TR-49

A dizzying investigation through highlights of and commentary upon metaphysical texts and pulp sci-fi novels, TR-49 gives just enough breadcrumbs for you to put the story together yourself, with inductive leaps and a little math. Whenever I got stuck, I looked at the extensive in-game notes listing authors, texts, and file codes and I found at least one more thread to pull on... right up until the end when I felt suddenly very stupid. Metaphysics! The mysterious current-day that your POV character finds herself in isn't really examined, but it also ends up not being important. There is an old radio through which you can communicate with unseen characters (you only choose to speak or to ignore, there are no dialogue options) and this dialogue is written and performed well enough but the meat of the story is in the past, with interweaving threads covering a century of memorable characters almost none of whom you will ever get to meet and most are long dead but still there is drama in their lives and their secrets. The interface - this 50s-esque computer with a round display, levers and a split-flap display - is simple enough once you know what you're doing. A touch of friction kept me from mindlessly clicking letters and numbers but I could still search through ten or twenty possible results without much frustration. I found TR-49 a neat game of deduction and mystery, reminiscent of Obra Dinn or Her Story, and well worth the price!

Short and sweet game. Loved the premise and mechanics. Pretty straightforward, but does make you think through a puzzle and consult the automatically-written notes now and again.

This is a fantastic puzzle game. I've been hooked from start to finish.
