More Thriller than Horror
I had the chance to beta test Twisted Tower, and I played the game with my sister. We usually play horror games together, taking turns with the controls. This game didn’t really scare us. Infact, it felt more like a good thriller than a traditional horror game. The slow unfolding of the story really worked for us, and we both enjoyed it. We found ourselves discussing and debating the story and ending for the next 3–4 days after finishing the game. So, even though it didn't scare us, it definitely left an impression. The music and sound effects were on point as well and did a great job setting the mood. Overall, this was a really enjoyable experience. Normally, we try to discuss and criticize certain aspects of the games we play, but we didn’t have any major complaints here. My sister did find a few sections difficult to get through, but she’s also relatively new to FPS games, with the Resident Evil series being her main experience with them. Get this game if you’re looking for a well-paced thriller with an interesting story and solid gameplay. We had a great time with it.

Fails to disclose the use of artificial intelligence during development, which should be clearly visible on the store page. I would not have played this game if I'd been made aware.
Failure to disclose the use of Ai in your product is incredibly scummy and something I cannot condone; unfortunately I was already past the refund window by the time I was made aware. I have no desire to fund any game that uses vibe coding or GenAi to "create" games that have been made perfectly fine for decades, without the use of the plagiarism and environment destroying regurgitation machine. Frankly it is also lazy and shows to me a lack of ones own confidence in their vision and ability. Aside from that the ending is incredibly weak and predictable, and the gameplay becomes rather stale and uninteresting around half way through the adventure. Enemies all follow a similar behavioural pattern and the level design can be a bit bland and repetitive in places. Some of the dialogue feels out of place with the setting and time the game is set and there is some clipping issues with the models (most prevalent with Gordon's hands). I found that Piper's model suffers from some jerky animations where it seems there are no key frames between his head turning during his dances--likewise there was one section of the game where Piper's model was breakdancing (again something that does not fit within the time period the game is set in) on the ceiling unable to be interacted with. One positive I will share is with the voice acting. The actors all do a decent job with the material they're given, although I would have liked Vincent's actor to emote a bit more in some scenes--however I do not fault the actor for this more so the direction they were probably given. Likewise I think a bit more dialogue from Vincent in regards to the twist at the end could have benefited his character. As it stands it comes across rather incongruous of Vincent to remain silent when the revelation
he is the son of Mr. Twister
comes to light. Finally the game also likes to trap you in combat arena's quite frequently which become repetitive and tiresome after a while; especially when it takes a while for the initial wave of enemies to spawn. Overall It's a fairly middling experience but the lack of transparency in regards to how it was made is unacceptable and I cannot recommend as a result.
A mid 2000s styled throwback title, that has the skin of Bioshock draped over it, but at its core is gameplay more reminiscent of Doom 3. Granted, the level design allows you to backtrack to almost any area in the game if you choose, but there is not much to do there. I did write up a large review for this, but due to an OS reinstall level crash I lost the original write-up. Twisted Tower is fine if you want a throwback to the mid 2000s, but I’m personally not too keen on that stuff. Also has a lot of AI in its guts that is undisclosed. Make what you will of that.
So I learned something about myself while playing this game: I really cannot be trusted with a mallet. I can and will whack everything in sight to see if it breaks and gives me tickets. Balloons? They pop. Crates? They break. Grandfather clock? Shatters. Carousel horses? They make a very sad neighing sound as you demolish them and their brethren. Cameras? Some guy will yell at you for breaking them because they’re “important.” Okay, well are they more important than me walloping in the name of science? NO, NO THEY’RE NOT. Anyway, getting into the actual review. I think the game started off strong. The visuals and scenery are great, the location is fun and campy. There's a LOT of weapons that you uncover along they way and most are familiar with a twist, but there are a few unique weapons as well you don't see often. The enemies have a cool look, the environments are fun to navigate with light puzzling, you can unlock a couple extra perks like being able to jump larger distances. But all that being said, I do feel like this game started to drag in the second half. And this is a short experience, so that's not a good thing. Steam clocks me at 9ish hours, but at least a couple of those were me idling because that's a thing I do, so I'd say I spent 6-7 hours actually playing. And a lot of that was just me smashing unnecessary ♥♥♥♥ with the mallet. Anyway, my point is that a short game should not drag at any point. But it started to feel repetitive, and the enemy variety is limited. There were a lot of weapons, but you could easily get by using just the mallet for most of the time if you wanted. There was very little challenge; I played on normal difficulty and never felt like I was seriously low on healing or ammo, and enemies go down pretty easily. I felt like the final boss was really just tedious and annoying. The story is fine but the ending was really 'meh.' The jet pack, which is the final perk you can unlock, is really underwhelming. I think the game had some fun ideas, but by the end I was pretty over it. The visuals and theme are doing a lot of heavy lifting here, while the gameplay itself is not that deep. It is intriguing that future runs will have new paths to explore, but I'm not running to replay. On a smaller note, I don't love that I had to go to the forums to find out that AI was used. The developer makes it clear that AI wasn't used in the visuals or music or voice acting, thankfully, but apparently was still used during the coding process. I guess that makes it something Steam doesn't require disclosure for, and I'm not a fan of that. I think there are of course different scales to AI usage, and I'd rather find out that AI was used for coding instead of the graphics or music or voices, but I don't support the use of AI and I might have avoided the game if I'd known before buying. But that's also on me for not doing a deeper dive. All in all, I think this is a game I'd give a neutral score to if that was an option. Since it's not, I'll give the game a thumbs up because despite the flaws, I think I enjoyed a good chunk of the experience.
Bioshock (and especially it's villain Andrew Ryan) became iconic by asking a simple question: "Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?" Twisted Tower and it's villain do not greet the player with any such thought provoking dilemma, but with: "I got your princess, Mario. Get cucked." Just like Atomic Heart (and every other Bioshock wannabe) Twisted Tower fails to understand the very core which made that game what it is to this very day. Beeing a well thought out game and having fantastical elements, like Plasmids or bubble gum machine guns, are not mutually exclusive.
Let me start of this by saying i wanted to like the game. The bioshock inspiration is oozing out of everything in this game and i love all of the bioshocks but..... I've learned that the creator uses alot of gen ai for coding and even takes sponsors from ai corps. Now i dont think ai in uses of coding is near as bad as other things and he states on his youtube that no art or music or assets in gen are ai but it still feel bad that he didnt publicly disclose this on the store page. Gen ai in any aspect should not be in art and thats what gaming is its art. So taking the human out of it just feel like you dont care enough to put in the effort or money to have it be human.
this is like Bioshock-lite, with one of the worst, most souring endings I've ever experienced. If you enjoyed Bioshock and want more, just go play Bioshock again. This really, genuinely, is not worth it. Also the combat really doesn't feel great. I played on the standard difficulty and it was just a little bit spongey for my tastes.
