonetheless I would recommend this game to people who like high complexity rougelikes and survival/building games. Updates are somewhat infrequent but they are high-quality, I appreciate that the dev is trying his best to improve the game as much as possible. Also definitely has more content than it's current price tag suggests!
A very fun survival crafting game, with lots to do. The game has a lot of depth in its crafting system, and can be very challenging at first. The game is still in early access, and if you're not already a fan of difficult roguelikes and survival crafting games, it might not be for you, but if the genre is something you're interested in, the game offers much more than just about anything at its price point. Updates are somewhat sporadic, but the developer is active on their discord and open about what is being added to the game.
great game, incredibly hard
