A Metroidvania that answers the question "what if Samus was an '80s post-apocalypse hero with a BMX bike instead of a spaceship?". Good graphics, good plot, good gameplay, good for America. In fact, it wasn't until later that I realized it was based on a movie. I thought "woah, that explains the number of film companies that show when you start the game". That makes this game even rarer: an actually *good* movie tie in game!
Really fun tough-as-nails Metroidvania. A cult classic for the genre, just like the movie it's based on!
Turbo Kid
Big fan of the movie. Big fan of metroidvanias. Can't really recommend this one. I like the art style and how the journal fills out as you interact with people. Other than that, just couldn't enjoy exploration or combat a whole lot. Maybe it's meant to fit retro, but losing 30 min I spent exploring because I didn't run into a safe spot is not cool. Abilitites feel a bit wonky. Enemies don't feel fun to fight.
Holy hell, why aren't people talking about this game more? It's incredible. The art style, the outrageous amounts of artistic detail, the characters, the lore, THE SOUNDTRACK. All it is superb. The gameplay is solid too. The enemies have variety, and the weapon upgrades add some fun. There are bazillions of secrets and fun little things to find. The bike is a fun way to traverse and to solve certain puzzles (intentionally or through jank). Most of the negative reviews are about difficulty, so let's talk about that: yes, it's kind of a hard game. Yes, when you die you lose progress since your last save point. But it's not that bad; there are plenty of save points, and the difficulty isn't nearly as high as some other beloved games in the genre (looking at you, Silksong). You'll be challenged, but not unfairly. I'm 2 years late to the game, but I think this would be my GOTY for 2024.
Just try it, you won't regret it! Whether you prefer the original movie or Metroidanias.
Don't sleep on this game! I turbocharged my way through Turbo Kid in a few days, and I genuinely can't wait to do it again!
I'm not the biggest Metroidvania person out there, but Turbo Kid has genuinely been one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in years. From the moment I started playing, I was unable to put down my controller, despite the annoyance that caused with my wife. I would just think about wanting to explore more of this world! The progression just feels smooth, the world tailormade to your moveset. You feel yourself getting better at the game over time and getting more powerful with each upgrade. The gameplay, the challenge, the progression, the music,... oh my god the music, I can't tell you how amazing it is. I already knew Le Matos from the movie this game is based on, with Highway 64 being one of my favorite songs (a song that is actually in this game as a bonus!), but here they just outdid themselves with over a dozen bangers that can stand on their own!
The game is amazing, but the soundtrack Le Matos created is a masterpiece on its own. I would spend hours in one area, to just have to be somewhere irl and putting that area song on in my car on the way there!
Is there anything bad? I wish the game were longer! Sometimes it feels like you're staring into the dark, like not knowing where to find the things. So you're just exploring and seeing what you can find. But that actually makes the game even more enjoyable! Oh wait, we were supposed to talk about the negatives... I think my only major gripe is the optional time-based challenges, as they break the momentum and some feel annoyingly hard to get gold on compared to the main game. That said, I will be fair that there is definitely a skill threshold here that you need to have to enjoy the game. The negative reviews I've seen really seem to boil down to this exact issue. I usually never say this, but 'git gud' bro. This game is not at some ungodly difficulty that only a handful of people can work through. If you don't want to be challenged at all and be handheld throughout the game, that's on you. But to anybody who likes a challenge and be pushed a little, you won't regret buying this!
I wished I stopped playing the game at the two hours mark and refunded it. But now four hours in it is too late, and the game is still "meh". The world is uninteresting, the level design is messy, the bike gimmick is annoying... I really don't like it!
