I have completed this game twice now. Once on PC and once on the switch, getting all four endings both times. So it should come to no surprise that I really enjoy this game. The graphics and music are great, and the SRPG gameplay is high quality. This game foregoes the expansive character building that some of the other greats allow. Although every character is unique in their gameplay, the upgrade options for every character are pretty much linear. While to some veterans this may be a downside, it also greatly lowers the barrier of entry because of how much less micomanagement this requires. You can focus most of your time on the story and the gameplay. The game is, as a result, a pretty good entry point into the genre, in my opinion. The strategy and tactics of this game largely come from learning how each unit works and interacts with other units and what kind of maps they function best in. The game is a fair challenge on normal difficulty. Grinding isn't strictly necessary as you get plenty of additional experience when you're underleveled. And even when you retreat or get defeated, you retain experience gained. The story is fairly decent, and there is a lot of it. Unfortunately it does suffer from some pacing issues, especially in the beginning. This combined with honestly middling voice acting are probably the weakest points of the game. The story has multiple choices with branching paths, giving the game plenty of replay value. One criticism is definitely that the game doesn't allow you to hop through the timeline, however. Taken together, Triangle Strategy offers some of the best and most accessible SRPG gameplay on the market. Definitely worth looking into for anyone who is either a fan or interested in the genre. Although do be prepared for a story that likes to take its time and meander.
Story is interesting enough, though a little dry and drawn out. Problem is the story is 70% of the game. Less than half the game is gameplay. And there is no actual strategy to the gameplay, unfortunately. There's a correct way to play, but there's no creativity. Stab enemies in the back, don't let enemies stab you in the back. Use the high ground, don't let the enemy use the high ground. But there's no "cleverness" to it, and victory is assured in the end because even if you fail, your units keep all the experience you got for losing and you just restart immediately. Worth it if you want a visual novel with occasional simple RPG combat gameplay breaks
Almost 30min in before first battle... which was tutorial. Another close to 4 hrs after that for the 2nd battle, which again, was 'scripted' for most part (a tournament that u end up 'losing' without even given a chacne to fight) - so 5hrs into game start and u fought 2 battles and 'lost' one automatically. Another few hours in before the story (which in of itself is shamefully bad with boring-deadpan voice acting the whole way) - Will stick it out, but if I knew this before I puchased (and due to the length of time it takes to even get a TASTE of what the game is like, no chance to get refund) I would never have wasted the money or time. Now am about 10ish hours in and STILL there really is not that many fights, and the story is just... not good. People keep saying the game 'opens up and gets better' but if u need 12+ hours to even START playing? Sorry, must be that ADHD I don't have having me write this, but skip this one and do yourself a favor, even IF it's 'free' it's not worth the cash. Further edit to review, after reaching end of game (one possible path) - total number of battles in the whole time playing (as of this edit i think was 17 hours played? admit part of that was paused time..) was 16 battles. Total. For entire game. This does not count the fake 'mock' battles which I figure they expected people to do to grind out levels. In the defense of the developers, it does have a 'new game plus' mode so u can try out other paths, but honestly, the path I took(spoiler, to free the slaves) was the only choice I found at all worth doing, rest were 'easy choices' that amounted to 'slathering on the lube and allowijng the big mean bad guys to have thier way' and tbh I am not intrested in that kind of 'choice' in a game where u should be the hero... I will not bother with any additional runs. Others likely will want to so that may be a deciding factor (the new game path, repeat playthoughs and more 'to see') so make of it as u will.
The tactics gameplay is decently good here. Unfortunately, the amount of time in between those combat sections is way too long - often bogged down by a number of unnecessary things. Dialogue is really drawn out, with some very hit or miss voice acting. Before every battle there is an exploration phase where you can run around and find loot while talking to NPCs and party members. This gets old the third time you're rounding the same village layout. Every "cutscene" has to be selected from the overworld map, needing a loading screen in and out of it. And then you're back at point one every time with the overly long dialogue. Levelling and upgrading your party also requires loading in and out of an area, with a couple of different NPCs involved. Small things like this do add up to a lot of "paperwork" time. If these gripes were more streamlined I could see it knocking off several hours from the average completion time for this game. To that end, I don't recommend unless you have a lot of time to commit to this game and don't mind pretty subpar writing.
There is not enough game in this. You will spend more time watching a static scene with some dialogue than you will spend doing anything interactive. The main experience is watching bland cutscenes play on and on and on. And then there are the even worse bits where you need to walk around and push button at each character and shining object. When the actual tactical gameplay happens the battlefields are tiny and not much strategy can be applied. Unit customization is basically nonexistent, extra units are recruited by just playing yet another cutscene that randomly pops up. The branching decision gimmick is overblown and annoying in its execution. As someone that loves SRPGs and the HD2D art style I still dropped this game halfway through as I just couldn't take it any more. I really tried to give it a chance to see if it improves but no, it doesn't. Even with the summer sale this was a bad buy.
I literally cannot with the more-cliche-than-ChatGPT2.0 dialog. It may be the worst I've ever come across (although my bar has risen in the last couple decades so there may be worse from back then I'm forgetting). I have no doubt the tactical bones are good and get better, but after the first three missions I'd rather run a drill through my eye than have to suffer through more words coming out of literally anybody's mouths. It may be the fact that it's voiced that's making it truly unbearable. Somehow the obviously human voice actors that portray some vocal character make the brain-bleedingly dry written dialog so very much worse. Not sure if the VO is toggleable but I will never even boot the game again to check. It's a shame I won't get to the good part but nothing is worth paying the price of sitting through that styrofoam dialog.
An excellent game with a really engaging story. The whole choice system with different endings kept me curious, wondering how things would play out if I picked something else. Chasing all the achievements took a while, but when that last one popped, it felt amazing. I ended up spending over 200 hours on it. Triangle Strategy comes from the same team behind Octopath Traveler, and you can definitely feel the influence, the art , the atmosphere, and the way the story pulls you in all carry that same charm. If you enjoyed Octopath, this one feels like its tactical sibling.
"Triangle Strategy is a masterclass in tactical gameplay, political storytelling, and player choice. Easily one of the best strategy RPGs ever made
I played this some time ago on switch but at that point I only did the "golden route" so I decided to get it for pc as well and do all of the routes because achievements are my drug. I really felt like I was going insane the last route but pushed through and still left the game feeling happy to have played it. So yes, I recommend it to anyone that likes these kinds of games.
