A brilliant yet flawed game. In development for well over 20 years now, and it shows in both positive and negative ways. The game is expansive, with tons of ships, weapons, items, factions etc. On the other hand, There is little explicit plot tying these together. There are only a handful of explicit missions to follow. There are many systems, and some of them are quite large. On the other hand, systems start out unexplored and unless you have a mapping item it's a real pain to trek across a large map hoping to find POIs. Doing this over and over gets repetitive. There are several factions you can join and climb the ranks of, by completing randomly generated missions. On the other hand, because of the randomness, you might not find enough of these missions to progress and therefore be stuck. The galaxy is large but feels static. Trade resources generally do not replenish, and stations eventually stop buying certain items. As a result, once you're done with a system, there is no money to be made, you generally have no reason to go back there, and it's effectively dead to you. I get this is a reason to continue pushing forward, but it would be nice to have a more lively game. A full playthrough will take you many hours, a lot of it repetitive. On the other hand, there is a certain satisfaction in slowly upgrading your ship from a leaky rustbucket to an impenetrable killing machine able to solo enemy fleets. I would recommend playing the base campaign (for free!) first to see whether you want to pony up for the expansions.
I think I've barely scratched the surface and I'm hooked. There's so much here. As others state there is some jank: You have to rebind every single key, you have to click 5-6 times for every ship you loot. Just little stupid stuff. I'm telling you, this guy is just a few QOL features away from a masterpiece! So much fun for a potato laptop. Love this game. It's like Star Valor but with a point to it all. SPAZ is too weird for me to figure out, I just bounce off it every time. The best game I've played in this style is Starcom Unknown Space, unfortunately there is zero replay ability on that one. Also if you like this kind of game give Dredge a try.
21 hours and i have not even done half of it, the game has the potential to be big, It is like Sid Mier's Pirates game but in space, and better. The Star systems are full of things to do, you will have many ships to choose to reach your destiny, and so many different playstyles. yet, i cant outright recommend this game to people. There are things to do yes, but they are very similar, there is story but it takes time to be interesting. There are no room for errors. fail a mission once, never getting that again (but that cannot be counted as entirely a fail), while in the menu i mistakenly shot a friendly space station and it is still hostile, there is not enough information in game or on the interrnet to figure out what is the best thing to choose for your ship, and the game is not designed to train you to learn it as you go as well. There are some missions that if you follow you understand or get an idea of where everything is in a system but all the time. i do not live in that universe, i cannot be trusted upon to know about it from the start. I noticed something very odd, very basic achievements are being shown as rare, as in less than 10% or 8% of the people have achieved that, for example finishing an escort mission for the first time, That is too easy to actually be a rare acheivement, so i think many people are buying and/or starting this game but loosing interest very early on but do not feel bad enough to leave a bad review.l apprerently the game has been in development for 10 years, and still being developed,( not sure but think that is what i read somewhere). There is a free version of the game allegedly which has parts of the game without the extended adventures. it is good idea to try that before buying if you are on the fence or never played a game like this. But some people have mentioned bugs and i have to say i cannot recall encountering any. Do I recommend the game? hard to really say. it is too much work for what it is, also repeatative. I think there needs to be two updates, a quality of life update and a campaign structure and mission variety update. As i said the game has potential but has not reached a certain level that i can recommend this to my other friends. The game is still being updated so it might get better? hope it becomes "project zomboid" of space exploration games. for now, Potato is at a loss about recommending it.
This is an extremely fun game with HIGH replayability. I have always enjoyed it, and you probably will, too. Give it a shot, you won't regret it. There are myriad strategies, little hidden details, synergies to be found, and just a ton of fun to be had. The sheer volume of things can be mildly intimidating when you first start, but it's very intuitive and you'll pick up the basics quickly. Easy to get started, any 10 year old can enjoy it, but very high skill ceiling for those that want it difficult.

Like the end credits says: NetHack meets Star Control 2. It's fully keyboard-operational! This is such an important feature that other top-down space sims and roguelites sometimes miss.
Amazing game that i still return from time to time. its simple, wast, peaceful and hardcore. would like multiplayer and sandbox also inf arena. The most interesting thing in this game is that it has real laws of our world of CONSEQUENCE and FAITH
"Not bad for an old-timer!" This game is a living relic being nearly 30 years old. Despite that, it is pretty fun to play and explore. The modding in this game will add more hours of play-value. However, the main game is more linear (your main source of loot in this game is killing the bad guys and looting their wrecks) than you would expect from a "roguelike". This game especially apparent when approaching the lategame where you can only interact with shops and hostile forces, with missions being a routine like "fetch" or "kill the bad guys marked for you". SOTP and DLCS seem rather unfinished and might need more non-linearity for game progression
I have over 600 hours in this game and recently re-purchased it on Steam. I was initially drawn in by what felt like a mash-up of Escape Velocity: Override and Diablo 2, games that I loved twenty years ago. On the second or third playthrough, my appreciation for this unique hybrid of sandbox trader and dungeon crawler deepened. The opaque crafting and questing systems began to reveal their genius. While the technical execution is imperfect, this being a massive one man labor of love, there is a compelling vision here. The story, and the ship customization, have some great payoffs. It's punishingly difficult at first, but it's very much worth pushing through your first dozen deaths. Keep going. There is so much to discover. If you get far enough to start using the Teraton Fabricators and taking on your first Phobos, you'll be hooked.
42 hours on record but hundreds, if not over a thousand, from before I bought it on Steam (from their website). I grew up playing this game, and it's one of the only 10/10 games I've ever played. If you're on the fence as to whether or not to try it, do so, because no matter how good you think it is, it's better.
