About
War of the Austrian Succession
Fight across the battlefields of eighteenth-century Europe in War of the Austrian Succession, a detailed tactical wargame covering the major campaigns, battles, and theaters of the vast dynastic conflict that reshaped the balance of power in Europe.
From Mollwitz and Chotusitz to Dettingen, Fontenoy, Rocoux, Lauffeld, and Culloden, War of the Austrian Succession places you in command of the armies that fought for crowns, territory, dynastic survival, and continental dominance. What began as a succession crisis following the death of Holy Roman Emperor Karl VI quickly expanded into a sprawling European war involving Austria, Prussia, France, Britain, Bavaria, Spain, Sardinia, the Dutch Republic, Jacobite rebels, and countless allied states and auxiliary formations.
Take command in War of the Austrian Succession, where detailed tactical maps and historically grounded orders of battle place you in control of armies fighting across snow-covered plains, fortified cities, mountain passes, rivers, villages, and sprawling continental battlefields. Every battle is shaped by the realities of eighteenth-century warfare: rigid linear tactics, cavalry shock action, artillery deployment, militia reliability, command limitations, fatigue, terrain, morale, and the growing importance of light troops and maneuver warfare.
Recreate the major campaigns of the War of the Austrian Succession from multiple perspectives across Europe.
Lead the armies of Austria and the Pragmatic Allies, including:
Austrian line infantry
Grenadiers
Croats and light troops
Hussars
Cuirassiers and dragoons
British infantry
Dutch and Hanoverian contingents
Sardinian forces
Or take command of the Bourbon and anti-Habsburg coalitions, including:
Prussian infantry and cavalry
French line and guard regiments
Maison du Roi cavalry
Irish Brigade troops
Bavarian forces
Spanish and Neapolitan armies
Jacobite Highland clans
The historically accurate Order of Battle reflects the diverse armies and military systems of the era. Prussian infantry delivers unmatched discipline and firepower, Austrian cavalry and light troops excel in maneuver warfare, French armies field enormous and colorful forces supported by elite guards and cavalry, while Jacobite armies rely on speed, aggression, and the shock of the Highland Charge.
War of the Austrian Succession covers the major fronts and campaigns fought across Europe during the conflict.
Fight in Central Europe during the Silesian Wars, where Friedrich II of Prussia challenged Habsburg dominance and transformed the reputation of the Prussian army through victories at Mollwitz, Hohenfriedberg, and Kesselsdorf.
Battle across Flanders and the Low Countries, where massive French and Allied armies clashed in some of the largest field battles of the century at Dettingen, Fontenoy, Rocoux, and Lauffeld.
Campaign through Italy, where Austrian, Spanish, French, Sardinian, and Neapolitan armies fought brutal battles across rivers, fortresses, and mountain terrain.
Join the Jacobite Rising of 1745, where Charles Edward Stuart and his Highland army advanced deep into Britain before meeting final defeat at Culloden.
The War of the Austrian Succession was fought during a period of military transition where discipline, drill, firepower, cavalry maneuver, and battlefield command determined victory.
Fight across battlefields where:
Linear formations and volley fire dominate combat
Heavy cavalry charges can decide battles
Light troops and hussars excel at reconnaissance and harassment
Grenadiers and guards provide elite assault forces
Weather, visibility, and terrain shape tactical decisions
Artillery positioning becomes critical to battlefield success
Militia troops may overwhelm opponents
The game models the differences between disciplined Prussian infantry, Austrian light forces, French cavalry-heavy armies, British and Allied contingents, Spanish and Italian formations, Bavarian troops, and the unique tactics of the Jacobite Highland clans.

This release is another one of WDS' Musket and Pike series titles. It also, to the best of my knowledge, represents the first entirely solo design by Andrew Bamford. Andrew has had several of his books published by (without looking it up) Helion. What really sold me on this game is that Andrew also took advantage of the period to add in material on the Jacobite Rebellion (something that I had been collecting a few titles on in the past few years - Duffy, and Royle to name a couple, although I think I got a couple more as well). I don't really know the period as well as I do the Crusades, Hundred Years War, American Revolution, or even Thurty Years War (different reasons for some of these, although Thirty Years War and some older titles in the series are where I paid my dues learning the ins and outs of the series - and there are *a lot* of those; as for a PC game engine, the Musket and Pike (and associated Sword and Siege engine) are pretty robust and flexible -although the electrice medium has always had some pros and cons compared to its paper/cardboard sibling - easier to design in what ends up being unenforceable (apart from the honour system) house rules in the paper/cardboard wargame medium than in the electric one - so in the end, I found design (in general) to be basically, about looking for work-arounds. And I don't know what Andrew ended up doing with his project. One thing I love about WDS titles (and Tiller's beforehand) is the ability to customise; I happen to be a graphics guy even moreso than a coding guy, so I look forward to working with these titles- and War of Austrian Succession is no different. I do it, mainly as another expression of the hobby - these for me (like even some boardgames) also end up being a version of a 'craft project' - to be very clear, these are fine the way they are published - I am only meaning that you also have room to do 'other stuff' if you're son inclined. I ought to mention to a relatively minor change that I found pretty cool - having a bar on the unit portraits indicating Side A or B (sometimes called by a variable name - like they are in this title), that's a really useful small change - and is really indicative of the things that WDS' programming and projects come up with. Yes sure there are a LOT more than that, to be fair - but that one I noticed recently -and I doubt anyone might mention. :) Another solid title that, admittedly, I did not wait for to get off of Steam, but got directly from WDS in the weeks prior to its release here. But make no mistake, at their hearts, these titles have board wargames in their DNA - and given the medium -they can be bigger in scale and scope than the most massive board wargames - it's not even close. But that is really just about how they can use the scales and the medium. There are going to a variety of scenario styles involved with this - smaller, to larger, and I think I read 2 basic game scales (that is the beauty of the series' - it can support different game scales if a designer is so inclined to go there. Nice work, guys!!
The manual and documentation is extremely thorough and clearly a huge project. Very excited to get in to this game as a wargame enjoyer.
As with other WDS series one advantage is relative similarity across a given set of games, but equally with very real differences. If their Seven Years War has a feeling of being 'almost (but not quite) Napoleonic, this one captures the phase where the old 'pike' bit dropped away and firepower became the core. One real advantage to this title is the coverage of the 1745-6 Jacobite revolt. All the historic battles and an intriguing what if campaign that explores what would have happened if the Jacobites had stuck to the plan to race to London. Generates interesting battles in somewhat unexpected places.
Exactly what I want in a proper wargame: cuff-and-cover lining colors that correspond to individual regiments, units capable of building breastworks, 3D units that resemble their unit cards, clean graphics, and orderly chaos on the field. Scipio would approve.
A very good, serious strategy game. True to the standards set by WDS—and previously by John Tiller—it is meticulously researched regarding history, geography, participating forces, unit types, organization, and nomenclature, extending down to units smaller than brigades (e.g., companies). It offers a wide range of scenarios and individual campaigns, including "what-if" scenarios. Highly recommended for hardcore strategy gamers!
