I wont say spoilers but I'll say the ending was the perfect bad mix of terribly cliche predictability and an attempt at the "avant garde" indecipherable. The gameplay was pretty ok boomershooter-fair but every time it felt like we might get any kind of world building, it vanished into handwaved surrealism. The alt-history seemed to just ignore or forget what England was like in the 1940s (food rations and bomb shelters-- unless the dev just chose to say WW2 never happened and never expressed that in the plot). In truth it could have used alot less Bioshock Infinite and alot more System Shock 2.
"An Astonishing Lack of Care" Twisted Tower is a game set in 1944 England that fails to mention World War 2 even once, opens in a drive-in theater the likes England did not have at that time, on October 31 well outside of the Summer months the rare few English drive-ins operate. Vincent is an aspiring surgeon (according to his backstory and precisely zero plot events or dialog) with the memory of a goldfish and a complicated family life whose dreams hinge on recalling the word, "Epidermis;" and Charlotte is a woman. Her only real character trait is how much she loves the movie "The Twisted Tower," directed by, written by, and starring the game's villain, V. C. Twister - it's the best movie of all time! It won 8 Academy awards, despite there only being 7 it was eligible for in its release year! The loving couple watch it on TV during the 1939 to 1946 TV blackout in England, 12 years before feature films like The Wizard of Oz would be broadcast due to issues about royalties. It took me 30 minutes of reading wikipedia to find all that history out, which tells you exactly how much thought was put into the script. After Charlotte disappears, Vincent has to follow her to an abandoned but not that abandoned amusement park with a huge tower she is not at the top of. First she's on the lower level, then one floor up, then down and across the bridge to the fairground, then kinda floating up and around it. Structurally, a tower provides the absolute simplest concept for a story, and yet even that fails to materialize. Narratively, the game is far more concerned with the events just prior to the story. A series of Newspaper articles give a "Rise and Fall" story for our villain: Made the best move ever, made several flops, disappeared, came back. But the majority of lore is letters and recordings of Vincent, where we learn he failed to be a surgeon due to a vocabulary test, he is the primary caregiver for his schizophrenic sister Dorothy and her son Piper, his mother is demeaning and condescending to him at every opportunity, and he has a little meet-cute into relationship with Charlotte who loves movies. None of this matters. It never comes back. You could imagine a scene where Charlotte tries to appeal to VC Twister by citing things she loves about his movies, or Vincent can predict a trap because it's just like that scene in that movie. Maybe Vincent has to do surgery to save Charlotte and says something like, "That'll show the Royal Academy of Surgeons what an epidermis is." But, no. Even when Vincent is taunted with the line Charlotte accepts his proposal with, that is dropped just as soon as it appears. Every element is isolated to its spot and dares not affect anything else. The tower has 5 main levels and a lobby you return to. Each level is a linear set of rooms with sporadic combat and a theme that occasionally comes through. It's unclear if the game is meant to be Bioshock style exploration/horror/resource management or a more boomer shooter arena style: for the former, the levels are too short and linear, the enemies aren't engaging enough, the ammo and health items too high, they give you 9 guns, and you have an parkour moves; for the latter the pacing is all wrong with the pickups since you have to press "E" for every one, the combat arenas drip feed enemies in too slow for anything interesting to happen, the ammo capacities are pathetic, and the arenas too few. The guns are charming with rubber band actions, a big magnifying glass "scope," and a gumball machine chain gun, but ultimately, they're just skins of varying amusement on basically functional guns. The Shart Gun (like Shotgun with an accent) is a real loser here, with no shell reloading common of other games shotgun, no visual styling to emphasize it's name, and no big juicy fart noise on its gas cloud alt-fire. This game actually has several moments of juvenile humor (including Nipples the clown, the villain yelling at you not to climax, and at least 3 different models of poop) but it fails to establish any kind of theming or identifiable comedic voice. Every decision made in this game seems to have been made without consideration for other decisions, without a plan for how it would contribute to the whole, and without the barest amount of research. The only link I can draw between all elements of the writing, the gameplay, and the level design, is an astonishing lack of care.

An underwhelmingly mediocre and unimaginative shooter with an extremely linear and repetitive level design both visually and in terms of layout. Most of the fights are arenas and they all nearly play out the same. The whole premise and setting are laughably bad with no attempts to add any kind of world building elements into the location or to add any kind of believability of any sort. The bizarre Bioshock comparisons are purely due to aesthetics and certainly not due to the extremely basic and simple gameplay loop. You can get a vastly better shooter at around the same price like Cultic, Turbo overkill, Selaco and many more.
I've followed the development of this game for years, and this has been well worth it. I remember not loving the demo from awhile ago, but may have been because I played that on normal difficulty, whereas here I played on hard difficulty. I would definitely recommend if you are experienced in shooters to play it on Hard ; much more satisfying, engaging, and challenging. You really need to manage your resources, especially food to get through. This is a fantastic Bioshock-style game, and if you're into that kind of game or other FPS's or indies, I'd say give this one a shot. It's pretty inexpensive, and more than worth the price. Pros: 1) The game looks and sounds great. 2) The level design really flowed well, and the design of the different areas differed well enough to not get stale. 3) The enemies are silly. Most are great to fight; some are bullet sponges and some can easily catch you off guard and burn a huge chunk of your health, but most of those are later in the game. 4) Voice acting is all great. 5) The story conclusion is pretty good. 6) Gameplay feels great: movement, gunplay, managing of food and ammo, etc. 7) Performance is pretty stable. I think once in the entire game I had an area of slight slow-down, but otherwise held up great. I don't exactly have a powerhouse of a computer, but I ran max settings like a breeze. **Any cons listed may have been addressed by the time these are read, and are me mostly being nitpicky** Settings/input-related easy fix Cons: 1) I cannot stress this enough, and I've seen this with too many shooter games: not everyone plays on 400 dpi. The mouse sensitivity is not scaled to take into account even as low as 800 dpi, which is what I use. With the scale being from 0-100%, my options are 0-3%, and everything else is too fast. Some games have something like a "Mouse Sensitivity Scale" as well as a "Mouse Sensitivity", so something like that would be appreciated. 2) For the zoom weapon(s), a hold button option for ADS would be nice. 3) An option to disable auto-switch to new weapons would also be nice. Also the pop-ups for those (tutorials) could use a toggle to not show them for repeat playthroughs. 4) FOV is shown as a percentage: so like, is it the actual FOV value or... just a percentage in a range or... ? 5) There's a bug where when you launch the game, in the main menu settings your keybinds that you've changed and saved from a previous play session are not shown correctly. But if you then load into your save, they're fine. Then exiting back to the main menu fixes what's shown there. Slightly more difficult to fix Cons: 1) Especially during big room battles, it is difficult to know if enemies are behind you. I do not want on-screen warning indicators or something, but making the enemies "bark" more and louder when they're close and behind you could improve this. 2) There are some areas that look like you can get to for secrets, but turn out to be inescapable. E.g. at the start of the next-to-last section, "Light" something I think, there's an arch entryway underneath where you can't get back up from. 3) During certain sections where you have to kill all the enemies to trigger the "open entryway" quick cutscene, specifically with spiders, they attacked me immediately after the cutscene ended. I thought all the enemies were dead; idk how that happened but is a feels bad kind of moment. The last enemy I killed was a spider before the cutscene triggered, so idk if this is an important detail. 4) Sometimes, I'm like why am I not stepping over this little curb? Why must I jump this? I will stare at it and shake my head. Not a big deal, just a nitpick. Much more difficult to fix Cons: 1) The 3D audio is inconsistent. Sometimes, like for spike traps the sound just ramps in when you're like ~10 feet away, but at like ~20 ft you can't hear it at all. Also, the directional sound is meh: pretty hard to absolutely pinpoint where things are outside your view, but understandably not an easy fix. 2) Some enemies cannot handle you being in their face. When you are repeatedly hitting them with your mallet, they just can't even. I'm surprised the shotgun duck fellow doesn't have a dodge roll or something when you get in his face. Also, the slide mechanic can be abused to dash through certain enemies to circumvent the challenge they impose. I don't have an issue with that, but stacking the "in their face" part on top of it, they could use some more deterrence or evasion or something. 3) Certain objects/surfaces are able to be phased through by certain enemies, which feels a bit jank and unfair. Not a huge issue, but what is definitely in need of a fix is when they're phasing through and can also shoot at you, and you can't shoot them (for e.g. those furnace looking things in the next to last section of the game). Not cool. 4) During the last
boss fight
of the game,
falling to your death is pretty easy and very punishing, as you die and reset to the part before the fight. When the boss fight is you mostly aiming upwards or mostly upwards, not knowing if beneath you is "there" anymore is pretty easy. The only difficult part of this boss fight is falling to your death, and is otherwise super easy and anti-climatic. I'm also surprised there weren't any fodder enemies during it, but is often seen as bad boss design; so makes sense.
It's not that big of a deal, but still worth a mention I think. Conclusion: The cons are mostly me being nitpicky, and does not dissuade me from recommending the game. It is great, as well as the developer, and I'm glad I didn't wait to play it. I'm gonna play more to wrap up all the achievements.
Well, I loved bioshock but this isn't it. Beat the game and it really wasn't all that fun. It kept me going thinking there might be more but no. If it was $5 it might be worth it. Shame, the graphics are pretty good. Jut no story or real explanation at the end. 3 out of 5 stars.
Ai use is not disclosed!!! The dev was heavily using ai to make this game because they were too lazy to figure stuff out themself . I never would have bought this had I known
Actually a fun story, solid gamplay, and good price for all it allows.
I never write reviews - but I got this game after the "overwhelmingly positive" feedback in the first few days after its release. Wow - it does not live up to it. Everything is shallow, disconnected, under-developed. The themes and gameplay tricks are half baked and uncreative. Half the guns do the same thing. There's virtually no customization or choice or rationale for anything. In the sea of games at our fingertips today, this is a hard pass.
this one is gonna bug me for awhile. dont get me wrong the game is fantastic and i was ready to give it a positive and glowing review up until the final cutscene and then getting involved with the games discord server. gross pointless incest, begging for positive reviews, perpetually telling people to keep replaying the game in different ways to find a new chapter/new ending that doesnt exist and is clearly just them wanting to pad out playtime, to one of the lead devs discouraging the use of and belittling Godot engine. "if you want to make a real game, you dont use toy game engines like Godot". dont buy this game, dont support these devs.
