Whenn Update?
Pro: - Great gameplay and works consistently. Great enough to warrant a recommendation. I have had no problem moving units around and issue them combat orders. The bugs reported by other reviewers seem to have been largely fixed. Cons: - Very bad story writing. The game doesn't give you necessary exposition to tell you what's going on, and as you progress, you are only receiving random snipets of information that doesn't really make sense, or provide to you far too late that it ruin the certain emotional scenes. I have seen hentai games with better story. [strike] -Devs apparently have been going radio silent for quite a while. [/strike] Edit: Devs just released update on the game development. It's fair to say the game is not abandoned.
I like the game. But i have a problem. i played the Demo and that i bought the game and now that i have the bought game i cant play futher than the Demo end on the Train. Is this intentional ?
This game is fantastic. I've played few games that are similar, but i caught onto the controls easily and the tactics flowed. and the story already has me invested into the characters and their personalities. I hope you add a sort of sandbox/wave mode where you can customize a squad, pick the map and difficulty. It would itch that niche that I have been searching for. Keep it up like this and i might be spending an unhealthy amount of time on here. :)
I really like the squad management system of the game and the new introduction of peeking, however I have experienced a few bugs and know it's in early access. I crashed when I put the M08 machine gun pack into the repair shop in a town and sometimes during battles the machine gun vanished off my character. Another issue was I couldn't place mines down during the boss battle against Fai, could be user incompetency but I couldn't figure out how to deploy it. Overall I look forward to its development.
Though it's clearly in need of work I think that the game has promise. It's mostly enjoyable, though I don't personally care for the plot overmuch, and the gameplay is solid. AI is clever enough to pose a real threat and overall I like it. It's part Valkyria Chronicles and part jagged alliance. Now that doesn't mean it's perfect. I wish that the paid version had more content than the demo, as currently it is just the demo for 10 dollars. I would suggest a few things though, allowing splitting of ammo stacks so ammo can be shared among multiple people from one stack. The cutscenes could use some serious work and the tone can be inconsistent, but overall the gameplay is good enough to carry it a ways in my opinion.
Very fun has great potential
i've played about all i need to of Unconventional Warfare so far to get into the main campaign - the story is cute and the aesthetic is a love letter to Valkyria Chronicles. the tactical action is building up to be a lot more layered and consistent between missions than the breezy summer day that is VC, so if you're a fan of more complex action this is one to watch out for.
While it's said to death about practically every early access indie title, this game does have great potential. It's not finished in the slightest, nor would I say the parts that are done are perfect, but the skeleton is there. In a less metaphorical sense: the worldbuilding, the mechanics, the characters (and their future development) are all there. One solid look and I can tell this is crafted by people who not only care, but are talented and dedicated. I want to see this title - and the devs - go far. Now, for some pros, cons, and a little in-between: + Gameplay. The tactics aspect of UW is very messy, but in a good way. While there are counters and powerful strategies to employ, there is not a destined "meta" that makes the game repetitive. Every mission has its flavor (Random encounters could use some refinement). The moment when you position your misfits just right feels fantastic. + Hotkeys. This is great for any RTS game, and QoL stuff like this goes far when it comes to enjoyment of a game. (Z & C for prone & crouch, X for ammo type... it's in the controls if you need them). + Miscellaneous depth. This includes anything from varying weapon qualities, variety of equipment, to rouge-like events and survival aspects. Everything here delivers that feel of being stranded behind enemy lines, it's great. - Quite unpolished overall (understandable, given its early access state). While all the mechanics are there, few have been refined, and some suffer from lack of explanation. For example, the cover and flanking systems are difficult to understand (for me anyways), and I find myself thinking it might be better to do away with the stat-based hit system and put in place something like Men of War's combat systems. - While I like the music tracks, taking a book from Valkyria Chronicles' seamless looping tracks would drastically improve the quality of the music. +? Setting, characters, and story are all set up great. If developed further, it can be quite in-depth and entertaining. -? The demo content is the same as the game content. While I knew this when purchasing, understand that (at time of writing) you are paying for the future development of the game. Think of it like a war bond: pay them now and get plenty in return later down the line. It seems that their Kickstarter and Patreon pages are no longer operational, so the main way you can support them is via Steam. Currently, UW is a great foundation that should be supported in any way you can. I'd recommend grabbing it now rather than later, and seeing where the project goes.
