I saw the cover of the game online just looking at other titles and really liked the whole 70s/80s anime style, obviously meaning I had no prior knowledge of 'Space Adventure Cobra,' so in my short time researching I learned about the anime and instantly liked it so it was a no brainer to then try 'The Awakening.' The game uses the first 12 episodes for its story (13 if you count the Deluxe Edition DLC that has the 13th episode) where Cobra, a legendary pirate seemingly dies..... until the notorious Psychogun is seen in action alerting the Space Pirate Guild that the notorious Cobra is indeed alive, but under a new look. Gameplay involves you platforming and shooting in a 2D space and while it looks and feels fun to go through there are some problems with the controls where being precise just becomes tricky. It's not the platforming as running from point A to B feels fast and smooth, but more about shooting as aiming and moving both revolve on the same stick, I don't think I need to say how redundant it can be, but you can and will get used to it once you play enough as you can just blast your way through levels. The Pyschogun is one of the best things about the game as you can slow down time to send out a path on where your bullet is gonna go and you can lock on to 4 sometimes more enemies if you're fast enough and just wipe them out instantly, I do have a problem with this as it uses aim assist and for the most part it works fine, but it will just take it's own path sometimes hitting things like buttons that you've hit before or it just completely ignores your input, "Why don't you just turn it off?" well when you do turn this off, oh cool I have control, but now it improperly marks enemies or doesn't at all causing you to turn the assist back on. Again the assist works fine for most of the time, you won't notice the pathing most times and will ignore it, but if you notice you will notice. One thing that I really loved was that they used the anime as cutscenes most of the time when transitioning from point to point. Is it lazy? For sure, but when it's such a fun and cheesy thing to watch/play it just doesn't matter for the most part. Also if some people are familiar, a lot of these cartoons being in 3D always seems off and weird, even if it is for cutscenes. For achievement hunters out there, this is a pretty easy game to 100% through. It's more of it being repetitive and having to go for collectibles and S ranks, not hard at all, but takes some time. TL;DR; The game being based off the anime series has a fun 80s vibe to it. While the game itself can be tedious and repetitive everything feels good and populated enough to at least not be boring and gives you a fun game to play through even if the controls need time to get used to. I would give this a recommendation, but maybe on a sale or if you're a fan of the anime series itself. Also skip the deluxe dlc unless you really like 'Space Cobra' as it doesn't really add anything.
I love it! I'm a huge fan of all things Cobra and I was totally not expecting this game until I stumbled across the trailer. I tried the demo and loved it then bought the game as soon as saw it was released. I love how they use the show as cut scenes and implement elements from the show as game mechanics. Clearly the people who worked on this were fans of the show as well! The legendary Psycho Gun especially feels great! It's a 4 in 1 gun with slight aim assist while normal shooting, a wider charge blast, manually targeted psycho chain blasts, and a screen clearing ultra blast. The Smash Bros. style dash/dodging is great too. Jumping, dodging, and ledge clinging feels speedy and tight. I've seen some valid complaints on here but they don't bother me too much. Here are some tips to counter some of the minor game-play issues and maximize your enjoyment: - The controls feel can feel a little swimmy at times, especially when trying to aim straight up or straight down. Cobra will tend to run to the side and shoot diagonally instead. I have this same problem in a lot of twinstick sidescrollers. Just use the static aiming (right bumper on default controls) to counter it when you want to aim up or down. You can even just tap it for a quick up or down shot. - Avoid using melee while running. There's a long animation that will have you eating bullets as you punch, so be sure to stop quickly before punching or use the jump kick instead, which are both instant. - I'm half way through and I still haven't memorized all the moves. Some require multiple buttons at the same time, luckily those are written out on the screen so you don't have to remember them anyway. Just glance over when you want to use them. - Level design allows for multiple play-styles and playthroughs. You can take your time to clear all the enemies, solve puzzles, and explore every nook and cranny for power-ups (some crannies you'll need to come back to access later). Or you can speed run every level by running/dodging past the enemies in many cases. It sort of becomes a jump and dash Celeste-style platformer at that point, which is fun. Level scoring is time based not score/kill based so you might want to do your exploring/collecting on the first playthrough, then speed run the second for score like I plan to. Overall a super fun game that is very faithful to one of my favorite anime shows!
i do not recommend this game it has no save points until you kill the boss when you exit the game you have to start right back at the start of the level no saves or manual save
If you like the 1980s Space Adventure Cobra anime and an action game that plays exactly like Metroid Dread sounds cool to you (don't get the wrong idea from this comparison it's NOT a metroidvania it's strictly an action-platformer) this is an easy recommend, I find it comparable to Robocop: Rogue City in terms of fun and passion for the source material despite a low budget. The Psychogun's directable firing mechanic is pretty snappy and never gets tiresome or gimmicky, once you get the hang of everything the combat flows pretty smoothly and boils down to a matter of figuring out the best order to deal with targets. The one annoying thing is that the low health warning comes in the form of Cobra saying "I don't feel so good." which I got so tired of hearing that I'd honestly rather have constant beeping at low health or something. There's French, English and JP voiceovers. I've listened to the English and played mostly in JP, the performances were all good. I can't assess the quality of the French voices as I didn't touch those. I would not recommend this to a non-fan of the Cobra series or at least not if you didn't intend to watch the show afterwards, as even though it just retells the anime storyline 1:1 there are some inconsistencies that result from oversights and the fact that they had no cutscene budget and just recycled clips from the anime, like for example in one instance a character who wasn't in a stage appeared out of nowhere for a few seconds because they had to use a clip from the show where they're present. If you hadn't seen the show you might also find that it ends on an inconclusive point because it only adapts the show's first 12 (out of 31) episodes.
Great fun game and worth playing.
It's a decent 2d platformer based off a great 80's anime. I would really only play it after watching the anime as it's just a rehash of the show with some extra/altered scenario's to fit the game. It does get repetitive but it never really overstayed its welcome. The dub is pretty bad so I sticked with the Japanese voices while playing. It can be hard to read and play at the same time but usually nothing of extreme importance is said during gameplay. Also I liked how Cobra's Psychogun controls similarly to Samus's Blaster in Metroid: Samus Returns. Overall, it's a decent experience that I would recommend after the anime.
