About
Crusades: Book II
Continue the struggle for the eastern Mediterranean in Crusades: Book II, a tactical medieval wargame covering the wars that followed the failure of the Second Crusade and the long contest that led to the Third and Fourth Crusades.
Beginning in 1149, the game follows a period of shifting alliances, fragile Crusader forces, and increasingly ambitious campaigns that reshaped the balance of the region. From the defeat at Inab and the rise of Nur al-Din, to Saladin’s victory at Hattin, the struggle for Jerusalem, the great operations of the Third Crusade, and the shocking diversion to Constantinople in 1204, this is an era defined by endurance, reconquest, siege warfare, and grand expeditions strained by distance and logistics.
Take command in Crusades: Book II, where 40-meter hexes and 10-minute turns place you in control of armies fighting across the Levant, Anatolia, and beyond. Storm fortresses, hold vital routes, defend ports, and fight major battles.
Recreate the campaigns of the later Crusading era from either side of the conflict.
Lead the Crusader Alliance, built around:
Armored knights and lance cavalry
Infantry armed with sword, spear, and axe
Crossbowmen and bowmen
Sappers and siege crews
Ballistas and other engines used to force fortified positions
Or command the Anti-Crusader Alliance, fighting with:
Fast cavalry able to strike, harass, and disengage
Horse and foot archers armed with powerful recurve bows
Spearmen and swordsmen
Onagers and other siege weapons used to break strongpoints and resist invasion
The historically accurate Order of Battle captures the changing military character of the 12th century: Crusader armies built around shock action, fortified defense, and siege assaults, facing opponents whose growing strength lay in mobility, missile fire, regional coordination, and the ability to concentrate force at decisive points. The result is a broader and more developed battlefield than Book I, shaped by reconquest, counterattack, and increasingly large-scale coalition warfare.
Crusades: Book II expands the conflict beyond the foundations of the Crusader states and into a broader struggle for dominance. The frontier is no longer a story of sudden conquest alone, but of repeated campaigns to seize, defend, isolate, and relieve the strongpoints that control entire regions.
Fight across battlefields where:
Castles, ports, and walled cities anchor strategy
Roads, crossings, and supply lines are vital
Field armies must cooperate with garrisons, fleets, and relief forces
Crusades: Book II captures the military character of the period through major sieges, open battles, raids, marches, relief attempts, and desperate defenses. Siege warfare plays a central role, with medieval engines and assault methods helping decide the fate of key strongholds and cities.
From Inab, Harim, Montgisard, Jacob’s Ford, Hattin, Acre, Arsuf, and Jerusalem to the storming of Constantinople, Crusades: Book II recreates an age in which the fight for the Holy Land became part of a far larger contest stretching across the eastern Mediterranean.
Crusades: Book II includes 102 scenarios covering a wide variety of engagements and battlefield situations, including:
A solo tutorial scenario
Five training scenarios
Historical battles
Variant scenarios
What-if scenarios
Specialized versions for both head-to-head play and play against the AI

These campaigns are branching in structure, allowing players to make strategic choices that affect which scenarios follow and how the wider campaign develops. Play from the perspective of either the Crusader Alliance or the Anti-Crusader Alliance as the conflict unfolds across multiple theaters.
A wide range of maps covers the major locations fought over during the later Crusading era, from the Levantine coast and inland fortresses to Anatolian battlefields and the walls of Constantinople.
All of Crusades: Book II's maps are built from careful study of real terrain and historical locations, helping create battlefields that reflect the operational realities of the age. Crusades: Book II also includes extensive 3D unit graphics representing the major armies involved, bringing the later Crusades to life in rich medieval detail.

I've owned this game since its release on WDS. Its the best wargame on the market bar none. I suggest reading the manual and blog posts on their website, to understand the mechanics, because there are many. 10/10
Incredible game. Our Lord would want you to buy it
My review of Crusades Book I (CBI) covers the same ground as Crusades Book II. If you have any interest in this time period, this game is a fascinating look at the Third and Fourth Crusades. To provide a point of reference, the game covers the same era depicted in the 2005 movie Kingdom of Heaven. I firmly believe WDS games are a wonderful way to learn about and experience the history they cover. I overwhelming recommend Crusades Book II for historical and gameplay value. What follows is a copy of my review for CBI. Title: A Window into History: Wargame Design Studio & Crusades Book I Review: The lineage of Wargame Design Studio passes through the highest pedigree of wargaming. You can trace it back to Talonsoft, HPS, and John Tiller's golden age. When you look at the people involved, you see a direct connection to the era when Avalon Hill and SPI ruled. The company itself is part of the history of our hobby. With the release of the finest wargaming on PC, we welcome a new chapter with its arrival on Steam. Whether you view these games as simulations or games (or both?), I have found that after hundreds of games in multiplayer, ladder play, and solo campaigns, they offer another window into the history they cover. Have you ever read a book on a battle and been confused about who was where? What does a Soviet division look like? What tanks did the French have? Who were the Crusaders, how many answered the call, and what was their army like? WDS games give you the maps, the leaders, and the order of battle, placing them before the drawing of swords. Sometimes this is strictly historical, or perhaps even more intriguingly, in "what-if" scenarios. Play a scenario in Crusades Book I, then go back and read your book again about the battle. The combatants and the combat come into a new and clearer light. Think you can do better? This is your chance to prove it. Antioch, Nicaea, and Jerusalem are yours for the taking, or for the keeping. You are not only buying a game; you can join the WDS forums or try out multiplayer matches. Do you love to read or discuss history? Just look at the blogs and the news. You will find a community of people who love the hobby and the history as much as you do. Meticulous research, a dedication to history, and continued support long after a game is released. How many companies support their games decades after release? In this review, I am appealing more to the simulation side. Sometimes, if we want to understand what is happening today, we have to look into the past. Crusades Book I takes you back to the beginning of today's history to see where it all started. I overwhelming recommend Crusades Book I for historical and gameplay value. Editorial Note: I own many of the WDS titles from their website. My steam key came from a purchase of CBI on the WDS store. I estimate my current time in this game at 40 hours. End Of Reference
If you like medieval warfare. If you like board games. If you like playing miniatures. If you want to lay siege to a city or castle. If you liked watching the movie "Kingdom of Heaven." If you like recreating history. Then this is the game for you.
Loving an additional option to purchase WDS games. And will be getting some others as they appear.
Riffing off a familiar system (WDS' Musket and Pike) the Crusades (Book I and II) open up a new world of fighting. I love tackling the siege operations, fighting for the walls, etc.
Sword & Siege: Crusades is a solid and engaging historical wargame with a strong medieval atmosphere. It feels very similar to a traditional tabletop board wargame, with careful movement, tactical planning, sieges, and difficult battlefield decisions. The game rewards patience and strategy rather than quick reactions, which makes every victory feel earned. Fans of classic hex-and-counter wargames and military board games will almost certainly enjoy it. A great choice for players who like medieval warfare, thoughtful tactics, and the feeling of commanding armies on a historical battlefield. So, to arms, good knight — glory awaits!
It's great to see WDS on Steam! This is a fantastic game. I own a bunch of WDS games and, honestly, the only reason I don't have more of them is that you get SO MUCH game with each title! Once you become familiar with the general funcion and interface of one game, you'll be right at home with all games from WDS. That being said, make no mistake: each series has its own scale and its own historical complexities, and everything is treated with the accuracy and the respect that it deserves. Even though these are uncompromising wargames for a specific audience, they manage to be eminently playable and quite intuitive (all units behave the way you would expect). The one thing I absolutely love about WDS games (and the one thing I never see mentioned) is the incredible potential these titles have for emergent storytelling. The game mechanics and the under-the-hood complexities of these titles conspire to create susprisingly "human" ebb-and-flow scenes on the battlefield. You'll get everything: heroic charges, last ditch defenses, chaotic sieges, you'll see your units fight, get exhausted, rout, come back... It's really something! On a last note, if you like the Crusades titles, I strongly encourage you to go check out the Renaissance game on the WDS website. It's one of my favorites and can't come to Steam fast enough. Happy gaming!
If you played book 1 and liked it, then you know what you're getting into. The only big difference for this entry is you get third and fourth crusade kino
