It's not the worst game in the world, by any stretch. But. - It runs at 30 fps and that fps is tied to the animations etc, so it's stuck there permanently - The keybinds are horrid, and though it may be possible to edit them via an xml file, it's not populated by default so you'd need to know the correct parameters. In-game keybind config simply does not work. - There is no options menu. No way to turn down the music (just off), no way to change resolution, screen mode, graphics, nothing. For a game 20 years in development, yeah I expected more here. - This shouldn't be a negative, but it feels like the game Tyrian except you can go in all directions. Enemy space stations are easily dispatched with your starter ship, and enemy ships are mostly just cannon fodder and die in one or two hits. I guess the game was originally intended as a roguelike - it shows. - As far as I've seen, there's only one active weapon slot pr ship, no matter how big it is. Boring. - The whole fuel system is terrible. Fuel seems to get spent even if you are docked - that's just bad design. It gets better later on with fuel efficiency and larger reactors, but with apparently no way of fuel scooping (there was one, but the dev removed it), it will always be an annoyance. At 50% off, it's good enough for killing a few hours, and the visuals aren't terrible (apart from the atrocious 30 fps cap). Music is decent too, but far too loud and with no way of turning it down. May be best to download this one for free (full game, minus expansions). I did, played it for a bit and thought it was good enough for a 50% purchase, but eh, not really.
Too glitchy for how simplistic it is. Earning money to buy upgrades is fun for a short while but there is nothing else here. You play the game for seven or so hours and then it just sort of ends.
It is dry, repetitive, there are no ship upgrades, your weapon permanantly turns off when your reactor overloads, forcing you to turn it back on rather than just stopping firing. And the economy is wonky; half your loot can only be sold to a specific geezer who in turn only buys a specific amount of said loot. Exploration is cracked as well, with the stargates in weird positions, and your sensor range pretty low so you gotta go through the real boring grind of meandering across the entire system every single time to find the gate.
I have played more than 95 hours before I used Steam. I played much of the free version before it was fully released, and even on Steam. A fun game that tickles that need to loot and improve your ship. This game is one of the reasons why I never passed the CPA exam all those years ago. Not going to lie I was very disappointed that the game doesn't have a "Part 2" yet because I was very excited to recently get to the end of the current chapter. I feel like the game would be improved by a few quality of life UI features, but otherwise gameplay is still solid. I very much think a fleet addition, not just automatons, would be great, with other AI captains joining your adventures. I really wanted a home base to store my loot as well.
This game is still amazing. I used to play it and even authored a few mods back in the early 2000's. I'm so happy it has come to steam, and I can support the dev.
Played this game since v0.6 in my childhood. With each update it only keeps getting better and better.
I played this game back when it was free. Now and then I still think about it. It's not perfect, but it's very different from any other space game. That's rare today -- that feeling of specificity.
A brilliant yet flawed game. In development for well over 20 years now, and it shows in both positive and negative ways. The game is expansive, with tons of ships, weapons, items, factions etc. On the other hand, There is little explicit plot tying these together. There are only a handful of explicit missions to follow. There are many systems, and some of them are quite large. On the other hand, systems start out unexplored and unless you have a mapping item it's a real pain to trek across a large map hoping to find POIs. Doing this over and over gets repetitive. There are several factions you can join and climb the ranks of, by completing randomly generated missions. On the other hand, because of the randomness, you might not find enough of these missions to progress and therefore be stuck. The galaxy is large but feels static. Trade resources generally do not replenish, and stations eventually stop buying certain items. As a result, once you're done with a system, there is no money to be made, you generally have no reason to go back there, and it's effectively dead to you. I get this is a reason to continue pushing forward, but it would be nice to have a more lively game. A full playthrough will take you many hours, a lot of it repetitive. On the other hand, there is a certain satisfaction in slowly upgrading your ship from a leaky rustbucket to an impenetrable killing machine able to solo enemy fleets. I would recommend playing the base campaign (for free!) first to see whether you want to pony up for the expansions.
