About
Age of Longbow: Volume I
March into one of medieval Europe's longest and most decisive conflicts in Age of Longbow Volume I, a detailed tactical wargame covering the campaigns and battles of the Hundred Years War between England, France, and their allies.
Beginning with the dynastic crisis following the death of Charles IV in 1328, Age of Longbow Volume I follows the rise of English and French rivalry into full-scale war. From the campaigns of Edward III and the Black Prince to the shifting alliances of Castile, Brittany, and beyond, the game captures the rise, collapse, and resurgence of power across more than a century of conflict. Relive famous victories such as Crécy, Poitiers and Agincourt, the shifting fortunes of the Caroline phase, Joan of Arc and the siege of Orleans and the decisive final struggles that shaped the fate of France and England.
Take command in Age of Longbow Volume I, where detailed hex-based maps place you in control of medieval armies fighting across fields, fortresses, and contested frontiers. Every battle reflects the realities of the era: various infantry formations, devastating longbow volleys, cavalry charges and the constant challenge of supply and command.
Recreate the major campaigns of the war from either side of the conflict.
Lead the forces of England and its allies, including:
English and Welsh Longbowmen
Men-at-arms

Or take command of France and its supporting powers, including:
Feudal levies

The historically accurate Order of Battle reflects the forces that fought across the war, allowing you to experience the strengths and weaknesses of each side -- from disciplined English longbow formations to the evolving tactics of French and allied forces.
The Hundred Years War was not defined by a single style of warfare.
Age of Longbow Volume I captures the evolving nature of medieval combat across more than a century of conflict, where:

Fight across varied terrain where:
Strongholds and cities anchor strategic positions

Fatigue, morale, and leadership influence every engagement
From major set-piece battles to smaller clashes, raids, and defensive actions, the game recreates the full spectrum of medieval warfare.

Reviews
I was thinking about the best way to review titles, given the experience I have a pretty wide variety of games previously published by John Tiller Software, and also in consideration that I have had some design experience within the Musket and Pike Engine. I believe that Steam allows for multiple reviews, and I guess in my case those might be considered as a distinct portions of a broader review. My previous reviews for Crusades I and II were basically an enthusiastic endorsement of the company's decision to branch out to offering titles on Steam. I admit that in those there was no detail whatsoever about the specific games' topics, or gameplay. I) Still a BIG thumbs up for offering Steam as an additional option. That isn't going to change. However it might be useful to point out what I see as some advantages to this platform. II) The Engine - ok -I am not going to review this just yet, as that will require more time than I currently have, but it is fair to review the engine as a entity distinct from what a given project's designer has done with the engine. At the time of writing this, we now have 2 different designers across the titles currently available in Steam, so there will be differences in approach. Previously, the former publisher, John Tiller Software -projects were all about how a project's scenario designer was able to interpret and use the engine; there would be differences in approach. Sword and Siege is an adaptation of the Musket & Pike engine, as far as I am aware (with some differences- notably sieges). The Engine had always been the overarching perview of programming (and under JTS, that was basically John Tiller for the most part, although not exclusively), and to be entirely fair to my knowledge, WDS has had to deal with having lost programmers; one of which I considered a reaonably close friend of mine (Paul Bruffell). It seems that some might not entirely see the distinction in engine, and adaptation of engine by scenario designers there, and these appear to be significant; Richard White, the scenario designer for Longbow I, has been involved with the Musket and Pike engine since its initially published title: The Renaissance, so he came to this project with a lot of prior experience with a very similar engine. [this paragraph edited 24 May 2026] III) This might be more straight-forward, although probably take more to write - essentially this would be what the designer opted to do with the engine. Plus with maybe some historical references thrown in for good measure. -Noting that one thing that JTS before, and WDS have done and are doing is they support their products and continue to do so. There are some that have had major modifications to, basically, become an entirely different product. And any review written, effectively, is a time stamp of what the product was at a set point in time. A couple of weeks ago, I had occasion to run through the Notes.pdf files for both Crusades I/II and Longbows I, and could tell there was a different approach between the two designers. Ok, more later- I need to get time in, in working with the product before I go to III. I probably can write up section II on the engine, but that won't come for awhile.
The best Medieval wargame on the market. I've played it for a while now, from the WDS page, so I'm pretty familiar with it. The units are accurate representations of historical units and leaders, carefully crafted alongside the terrain. If you're new to the series, I suggest the manual, because there's a lot going on under the u hood. Where else can you lead an army as the Black Prince with historically accurate manpower numbers, Total War? Nope.
I had this game from release at the WDS store, so don't let the little play time on Steam fool you. It is a great wargame and a piece of historical art. Granted, the graphics and UI can seem a bit outdated but they work smoothly and give you full control over your forces. The game itself is a marvel, a playable history book with the accurate order-of-battles being unique. For everybody who wants to re-live history in authentic game this is the way to go!
For the madlads out there, it's playable on SteamDeck / Linux, but need some tweaking, solution can be found here: https://codeberg.org/blabber/wds-wine.
Same game system as the two Crusade games, but this shows the versatility of the underlying game system. very different game play as a result of the shift to Western Europe, less asymetric but still very important differences between the various armies. Loads of scenarios, ranging from set piece battles to quirky small scale encounters and lots of plausible variants
I've been following Wargame Design Studios for many years now, and before that, the late John Tiller. I've always found their products to be superb historical reconstructions and a real pleasure to play. This game about the Hundred Years' War is also a little gem. I've only been playing it for a few hours, but it promises great things.
If you like wargames there's no reason not to enjoy WDS titles. All of them. Now. Do it. Get down!
If you like historical hex based board games, then you will like this. Not too complicated and the topic appears well researched. This game allows fans of military history to get a better grasp on the geography of the battlefields and the types of weaponry and units from that era. Hopefully more (and some of the older) games from Wargame Design Studio will be hitting Steam!
