This is a low budget licensed anime game of a old 70s mecha anime. It has some 6 open stages with main and side objectives scattered about as well as enemy patrols and collectable items to level your abilities with. The main gameplay of these levels is a 3D beat-em-up. In-between those stages are some 2D arcade shoot-em-up levels and 3D Rail Shooter levels. None of these sections are as good or difficult as other popular games in their respective genres, but they are competent enough to still be fun. The voice acting and cutscenes are quite solid though and playing through the game feels like playing through an arc of the anime. That said the game did have a few lag spikes at times so be warned that that might happen even on computers that should be good enough to play a game that looks like this. The beat-em-up sections are the most competent then the SHMUP sections are okay, and the 3D rail shooter sections are bellow average. The Beat-em-up sections have your standard light attack (which only hits 1 enemy), Heavy Attack (that can hit multiple enemies), and a dodge roll; but you also get special abilities tied to meter including Anti-Gravity (stuns enemies in front of you), Shoulder Boomerang (a projectile that can be used alongside light attacks), and a rocket punch that leads into a choke slam that can hit multiple enemies with the slam. As you gather materials from enemy encounters and side objectives you can unlock more abilities like throwing the Double Harken for a multihitting projectile, A Screw Punch which removes enemy armor, A Finger Lazer counter attack that you can activate on a perfectly timed dodge that can hit multiple enemies in a line, and a super move called Space Lightning which does massive damage in a large area in front of you often killing any minor enemies and majorly wounding bosses. Enemy armor can be stripped with the screw punch, Space Lightning, or Finger Lazers; but if you can't use those then it can be removed by hitting the enemy with the attack that appears above their head (light attack, heavy attack, or anti-gravity). Most enemies with armor have multiple layers, but it will show you each layer meaning you can punch in the sequence of attacks rather quickly. The armor system and the variety of enemies leads to you having to think a little about how you can most quickly get through a enemy encounter. Other than the bosses though you aren't really in much danger of losing all your health as you can spend energy to regain health and you get energy from punching the enemies. You also always regain 1 bar of energy if you have none and no enemies besides the bosses are aggressive enough to hurt you if you run away. Overall I still recommend this game if you find it for very cheap. I got it as part of a $14 dollar bundle that came with 10 games. If you find it for cheap and feel like a easy game that has a simple yet enjoyable story with some memorable mecha robot designs and cheesy yet wholesome characters then give this game a shot, but don't pay more than $10s for it. Be warned that the game is rather short. WIthout going for all the side objectives, you can probably finish it in 4-6 hours. That said with the open nature of the stages and the puzzle of dealing with enemy armor, this game might be fun for speedrunners.
A very nice surprise! I did get the game on sale, but even the full price is pretty reasonable. The gameplay is rather basic in most scenarios but changes from level to level keeping things fresh. I'm not familiar with the anime but as an enjoyer of Mecha I found more than enough to keep me entertained so far.
This is what happens when you make a videogame about Devin Townsend's Planet ZIltoid concept album, but forget that it's all about a cup of coffee (Listen to the album online somewhere, it will make sense). This is how you bring an old property forward. You don't have to reinvent it, just re-tool how people interact with it. I haven't watched the core series and have only grazed info on it outside of this game out of curiosity, but, having seen a few of these License Franchise experience games (Gundam - Journey to Jaburo, various DBZ/GT/Super games), what you get is a cliff's notes version of a series with the fights turned into missions and the fluff in between cut, short of major story points. The art style both looks good and fits the original material yet also doesn't hide that the art of the time was rough by today's standards. Not in a bad way, but it's there. The interactions are fun, there's just enough agency to not feel herded, and the path between you and feeling like you're playing the giant super robot isn't complicated. Abilities are at worst a two button combo away. There are even some deep cut references, like one of the first missions being called Prince of Space. Worth your time if you like a an easy-access action game or want to dive in to a foundational franchise for the Japanese mecha lineage.
Short game you can beat in a weekend. Very basic hack and slack but it's Mecha which we don't get a lot in this simple style. Get it on sale.
Excellent jeux PS3!
It is fun if you were a fan of the anime series. It is faily repetitive and not very polished but the combat is satifying and fun. I am enjoying it.
