It had fairly solid reviews as a Metroidvania, but what really sparked my interest was the idea of being able to play as more than one character. The vast majority of games in that genre revolve around powering up the main character, effectively putting all of those eggs into one basket. Spreading that out amongst a small crew with different abilities and styles sounded interesting to me, and I'm glad I gave it a chance.
Gameplay
Instead of piloting a single character that houses all of the abilities, health upgrades, and so forth, MP really does feel like a game where you're sharing the love amongst a party. Even the way each character moves has a distinct approach, so how you engage in platforming requires switching between them at the right times. Enemies also have weaknesses to specific kinds of attacks, so although you can use anybody and brute force it if necessary, switching to the right character can greatly reduce how long it takes to beat them. Normally, I don't think I'd have thought dividing your attention like this would be a good idea, especially since it's not a larger game with significantly more upgrades. However, it worked much better than I'd have anticipated, and made for an enjoyable title to beat. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3754312644
Controls
At around the midway point of the game, as I was learning new moves for all of the characters I was able to use, I would screw up and push the wrong button. However, with more practice at switching characters on the fly in order to maximize my platforming, it became easier for me to keep their moves in order. Since each character has different attack styles and enemy weaknesses, there's a reason to bring out all of them at some point, even if for movement purposes, I'd choose one over the other more often.
Story
Considering the length of the playthrough, I think there's a reasonable amount of story spread throughout your journey. As you find new characters who join your cause, they're given enough introduction and spotlight to understand why they'd decide to help. The mix of personalities and perspectives makes for a good sense of tension that it feels as if your actions matter, without becoming a melodrama, or coming across like people are acting up for attention. I find the optimism of Laguna just as believable as the cynical side shown by Charlotte. If the problems affecting you and people you care about repeatedly gets sidelined for issues deemed more important, after a while, it starts feeling personal, “No, it's fine, ignore us again. I get it, we don't matter.” https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3754311176
Visuals
What probably made me hesitant about this title was its visuals, as they aren't the most impressive feature of the game. Ironically, I think the in-game footage looks better than the still images of the main characters talking with each other. I've said before that I'm not an artist, yet when the action slows down and you're reading dialogue, that's when you want the art to be strongest. It lets the audience draw closer to the characters, reading their facial expressions, and seeing how they react to new developments. Aside from this minor issue though, the animation of characters running and jumping around biological areas was done well, as the environment looked a little surreal, yet also organic.
Sound Design
Considering the setting, it could have been a challenge to make a soundtrack themed entirely around being inside a creature without aiming for a body horror vibe. Instead, I'd describe the music as having more of a sci-fi theme, which works reasonably well since the massive animal is floating in the vastness of space. When listening to the music, it seems to be made from a synthesizer, as the notes don't sound like they come from specific instruments, yet most of them sound familiar across numerous songs. One downside is that every song is rather short, so it doesn't take long for them to repeat on themselves as long as you're in the same area for a while. Despite this, if it weren't for the context of a game, I'd say many of them would work well for dancing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3754310472
Pros
🌟 Instead of traditional difficulty modes, you can adjust how much damage and defense your team has. It serves a similar purpose, but doesn't change things like enemy density, or which foes you encounter. 🌟 The setting lacks enough NPCs to match the theoretical scale talked about. However, the level design builds the location well enough. 🌟 It has compelling characters.
Cons
❌ I wouldn't say using each character felt equally good. The flamethrower was a tolerable weapon, but I found piloting the mech my least favorite. ❌ It wasn't always clear where I could go next with the characters and moves I had available.
Tips
🔍 Double-check the map before jumping into the blood stream. It's easy to wind up going the wrong way if you don't pay attention. 🔍 The final boss has an instant death attack, which only takes a minor touch to trigger. It's honestly pretty cheap. 🔍 If you're going for 100%, be positive you've killed all the enemies needed in your checklist.
Final Thoughts
By the time I was finishing my playthrough, I was invested in the story of the main characters, and the ecosystem they were all living in. Since the massive creature is treated as almost mindless, there's not much connection made with it as a character, but I did care about the fate of those that lived within it. If you take the time to speak with everyone, you'll learn more about not just the playable characters, but also some of the enemies. Even though the snow-causing parasite was cruel, she had enough sense to realize destroying the host would be detrimental to herself as well, so she wasn't on board with the primary antagonist's desires. Having a compelling Metroidvania where your abilities get split up fairly across four separate characters, while developing an engaging story, isn't necessarily that easy, so I applaud the developers. MP was definitely worth my time. Really hard to rate this game. Art is great, gameplay is good. Exploration isn't very rewarding. And I also feel like the balancing towards the end is just stupidly bad, no checkpoints and enemies hit very hard. Game is also very short, beat it in 4 hours. Sorry, but I have to give this one a thumbs down. If you like this game, give Iconoclasts a try. Similar faults, but that game is waaaay more charming.
I think it says a lot that, although I have some annoyances and misgivings about the enemies and navigation of this game, my net view on it was very positive. It's a short game, pretty challenging in some sections, but very well-designed. Lots of unique enemy types, and a slow buildup of cool abilities that tend to have combat applications as well as platforming. Besides the imaginative worldbuilding (which is actually comprehensible, unlike many soulslikes/metroidvanias) the star of the show is the characters you play as. You start with one warrior named Silex, who slowly gains comrades through the game. The core story of "evil invading parasites" is not incredibly complex; but the relationship between the characters is. They each have different experiences and motivations driving them forward, and it's all very well reinforced. Most of the "new ability" moments of the game have more to do with character-building or worldbuilding than simply consuming some powerup. This even comes out through the gameplay in the health system. Each character has their own health bar, and anyone hitting 0 HP first instead gets rescued by some other character taking the brunt of the blow (often with a heroic line), saving that character from death. The threat of the parasites is treated in a very real way, with the threat of death and the loss of their only home weighing as a genuine possibility to the cast. This comes to a head the most towards the ending.
At the final boss, the "0 HP = Game Over" rule no longer applies. It's a hard boss, so it's very plausible you'll only make it through with some of these characters remaining. There are over a dozen remarkably accurate, individual endings that give different responses and conversations for whoever's survived the final encounter.
Some other vague annoyances: Some enemies can feel very frustrating and overwhelming before you've worked out any "tricks" or patterns to them. Some periods of the game force you to go a pretty long distance between save points. At times, you find yourself feeling you're closer to death than you really are, with maybe 2-3 characters at 5 HP each, but having 4 rescues left. The navigation is not fun. Characters will tell you "Maybe you should go North / East" - but the most obvious approaches to go that way are locked off, and instead you need to wander to a random part of the map for a new ability. Because of the way a one-way fast travel system, the blood vessels, is enforced, re-exploring old areas for a path sometimes means repeating a bunch of platforming challenges you were done with the first time. One section involving acid lakes specifically required the use of an Item - in my case, I hadn't considered the Items much, so it was baffling at first. Those annoyances conveyed though, I still enjoyed the game taken as a whole. The challenge was refreshing, and not impossible to adjust to, and the writing was incredibly genuine for what seems like such a simple, Saturday-morning premise.
Excellent metroidvania featuring a unique living world to explore and protect from invasive parasites. The different playable characters have a wide range of abilities adding a lot of variety. While the overall level design is very good, the navigation takes some getting used to and it can be difficult to figure out how to access new areas. If you have the patience for being lost in an interesting world, its definitely worth playing.
Fun.
This is a fun platform/metroidvania game with an interesting gameplay. Your game world is within the body of a larger being, and you travel through the artery to different areas. There are multiple characters to switch from, each with unique main and secondary abilities. The game world could be bigger, but its not bad for indie developer.
Great little gem. The moves of the characters complement each other, nice puzzles, memorable bosses!
拉格纳好可爱😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Excellent character- driven adventure
