Aggresively Mediocre
Sometimes you get games that, despite their seemingly long length, never really feel like it, as either their narrative or gameplay, or sometimes even both, carry you through with an experience that leaves you spellbound, and before you realize it, you've probably spent over a dozen hours in that game. Monochroma is NOT that kind of a game. In fact, I would go out on a limb and say it's the opposite, as despite its rather short length - it took me around 4 hours to finish, I kept wishing for it to end sooner. The game is yet another side-scrolling puzzle platformer, in the vein of Limbo and Little Nightmares, except y'know, just plain tedious to play. Hell, even excluding those giants in the genre, I recently completed another puzzle platformer in the same style - White Shadows - and honestly, that was a much, much better experience overall. Admittedly, my biggest gripe with the game comes from the really crappy physics engine it seems to use, which comes to a head during a specific puzzle section where you need to stack a falling box upon another on a moving platform. Except, due to how it is programmed, you can't actually push the box like a normal person; instead, it keeps rolling like a barrel, despite, surprise, surprise, it being a cube upon a flat surface. That was the very moment that solidified my dislike for the game, which had already been building beforehand. The other reason being there's no dedicated jump button. Instead, for some weird reason, the game maps jump to the up button, which is just a very strange design choice in a game that also has verticality to it. I've no idea what the devs were trying to do with it, but the end result is that, since both movement and jump are mapped to a single button, anytime you're moving vertically, say climbing a rope or a ladder, the moment you hit either the left or right button by mistake, the character will jump off the thing like Tarzan. Overall, this was a rather frustrating experience. It's still not terrible but with how many games there are on steam even for this specific genre, why you spend a couple hours on this?
Monochroma is almost a good game.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. it's really not even a story, you help you're brother, Yeah another game where your helping your brother through life, Story of my life. It really reminds me of Limbo, This is a dark 2d platformer that looks great in the store. timed puzzles, die to continue rinse and repeat. The game feels unfinished a lot of things don't seem polished. In my opinion it's not worth the price listed as $19.99 and another $9.99 for the collector's edition DLC As of 8/15/24
Nice and short adventure similar a bit to Limbo. Explore corrupted city as two kids and try to save each other. Visuals are set in 3 colors. Puzzles are simple, some unique but mostly it's platforming. Worth checking out.
Una entrega que recuerda mucho a Limbo aunque cuenta con sus propias mecánicas e historia, una buena experiencia con un final épico. (77/100)
Monochroma is a poignant puzzle-platformer that masterfully blends a simple mechanic with a heavy emotional atmosphere. You play as an older brother carrying your injured younger sibling through a dystopian 1950s world, and that core act both protective and limiting shapes every moment of the journey. What stood out: The Central Burden: The core mechanic of carrying your brother. It slows you down and limits your jump, making every puzzle and platforming section a thoughtful calculation. The added rule that he must be left in lit areas creates constant, tense logistics. Visual Storytelling: The stark black-white world, pierced by strategic splashes of red, is stunning. Atmospheric Weight: From its rainy cityscapes to creepy factory interiors, the game’s moody, 1950s dystopian vibe is perfect. The sound design and score immerse you completely in its somber tale. Forgiving Pacing: The puzzles are environmental and satisfying to solve. A generous checkpoint system ensures that trial and error never becomes frustrating, keeping the focus on the atmosphere and story. I was pulled through the story in a compelling 4 hour playthrough. The experience was focused and emotionally resonant, and while I didn’t pursue all the achievements, the main narrative journey felt complete and impactful. A couple of very minor physics quirks did little to detract from the whole. If you value atmospheric, story driven indies like Limbo and appreciate a game that trades words for a powerful mood and a unique central mechanic, Monochroma is an easy recommendation. It’s a concise, artful experience whose haunting ending and poignant relationship will stay with you.
+Emotionally Moved. +Two brothers. +Commendable environments. -precise timing execution BS for navigation.
