This was a great game till the last update. I even bought it for friends. I now regret that decision. The dev introduced multiple new bugs (UI scrolling), but that could all be forgiven. The introduction of "reactor heat" however is such a undercooked mechanic that it breaks things that befor it's introduction worked flawless. Cloaking a ship - a whole faction i might add is based on this - suddenly has a reactor melt down as soon as you go cloaking. (terran cloaking devise). Ships not from this faction are even worse when you try cloaking. Other isses were (now "fixed") that class 1 (shuttles) and class 3 (corvettes) died due to reactor melting while ideling on former "save levels". The dev themselves are like "yea, no changes to former energy levels". In practise it's a lie for all but the biggest ships (class 6 dreadnaughts) that somehow have no heat problems whatsoever. Other solutions by the dev: "play on a lower difficulty so reactor heat is less impactfull" (that reduces chances of rare loot by a factor of like ... 10x to 100x ... wish i was joking). And the switch up for small ship pilot where the fight is already extremly hecktic and 1 mistake can kill you is to ... now also in combat adjust your energy levels or your reactor melts. Other downsides now is that your ships suddenly has an "optimal reactor limit" that wasn't there befor and with that suddenly some builds on some ships are no longer viable. Of cause for any critism "there are modules to solve X that are planned". To handle the reactor overheating 2 modules got seeded ... both are near useless except for epic/legendary quality.
The idea is fantastic, but the devs have a major rule - if you're not a combat player, you are very specifically NOT allowed to have fun. Want to do base building? Constantly every few minutes getting harassed by an invading fleet even in "safe zones". Even if you pay them off, they STILL send the fleet in to wipe out you're entire base. You MUST be a combat role or you won't be able to get anything else done. A constant onslaught of "pay else a lot of credits or we attack" every few minutes, and there is a chance they take the money and still send a massive fleet. Even at a low level, their fleets are so large, they are destroying NPC space stations with ease. A hard pass on this one unless you only want to fly around and blow things up.
Have played star valor for almost 2 years now - despite the struggles with several issues - but this latest update with overheating reactors that are using a mere 25% cap is rediculous, and quite frankly the final straw. I literally want a refund
This is the only game where I have unlocked all the achievements because it was fun, they provide in-game benefits, and you can choose up to 5 of them for a new run. The amount of customization in all areas of the game is amazing! For me, it's the best game in its genre. The developer listens to and cooperates with players to add and improve gameplay. That's rare! I can't believe what some people are saying to the dev for making some of the changes while he's actively adjusting them! And it only took one day to fix the somewhat punishing overheat mechanic! Not fast enough for drama queens, apparently. Don't punish the developer for exploring new gameplay options. The game was fun a long time ago; that's why so many of us have hundreds of hours in it, but it's still being improved. Drama queens: If, after hundreds of hours, you can't say anything nice about the game, at least be patient. You don't encourage an already cooperative developer with a negative review; you are hurting the game's sales and, therefore, future improvements!
I love this game, bought it in early access and have come back to it for every update. You can chill and avoid combat with mining and trading, you can go full combat and engage several enemies, you can go it solo or with a fleet of companion ships. There is a story chain set of missions that explain the lore of the game which is optional but yet still it is a sandbox where you are not forced to do any of those things or you chose to do them all at once. I have not reviewed it in the past due to laziness on my part but with the current slew of review bombs regarding the new reactor heat mechanic I felt the need to defend the developer who has since patched the mechanic twice to accommodate their complainants. If you enjoy top down space games like Starsector, Star Vortex, Reality Break or any in slew of these type of games, Star Valor is worth your money and your time as it is just different enough to give it its own flavor.
I don't think "the juice is worth the squeeze" with this game. After completing a few basic quests in the starting system, venturing beyond can be very taxing. I kept dying and got stuck progress wise. I was curious so I threw on some cheats to see what the big ships would be like... super stoked to see what this fleet thing was all about, like in the trailer. OMG, these larger ships are just stupidly slow space slugs, good luck just turning. Sooo glad I didn't waste my time trying to grind for these things. With that being said, time is precious, so if the creators aren't going to supply kick-ass ships worth my time, I won't be playing or recommending this title. Just disappointed that I wasn't able to refund this in time.
The game starts off really fun and addicting, but then the games whole purpose becomes fighting off enemies that warp in every five minutes. You can't really play the game that much cause the enemies warping in become the only thing you can focus on. I understand the "you will more often attract more powerful enemies" ,but does it have to be every system every five minutes. They're not even the hardest to kill, but just become so annoying I stop playing.
After 110 hrs what can i say? This is my favourite game of this type on steam!!!! Old school, top down space RPG. No one does it better....buy it now ! thank me later ! What a wonderful game, it just makes me happy lol
Jogo da hora demais!! E ainda dev solo brasileiro! Poderia fazer uma analogia ao Stardew Valley e seu dev solo. Simplesmente magnifico. Parabens pelo trabalho. E sim a comunidade almeja mais conteudo, porem o jogo esta bom demais!
