Virvius contains everything I love about 90's first person shooters: big guns, lots of demons to slaughter and well crafted levels to explore. If you're a fan of Quake, you're not going to want to miss playing Virvius. Each episode consists of 10 levels, and only 1 episode is currently playable at the time of writing (with more episodes to come in the future). You'll face a mini boss at level 5 and a main boss at level 10. Every level has been well crafted to provide a decent challenge regardless of difficulty setting, and every fight is strategic in some way, mostly by monitoring your movement and keeping track of the enemies and environment around you. Plus the graphics are awesome and really support the 90's inspirations. There is something here for every shooter fan. I highly recommend everyone check out this game and show a solo developer the support they deserve. They've been working on this for 3 years and I can't wait to play more.
Has some fun secrets to find and plays really well on my Steam Deck!
Disclaimer: I am a friend of the developer. I was not gifted Virvius or asked to purchase or review it. We are both game developers who connected by our love of games where you kick ass and dominate. This is what Virvius is about. I have not seen the final parts or polish of the game until this release, so I am excited to complete it. I was surprised by the low price point. I was expecting it to sell for 3x more. I think it makes for an easy pick up for any 90's FPS fan. Virvius is a great tribute to FPS games of the past. I feel vibes from many of my favorite 90's first person shooters. Cool enemies and weapons with a focus on kicking ass. I wish you could see the developer play. Steam is asking me to recommend or not, and I recommend. Try it out and have some fun with it. Would love to see other people's gameplay footage. I am hoping I can edit this review as I play the game more, but I will see if that is possible.
Had a blast playing this game! Great level design, fun and creative enemies, and smooth controls. I recommend for anyone looking for a solid Boomer Shooter!
I feel like this is the Quake-like I've been searching for! VERY good and still in development, despite a short lapse in updates. If you love the OG Quake as much as I do, you'd be a fool not to snatch this sucker up. Especially on sale as it is right now! You better believe I recommend this!
PSA - I have met the developer of this game but have not received it for free or have been told to review it, just here to give my two cents. This game is awesome. Clearly a lot of work and passion went into this and if you even remotely like shooters, I would give it a try. The price point is extremely respectable and is definitely a bang for your buck. The gun, enemy, level designs all around are fantastic, and being a big fan of anything dark fantasy, the enemies look cool as hell. Any game dev out there would know how much work goes into something like this and anyone debating on whether to try it, I would 100% recommend it.
Great ode to the boomer shooters I played when I was a kid! Pure nostalgia!
Virvius è un omaggio, un osanna, una preghiera, un inchino a QUAKE. Per boomershooter e per i figli di...Quake....come me Virvius is a tribute, an Hosanna, a prayer, a bow to QUAKE. For boomershooter and the children of... Quake....
This game is a total blast from the past, hitting you right in the nostalgia feels with its classic "boomer shooter" vibe. You can tell this game is it's a labor of love. There's so much attention to detail in recreating that 90's shooter atmosphere, from the hordes of enemies to the variety of weapons. Sure, it's a bit rough around the edges, but hey, it's still early access. With some feedback and tweaks, this game is bound to get even better.
Disclaimer - I know the developer and have been following this game from afar. But I have only play tested earlier version less than a handful of times, and certainly not played through entire sections of the game... until now. This game is chock full of Quake and Quake II homages, references, inspiration, and feel. It's quite incredible -- not to give anything away, but if you want to revive some of that nostalgia, you'll get it here: enemies, weapons, secrets, switches, text hints on-screen, buttons that interface with mechanical devices, even lasers and moving platforms, and keycards -- all Quake style. This also includes the level design. The level design is not what you'd expect from a solo indie developer selling a $5 game. I am saying from the perspective of a gamer who just played through some of these levels for the first time 30 seconds ago, and who was not anticipating this. I'm serious. There are multiple layers of verticality. Lots of secrets, water areas, switches, multiple paths, connectivity to the level. It is much more than I was expecting. This definitely a Quake style shooter that will have you searching and learning where you need to go. The difficulty is also there, variable of course. If you're a settings geek, you can get lost in the menus with myriad options. You may want to brighten the screen and change the weapon audio -- all available in the Game/UI/Video/Audio settings, to your liking. While it is not perfect, it is Early Access, and for $5 from a solo dev, it's well worth the price of a coffee to check it out, and get some Quake vibes. Do so. Now. Then give useful feedback, and be part of the game's iteration and improvement to your liking.
