For me, it's a difficult one to rate. I'd give it a neutral rating if I could. WH40k fans might be interested, not sure about anyone else. For starters, the introduction to this universe is ... lacking. If you know nothing about, you will not care or understand much here. What is the Inquisition, really? How much power do they actually wield? What is Chaos? What even is the Warp? What is a Gellar field? And why can't any 2 characters pronounce the same word in the same way?! Which brings me to voice acting... it's hit or miss, but it almost doesn't matter much, because the writing is atrocious. Do not play this for the "story". It's like an AI wrote this, only back then there were no AI programs sophisticated enough to have written this. Characters sound mostly wooden, like they're talking to themselves rather than another character. Some characters talk to you, even though they're not even conscious (in random missions), others tell you something they've already told you. Or the game is now set up in a way that you can learn information your character wasn't supposed to know at that point in the story. The graphics are butt ugly, if you ask me. It looks somehow so low-res, like everything is a bit blurry and jagged. Animations, movement, combat is mostly fine if you don't look too closely, but melee lacks impact, at least from what I've played so far. Speaking of melee ... Ranged seems to be the superior option in any case. What I find most annoying is that the game introduces gameplay mechanics you can't possibly make use of yet (or you can't if you founded a clan for 100 of that currency, only to realize it's pointless ... why does that cost the same currency? Why does it cost anything to begin with?). Not that it really matters, because on the normal difficulty you will cut through most stuff easily. Weapons and armor wise as well as concerning skills the game feels rather uninspired. First of all, your choice of class seems to not matter a lot. Each has its own resource and gimmicks, especially the 2 "spawner" classes, I suppos (but at least the hierophant only unlocks those options very late into the game), but whether you're playing the Crusader or the Sororitas or the Assassin doesn't really make a big difference it seems. Some have some exclusive weapons, sure, but overall it's a very similar gameplay style, since there aren't really that many unique talents. And the talent trees you do get, mostly consist of 1% increases to damage, movement speed, health, whatever. Not very interesting. Skills are exclusively tied to weapons, and every weapon will have the same skills it seems. So, any las weapon gives you access to the same 4 skills, while those of 1 handed weapons can't even be used in full, unless you dual wield them (in essence, 1h weapons only have 2 skills, depending on the slot they're wielded in, I guess, IF you have 2 of them equipped, but a shield is always right, etc., so it limits your options again). This makes finding new weapons very boring in the end. Once you know what you want, that's your primary weapon, and that won't change until the end of the game. Maybe the legendary or higher tier weapons will have some actually interesting affixes on them, but I kinda doubt it. Same for the armor. Each class has 3 or so distinct armors ... you will pick the one that most fits your playstyle. If you're like me, preferring ranged combat, picking the assault armor is relatively pointless, unless you want to use the jump to get AWAY, instead of TOWARDS enemies ... kinda defeats the purpose of an assault armor, though. All in all, I just don't think Martyr has what it takes to grip you for a long time. There are enough story missions now for probably 20 to 30 hours, more with the actual "standalon addon", I guess. And there are countless of random missions to do ... but why? That's the question. The "saving grace" of this game is imho the bolter ... especially the Heavy Bolter. This just turns the game from having to use peashooters to actually god-tier damage. Yes, flamers and grenade launchers are fun, but the staccato fire of a bolter is 10x better and even more effective. I got this on a deep deep sale for 10 bucks for everything ... that's "fine". I will not be playing with the other classes, though, because I don't find the game interesting enough. Sadly. Addendum: Thanks to them splitting up the game into this and "Prophecy" as a standalone edition, but still being playable via the "main game", I can't review the DLC properly on its own, so here it is: Don't bother. It's more of the nonsensical story, even worse voice acting and just plain mispronunciations, even of regular words. Itemization is still boring as hell, and the game stops evolving after reaching Level 30 or so. The passive skill points are barely noticeable and for the past 20 hours or so, I've basically just kept my Heavy Bolter, occasionally finding an upgrade, mercifully, but every other weapon just seems so drastically inferior to it. The rest of the itemization doesn't fare much better. This game shouldn't have been an "RPG", it should have been a twin stick shooter, with each weapon actually being meaningful and DIFFERENT, serving its own purpose. Also, since we're an Inquisitor, we should be able to procude Xenos weapons and artifacts, you even have the option to play as a "radical" or a "puritan". They could have used that system to unlock at least some different armor and weapon choices. We're basically fighting most of the WH40k races here, why can't we make use of Eldar weapons, for example? And why am I locked to wearing ONE suit of Power Armor? No actual legendary weapons or items, either, just ... the same boring items with more and better stats. A grey weapon offers exactly the same gameplay as a red weapon. And then they even had the audacity to include Fabius Bile in this and turn him into an absolute laughing stock, the voice acting alone ... my god. What were they thinking?
I honestly wanted to play this game and I'll probably keep trying but the design and camera angles are so bad it's giving me a headache just to try to move. It's like the dev said people who play Warhammer are narcissists and just want to look at their character so leave the enemy out of shot constantly. P.S: Yes I changed offset and tried what tricks I could find online but it didn't work. Then there's optimization where this game didn't work for me on my pc for a while and then it jittered heavily. I'm not recommending this for design and for technical issues.
I gritted my teeth and struggled with this game, trying to find some fun. - The graphics are terrible, you can only tell there are enemies nearby by the red dot on the minimap. Everything on the screen blurs into a monotonous mess. - There's no calculator to show what components your damage is made up of. There's no description of what enchants do, you have to guess from their names and try them out in the field. - It's impossible to understand why you started killing yourself after switching from a blue sword to a purple one. - Today I logged into the game and my void storage is empty. - Support in this game is useless. Bye.
Diablo-light ARPG Warhammer game. A bit janky, but feels fun to play.
It's an enjoyable Diablo clone wrapped in a Warhammer 40k skin. Get it on sale. Last sale the game and the majority of its DLC was just under ten bucks. Check sales trackers for Historic Low matches.
In the life of every old gamer there comes a time that a game enters his/her life to stay. This is such game for me. Whatever happens, whatever new game I play I always come back to this one. Never gets old. If they'll discontinue the support for this game one day, a piece of my soul shall die.
Extremely average game skewing towards bad. Gameplay is extremely mid, story and lore are very bland (Of this particular game, not 40K as a whole) and inconsistent with the main lore. Map design is horrible and the game feels very laggy, unoptimized and clunky. Movements and controls feel extremely "heavy", basic QoL features and settings are lacking (Map closes everytime you open another menu, there's no setting to change that). Voice acting is unbearable and the music is very very bad. You get infodumped with mechanics, items and whatnot at the start of the game and feel overwhelmed. Highest tier of items are given out as if they're nothing. Missions, maps and challenges are very repetitive and boring. You never feel like you are part of the world or have any real impact on anything. The only good thing I can say about the game is it's fantastic 40k setting, which is not a merit of the actual game. Overall, not worth your time when there are so many other fantastic ARPGs out there. The original Titan Quest, which came out 20 years ago, is a much more polished and enjoyable experience.
