Ultionus is a love-letter to the home computer arcade games of the late 80s and early 90s, with colorful 2D visuals, catchy chiptune music by the legendary Jake 'Virt' Kaufman, and 7 stages of hard-as-nails gameplay.

Extremely short. What you see in the screenshots are all the levels in the game. I got a bad ending. Why? Who knows!
Looking at the reviews I found myself wondering "was I playing something that these folks weren't?" There were complaints about difficulty, controls feeling overly dated, and I just got none of that? Turns out, probably! A recent update seems to have improved quite a lot of the game - I have not played the prior version, but this version? Pretty good, I think. It's a charming if somewhat immature game, with great 2d pixel art graphics, excellent music and overall gameplay that's "good enough.". It still feels a very old school platformer, but as someone whose first gaming experience was the ZX Spectrum, and grew up with the Sega Megadrive, it feels the right amount of old school for better or worse. There is some 'old school style jank' intentionally recreated - the protagonist stops to shoot when on the ground but not in the air, some jumps have some particularly weird timing, Boss patterns are usually fairly easy to parse but every other boss has a single solitary attack that will be the bane of a no-damage run... And the 'secrets and collectables' aren't exactly obscure but damn if that one rescue item in the Lava Stage isn't thoroughly annoying. All that said, the game's good. I enjoyed it. If I had a real 'complaint' or thing people need to be aware of, it's tied to the difficulty and game length. This game is short. VERY short. But that's OK. Games this short are made to be replayed, and I can safely say I have done so a few times now. (.. so if you look at my hours on record, you have an idea of how short it is). A lot of the gametime will come down to achievement hunting and trying harder difficulties. Back in the day you'd pay AAA prices for a game this short but now, £5 is certainly a lot more of an appropriate price. Because, yes, it is very short. I found it on the verge of being a too easy on the default difficulty. But I've also been playing these types of games for decades, so take that with a pinch of salt. If this really was back in the day, you'd expect a much more punishing game, but this smooths over a lot of what would've been backbreaking, so Ultionus is pretty generous as these types of games go. Lives handed out like candy, minimal instant death hazards, continues aren't even a thing (run out of lives? You just get kicked back to the start of what is always a fairly short level). There's still some difficulty there, not always in a fair manner - most of the trouble comes from trying to get the good ending after all - but it shouldn't take more than one or two attempts to clear any given level. Except penultimate stage's lift segment. That part kind of sucks. I've rambled long enough, if any part of this sounds like it'd click for you, it probably will.
Lindo juego retro con pixel art, aunque es muy corto, te lo pasas entre 45 min y 1h. Recomiendo comprarlo en oferta. Nota: 8/10, una heroina de los 80s, me hace recordar a Barbarella.
Played it years ago before the BIG UPDATE. It was trash, now it is a good game as long as you pick up the upgrades in the shops.
TLDR I recommend. I first played this years ago, before the developer's last update. I never played the game it was based upon, but I thought the pixel art looked great and liked the tongue-in-cheek take on the original concept. The issue I had then was that it played (mechanically) like an old game, perhaps sticking too closely to the original title. So I played it briefly and only up until you get to the planet, at which point I decided the platforming gameplay was too dated. However with the update it now plays far better, with the mechanics having a more modern feel. I can recommend this title now, and wanted to write up a review as there are too many older reviews before the update that paint a negative picture of the game. If I can say anything on the negative side, it would be that I think I prefer the original game over screen - pity you can't toggle an option in the menu to have it. Oh and those sea serpent things probably shouldn't 1 hit kill you...
I got this game on sale for like 3 bucks, and actually had a really good time with it. It's really short, but for that price i was more than satisfied. i beat it in a couple days, and despite people saying it was really hard, i didn't really think so. The game really appealed to my perverted sense of humor, and i found myself laughing and saying wtf out loud several times lol. Which to me is a good sign that i'm enjoying myself lol. It's not groundbreaking, but it's certainly good.
My favourite Space Bimbo game
It was amazing how fast the game went from being quite fun to reminding me why some of the games I remember fondly and replay every few years have people bounce of them. Too bad. Edit: So, I 100%'d the game. It's fun. Still absolutely hate that auto-scroller level. Make sure you get the autofire from the shop.
....... \_☠_ ▄▂_ .........[█|||███████]▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▃▂ ..__▂▅█ Mafia do Retrogame █▅▄▃▂ I████████████████████████████] ...◥⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲◤ MAFIA DO RETROGAME - YOUTUBE @mafiadoretrogame https://www.youtube.com/@mafiadoretrogame GAMEPLAY ATÉ ZERAR! https://youtu.be/5Bxs9FKd0Q0
Haven't played this in a few years but essentially I bought a great album and got a free game with it. The game itself is pretty decent but the soundtrack is a masterpiece. Edit: I just noticed it got an overhaul last year and now I'm going to have to check that out! Still can't beat the boss after the bridge section, but now I can't beat it with peg legs.
