Long time player's review of Xsyon
*Buy To Play No Sub* - I say this here because a lot of people do not understand this. This game has been in early access for 10 years. It's been worked on by pretty much 1 person for that long, before early access they had a team but they seem to have cut that down since releasing it into early access. I've played this game a lot. There are 2 servers PVP and PVE. PVP server is pretty much dead and really no reason to play on it as it does not have anything that would support PVP play. As you all can see I've played 1000s of hours into this game and I'm now making a review because I think it's finally to the point that people should check it out. Few things to consider. -- Get past the graphics. Its 10+ years old but the graphics are still good enough. -- Don't expect to beat the game in a week. This game is mostly about building and training up your character to do harder things. -- Solo play is encouraged by the way the game is set up. However, it's really fun to play with some people that also want to play with you but sorta do their own thing. -- All the info here is my opinion and is coming from someone who has been around thru all the updates and patches. Why would someone want to play this game? You like exploring, building, and grinding skills in a sandbox game. Do you like to go out find items and resources bring them back to base and build your base? This game is great for that. Do not expect great AI or special moves in combat. This game is long in the skill grind and things take time. You build stuff over weeks not hours. Many people have asked me what I like about this game. I love the fact that I can play it work on my base and my skills/stats at my own pace. I don't have to rush to do anything. Game has seasons, trees grow, plants grow. Terra-forming a process and takes time. If you are looking for a building simulator move on, this will be too slow for you. Resources take time to get, recipes for building take skills and time to get. Small list of special things Xsyon has that is a little different that other games. -- Scavenging. You go into the junk pile throughout the world and look using your scavenging action to find items you use for crafting. Every area in the world has some different items in the possible loot you can get from that junk piles. Slow process to gather exact items but great for someone that likes to collect and hoard stuff. -- Cooking/Food. You can cook lots of different buffs and healing options that really effect your healing rates or energy/stats. I would like to see more meal types but really it doesn't matter much as the buffs choices are what really matter and there are 1000s of different options for that. -- Land claims. You place a totem and it protects your area from everyone doing anything on it with your leader settings. This is a good system and allows for control over the area. -- Food Decay. Your food type items decay. You can build things to slow the decay. Great system. Major Aspects of Xsyon -- Building. Free form building is one of the major aspects of Xsyon, its really the focus of the whole game. You can build wondrous cities and bases. Use your creativity to see what all you can do. I've seen so many awesome bases in Xsyon I can't even list all of the stuff you can do, but I've seen temples, pools, zoos, massive castles, taverns, you name it you likely can think of a way to build it. You have a LOT of room to control and build. -- Exploring. Xsyon is base on the real map of Lake Tahoe. You can explore the lands around it on foot or mount. It is a wonderful looking area and great to see every stream, lake, or hill. Plus the bases people build. -- Trade. Play trading is the way to go. There is no NPCs to buy or sell from. You either find it/craft it yourself or you trade for it. I highly encourage you to trade with other players. Makes the game a lot more fun and some things are just hard to find. (No Cash Shop or anything like that in Xsyon) -- Skills/Crafting. The crafting and skill system in Xsyon is top notch. Do not expect to level up all the skills in a day or a week, but you can level them all up. Stats and Resources matter in crafting. One of the best crafting systems in any game. If you want high skills you will need to craft a lot of items. Do not expect this to be fast. Major Flaws/Missing Aspects of Xsyon -- Combat. Combat in Xsyon is very basic. Even with ranged combat there is no special skills or actions you can do. You either hit it or miss it. You move out of the way of attacks. Use of pets makes most combat very easy, but even without pets it's not hard just fights take time. Archery in the game is a great new feature, but again no special skills. -- Mounts. Very limited on the mounts you have and what they can do. They are great for moving about, bad for anything else. -- Direction. Survival is sorta the theme of the game but you get past that in the first few minutes of play. Once you know how to get water and food. Survival is done. Creatures are not hard to out run or kill. So what is the overall point of playing past that? Other than creativity of building you really have nothing to shoot for. -- Map. Really needs an in game map. You only have a small radar type map other than that you using a 3rd party out of game map to see where things are. Final Thoughts If you like sandbox MMO's you for sure should check this out. If you are into fast paced games or combat. Pass on Xsyon. I've been on the look out for MMO or even server based games like this and I end up coming back to Xsyon over and over. Get over the graphics and give it a week. The game is fun. I would really love to see an updated graphical Xsyon 2 come out. It would be a major hit in a world where people are craving this type of play.
Really interesting idea, had it on my wishlist for a while, finally bought it... Seems fairly good, at first... fishing tools building exploring... but the grind ... approx .02 point per combine on crafting, if you are starting at 5, the interesting stuff is at 20-25, so expect to be doing at least 1000 combines. At that level, if you can find the mats, you can make the first most basic parts of things, still nothing useful... Ooh, I can make a floor, or a board, maybe a cart handle. Need to make 1000 cart handles (if you have the mats, and the skills to make the parts) to build whatever the next part is... after finally getting all the parts to make your first cart... whee 5 inventory slots. I am not a fan of crafting games that inflict this level of inventory pain. you only get like 20 inventory slots... guess how many slots you need for tools? all of them. guess what system isn't smart enough to let you build something and put the result in the vacated inventory slot, this system. :( I wanted to like this thing, but it isn't ready for public showing after 10 years.
Before I begin I must mention that most negative reviews seem motivated by the past subscription model. Xsyon no longer follows a paid subscription model. I started playing Xsyon over ten years ago. At that time there were few competitors in the genre. Several were in production but turned out to be scams. The developers of THOSE survival MMOs abandoned development and took fans money offering nothing in return. This was not the case with Xsyon. This review is intended to support the developers of Xsyon for having the tenacity to continue struggling through the development phase of their game. Xsyon still has potential even after so many years. However to be competitive in the market of this time much work remains to be done. I stopped playing all those years ago because development progress was slow and there were game-breaking problems with PvP. An enemy clan established a base near us and clear-felled forests across the map. This was being done across the entire server. There was no option to plant new trees. The devs were focused on other issues. Server population declined rapidly. This was my experience at the time. I stopped playing too. Perhaps they rushed pre-release and there were too many other issues which distracted them. Honestly communities in this genre are used to buggy games but ignoring game-breaking mechanics was what strangled this game in my opinion. Xsyon (at the time) was a great option in the genre when there was an active community. I had a lot of fun experiences. I would like to see an active community return. My opinion of what is required to make that happen is as follows. Firstly the graphics. I have a (very) high end gaming laptop. There are performance issues running the game on moderate settings. The graphics are also sub-par for the genre in this time period. The game actually looks and runs better with low graphics options enabled. This is off-putting for new players and quite unacceptable honestly. Agraphical overhaul including performance enhancements is an essential first step toward making Xsyon competitive in the genre. The graphics do not need to be amazing, just smoother and higher performance. If this is expensive, find a way to get it done. Seriously. There are options. As for the game itself, it is grindy. If you are not the type of player who enjoys grindy gameplay you would still be able to have good experiences if there was an active community to support your gameplay style. There is a long list of tasks to complete any goal in the game. Xsyon is not meant to be played alone. The advantage to this is that there is a lot to do. There are a lot of roles for different players to specialise in. It could be a great game for groups of friends to experience. The game progression meta is easy to follow if you are familiar with the genre. Points to take away: The game has potential. The two things it needs most are a basic graphics update and an active community. The devs have proven that they are willing to continue with development despite their struggles. I think they have focused on the wrong areas of development over the history of the game. However I am going to recommend this game to fans of the genre. My ten year old character is still available for me to play after all these years. If you enjoy this genre it's worth a look and if you can tolerate the graphics issues there are many hours of fun to be had even as a solo player. Get the game on special because I do not believe it to be worth the full price in its current state. And to the devs; Maybe consider crowdfunding for the resources to do a moderate graphical overhaul. Many gamers in this genre would chip in for a small reward like unique skins and titles. I think you have proven that you can be trusted to live up to your promises should you make any. I look forward to a day when I can once again log into a friendly, active clan base on a Xsyon PvP server. I think it's possible to regain what you lost all those years ago. You have my support.
it's Star wars Galaxies but under a different ip. same game mechanics reworked on a new ip. Xsyon = Sony-x in my opinion. SW galaxies was a game produced by Sony many years ago in which they canned many years ago. ( I'm showing my age here aren't I ) Saying all this the game is a in a bad way . i won't be coming back unless I see some polish and upgrades. It was Fun for a time.
I saw a enemy in the starting area and decided to try to kill it before I even got close to it it was swinging its melee weapon 10 feet from me and I was taking damage from it I tried to run from it but no matter how far I ran it was still hitting me i died because it wouldn't receive damage and no matter how far I ran it still hit me somehow due to that and them forcing me to make a account on their stupid website that I didn't want to do but was forced to and several other reasons I'm deleting this game forever I wish I can get my money back
This game has one of the friendliest communities of any games I've played. Already made friends, people are always willing to help you out, show you the basics, and are super patient. This game brings a feeling of nostalgia, even though I'd never played it up until a couple days ago. Games like this sadly aren't being made anymore.. So far, I'm loving it!
Game is great. Returned to playing after almost 2 years . It's a bit confusing in start but you learn gameplay in a few days. There are lots of tricks to learn. I played a lot and just found how to bring water from rivers to my place with system of canals. New features are implemented every while. Developer is in constant contact with players through xyon forums and steam discusions and also open for sugestions. Most fun open world game with excellent crafting and building system I played for now.
If you like farming/crafting it's pretty fun. It isn't too difficult to start building but there needs to be a better selection of weapons in the pvp mode. I could see it being better if this happened and if the servers weren't dead.
good game where you can build stuff
