About

Warlord: Awaji is the second entry in a series of immersive strategy games created by Darkmatter Games. Step into the shoes of a legendary samurai warlord, given special command and orders from the Emperor to conquer an entire island and save a regime teetering on the edge of collapse.
A unique combination of first-person strategy elements places Warlord: Awaji in a genre of its own. Immersive strategy, pioneered by Darkmatter Games, fixes the player in the shoes of their character, while presenting them with complex strategic gameplay. Lead an army, construct your camp, conquer villages and forts, and disrupt dynamic enemy forces in a sprawling open world–entirely from this immersive strategy perspective. Turn the tide of battle by engaging directly in the action yourself, fighting alongside your own hand picked warriors fully in real time.
The world of Warlord: Awaji is a sprawling island created using real heightmap data of its eponymous location, replete with dozens of temples and shrines from real life. Travel the roads cautiously and keep your eyes on the treelines, as civilian convoys and roaming warrior bands criss-cross the open world in real time. The local clans will react aggressively to your exploits, so choose your actions carefully. Strategically target strongpoints to weaken enemy quick-reaction forces. Capture rival clans' shrines to boost your spiritual aura and harm theirs. Work with esoteric warrior monks to curse your enemies and coordinate powerful coalition attacks.
Your warriors are your most important weapon. Recruit and maintain a powerful retinue of samurai. Use conquered land to promote leaders and expand your army's capacity while organizing its battle formation in any way you like using an intuitive drag-and-drop menu. Each individual has a unique name and gains experience over time through heroic action. Give your best warriors advanced weapons and armor to boost their lethality in combat. Form diverse groups of melee, ranged, and cavalry troops. Mix and match to find the best army composition and crush the opposition.
Construct a samurai war camp anywhere in the open world. Pitch tents and provide your troops with a variety of needs, including sleep, rest, and sustenance. Put up screens and fences to establish a perimeter. Set guards to keep watch in the dark hours of the night. At any time, you may pack up and relocate your camp, allowing for complex strategic maneuvers. Decide where and when to set up your base, and which direction to move in as you explore the vast open world.
All of the weapons, armor, structures, names, and gameplay elements are inspired directly from extant literary, iconographic, and archeological sources. Darkmatter Games, with the help of world leading experts on samurai warfare, has painstakingly recreated the 14th century world of medieval Japan in unrivaled detail. Historical authenticity is the core element of the Warlord franchise. Prepare to experience the visceral world of the samurai like never before seen.

Feels like if Kingdom Come Deliverance, Ghost of Tsushima, and Mount and Blade had a baby. Pretty damn good.
Great game, a great open world ripe for conquest. Organize your army, organize your camp and go on a conquest of glory and plunder. Nice follow up to Warlord Britannia.
this would be a really good game if you had more to do in it, average settlement has like 5 bad guys and its honestly boring

The Warlord series at its core is a simpler version of Bannerlord. I was extremely charmed by the first game (Warlord Britannia) - the element of managing individual troop promotions as you build out your legion, and setting-up your fort made the army feel very personalized. It was awesome to exit your camp and visibly see your army marching out in a column behind you. Performance aside, Warlord Britannia had enjoyable logistics & army management, as well as a relatively dynamic world - plus the Roman theme fit perfectly. Warlord Awaji feels like a boiled down version of Warlord Britannia. The performance is significantly better, but what you gain in optimization feels like a loss everywhere else. I feel like I have less control over my army with fewer formation choices - the soldiers pretty much stand in a line and you get to pick between 'hold' or 'charge'. There is only one way to get resources which is conquering territory, so the game-loop feels repetitive of: (1) recruit soldiers, (2) march soldiers to enemy hamlet, (3) win for resources and march back to camp, (4) recruit more soldiers. Diplomacy doesn't feel impactful. This game was fun for an hour, but I find myself returning to Warlord Britannia even with the poorer performance. TLDR: It's a decent game, but would have preferred a Warlord Britannia sequel/remake with focus on optimization. Thumbs down for now. Maybe get on sale, but I'd hold for some fixes and additional content
A lot of the bad reviews stem from people envisioning a Warlord: Britannia 2.0 in a different time period. While both have a lot of the same features, they are radically different. Awaji is more for those who enjoy building a custom army, equipping your troops, and creating an in depth base. Britannia is more for those who enjoy massive scale, historicalness, and structured armies that you "unlock" as opposed to customize. In short, Britannia is more rigid: Step 1 -> Step 2 -> Step 3; Legion 1 -> Legion 2 -> Legion 3 Awaji is a lot more open ended and allows the player to decide what they want to do. Want to be peaceful? Go ahead. Want to murder everyone and burn everything? Go ahead. Want to have a spear army? Want to have a horse army? etc. The Awaji world also feels much more alive. It feels more like a genuine world rather than a killing and conquering sandbox Britannia was. Furthermore, there's probably ~40-60 hours of game time. The map is absolutely massive. If you're reading the negative reviews, remind yourself that the majority have barely completed the tutorial before formulating an opinion on the entire game. There's so much more to the game as you advance. It gets wayyyy more difficult, in depth, strategic, and fun as you progress. TL;DR Get the game. It is different than Britannia, but has it's own quirks. The world is more in depth and alive. The game focuses heavily on customization rather than rigidity.
Warlord: Almost There
What I Liked My problem with games like Mount and Blade is that they are too complicated. What I like about this game is that it focuses on the combat most of the time, leaving me to do things that I like to do. The base building, more like camp building, is also pretty fun. It is nice to go from a few small tents to a fully decked out camp that looks neat almost anywhere it can be placed. What I Did Not Like While I do like the game, there are just some minor issues that prevent it from being great. While the combat is good and the game attempts to build on to it, the layers end up being boring. Eventually a new weapon type is unlocked, or a new building to attack, but it just never adds to the game. I am still going to point to point zerging until I win. The initial load time is bonkers. It slags up my entire PC, and a couple times I had to force close the game. Why I Stopped Playing I enjoyed what I did over the 12 or so hours I played, but I wasn’t interested in doing the same thing for the next 12 hours. Disclaimer I have been a gamer for over 30 years. I tend to play mostly PC games. I also bounce around between games A LOT. I may purchase a $70 game and play it for 2 hours or spend $10 on a game and spend 50 hours on it. Even if I played a game for a short time, it does not mean it is bad. It just means another game caught my attention. I also complain about flaws in games a lot, even about the littlest of things. Keep that in mind when reading my reviews. If I do not have a complaint, then the game must be special!
i'm finding the game very enjoyable, while combat is simplistic, tactics aren't really a thing and the base building feels more for something to do in between absolutely crushing poor militia with ridiculously over powered soldiers, i find it to be a good game for just switching my brain off and just enjoying the music and letting heads fly. As it stands i think its still worth the asking price since its low as is but if the devs continue with updates and patches the games got the potential to chew up a huge portion of your time and i hope it does get the tlc and polish i think it deserves
You've done it again, Darkmatter. I know you are solo, but this was totally worth the wait. I appreciate what you do, man.
