This is very clearly a game for a very particular sort of player. The graphics are rudimentary, the 'action' is turn-based and mostly conveyed through text, there is no real plot or overarching objective. But if you're the kind of person who likes realism, historical settings, or true survival experiences, appreciates an open world and a self-directed experience, and can get adjusted to a higher-than-normal learning difficulty, then this game is surprisingly deep, engaging, and rewarding. And in spite of it's age, this is a game that you can trust to continue to be updated well into the future, with additional realism and detail being a focus. It's a game I played, liked, but ultimately bounced off of, when I was younger. But revisiting it in my 30s, I've found it's become one of my favorites.
They should have gotten as much love as Dwarf Fortress
Amazing game. The devs have a vision -- detailed, realistic ancient Finnish survival -- and they go all-in on the concept. Entire updates focus on things like adding a way to make cords out of tendons, or needles out of bones. Killing an elk will net you months' worth of food if you can preserve the meat, because the nutrition data for everything, from berries to fish to meat, is pulled from real-world databases. For me, these details do far more for immersion than the best graphics engine ever would.
I feel like this game could be cool, but it just seems like there's only one way to play it and if you don't play it in that way, you're just going to slowly die. Traps, traps, traps, fish fish fish. I don't ever get to do anything but that. I want to explore the world but I can't when my character has to eat every 5 minutes. I do ration my food and I still starve. The crafting system seems kind of limited for being a game with constant updates from the 90s too.
I had played more in free version. This game is the only things that motivated me to go on vacation on finland in the future. The realism, narrative is really complement with depth roguelike survival. 10/10 thank you dev for your dedication
Still a great game and very much worth playing in 2026. Really enjoying surviving in modern day Finland. Its a magical place where a stone weighs more than a rock! a truly great open world survival game
Bottom line: The developers still support the game after decades, and there's a modding community that adds many optional items and features. If you are on the fence on this game, I would recommend watching youtube let's play series, if you find yourself getting lost in the emergent narrative, I would recommend buying this game, which crafts those experiences when one has familiarity with the controls and survival mechanics. Truly an awesome experience. Takes some time to get used to the controls, just like any roguelike game, but beyond that learning curve is a deep, immersive and (for me) educational game. I find myself launching this game after a long day at work, and while survival in this game is a whole different type of struggle, I find it is an enjoyable and fun experience. For me it scratches the same itch as walking in the woods on a quiet day.
The only game I know where you can eat your own dad.
This game is excellent and especially excellent on Linux, which I have exclusively played it on for an amount of time I that will remain unstated to spare the reviewer's feelings.
One of the first rpg I played. Still on absolute blast to play to this day. Also hard as going solo in Iron age should be.
