This copy was given by the dev* A short psychological game about your self-worth and not being satisfied with who you are, looking in a mirror but "objectively seeing a nobody", or at least that is what I got from it reading in between the poetry - about 30 minutes long with a few optional achievements. I will say this type of narrative is probably the most overused in psychological gaming, and while I think you successfully got your story across, I think it's a good idea to add more depth to stay away from similar games, I actually have seen the actor stage metaphor in a few other games so it lessened the impact for me. Even though the voice acting had a homebrew quality, I still think the mood works relatively well here, maybe the constant changes in your voice slightly affected the tone, but I still think the message felt genuine. I just wish it was a little less forceful, you would get a better result if you paced your thoughts slower and with more introspective in between. Pretty much as soon as you start any chapter there are very few moments to reflect on what is being told, so you kinda get bombarded with a plot, I think you could space out the narrative a bit more. I assume you are not an English speaker, I only nitpick voice acting in mid-size games because if you don't have access to professionals, it's okay to work with what you got. I was a bit worried that the game would be a little too dark with the visuals, it's a sign of lack of experience when you try to hide detail, but whatever filters you used to make those liquid-like shadows gave it just enough depth so it doesn't look like plain colors. I still think you could focus a bit more on contrast, I think the light in the bar area looks much better, you can keep the texture the way it is, just contrast the light sources a bit more so there is depth to the shading, I think it will look better. The choice for locations was not too interesting but it worked decently within the narrative, you could try to add a bit more optional exploration next time.
Pros:
(+) While the voice acting could have been better if you found someone with more experience, I still think you got the story across well enough, even with all of the heavy metaphors there is a sense of despair coming from the "character", and I actually can think of a few people who think exactly like that, myself included, so it's a relatable concept. (+) The choice of locations and psychological effects worked decently to complement the narrative, it wasn't like over-the-top crazy like many games can be, but sometimes keeping it simple can work as well, and I think the simplicity was the right choice.
Feedback:
Just a few random thoughts: - I think you could contrast the shadows a bit more, having more lighted areas in the darker parts, I think the bar room looks more appropriate than some of the other zones. The way I think about it, people who use darkness too much hide the lack of detail (more often than not), so I want to see you focus more on the texture and lights, it will look better, I think. This type of narrative has been more or less explored in similar games, I personally would like a bit more depth, not much, but maybe add another angle to it. If you would add a bit more optional exploration that would always help. I will forgive the voice acting because of the scope of this game, but would it help if you got someone with more experience, probably. I think you could also pace your segments with a few slower moments, it's kinda like 'go go go' it feels, a bit forceful. Overall Thoughts: 7/10 Relatively small experience at 30 minutes, but I think you got your message across to me, with a few small bumps. I have played a few games that were similar so in that sense I wasn't too interested in the story, I would have preferred something a bit more original, but aside from issues with voice acting, I think you handled the mood and locations relatively well.
I liked it more than the author loved his mustache (I absolutely adored it)
In many ways, this concept blurs the boundaries of the form of a game, an interactive slam, or perhaps an introspective exhibition of a mind. It's quite a unique experience that defies easy categorization. The narrator's accent added an extra layer of charm to the experience, and the background music worked in harmony and, for me, elevated the game, truly enhancing my enjoyment and immersion. Sometimes it can be confusing, just like dreams and our own minds can be.
The highlights of this experience in a few points:

Lovely, haunting music and narration.
Excellent posters (truly loved the inspiration from Polish film posters) and trophies that tied the whole story together.
Visuals, including both liminal spaces and the post-Soviet vibe.
Mustache gate (it deserved its own bullet point). Lovely construction as per the adhesive used.
Finally - The story that made me emotional (I'm not a man so I can express it with confidence). There's a lot of "love" in this review, but this is not a review about love. If I had a mustache, I could tweak it while writing this review, but I can't - with this tone I started, and that's how I’ll finish.
i have no idea what is going on and why this loud man is talking into my ear but it was cool
Krótkie, ale ciekawe doświadczenie. Psychodeliczny klimat i teksty skłaniające do refleksji, w tle nastrojowa muzyka. Rozgrywka to głównie chodzenie i wybieranie kolejnych wersów opowieści, prowadzących do różnych nowych lokacji. Warto zagrać.
Haunting and generous in interpretation, Tonight, I Die in My Sleep is a playable poem, more than anything. It takes the interactor through the palace of memories of a delirious, defeated, destitute actor, who is mired in self-pity and in dire need of love and confidence. Evocative, but curiously nondescript scenes serve as backdrops to a deep dive into the complex web of self-defence, self-reflection and transcendence. A morose, musing, and memorably Polish voice serves as our Virgil on this journey, voicing the conscious and unconscious mechanisms that allow our protagonist to survive in a hell he made for himself. Is redemption possible? The poem you arrange as you make choices will light the way.
It was one hell of a poetic ride ! Even though it's a short game, it was like reading an actor's autobiography. It's more a "game" of instropection and what it is like being an actor with self-worth problems and a need of love. I think the voice acting was good and I find it interesting to listen to ! Plus it has a nice accent. I like how the narrator guides our way and explain the story with poetic metaphors. And I also like
how the choices can make a lovely poem at the end
. I felt that there was work and passion behind it, that the dev wanted to tell us a story while sending a message. In my case, it did make through it ! If you like the poetic type genre of a game, then it might interest you ! It's worth the price and I wouldn't mind seeing future games from the dev !
A short and linear experience where you walk through locations and listen to the story. Because you're being moved from one situation to the next, the presentation is rather surreal. This usually occurs when you interact with the major object in your room and make a decision on the story. However, choices and order of clicking on things aren't all that important. You might hear different words, but the outcome is already known. There are no logical riddles or challenging game mechanics. The main objects are the only ones with which you can interact. Everything else can be examined by simply moving close to something interesting. This brings up a few words on the screen as well as a voice that is always with you. I'm still unsure whether this is a narrator explaining your life or simply a voice in your head. Graphics are purposefully made to appear grainy, as they were before the introduction of graphic cards. You will recognize objects, but don't expect much detail. The voice following you around has an accent, which makes it incredibly distinct. Subtitles are thankfully provided, as many of the words would be difficult to understand without them.
i could not tell you what the ♥♥♥♥ is going on at all not one line of dialogue in this is comprehensible. 1/5 stars, the 1 is because the voice reminded me of stinga flim and i like garten of ban ban
Here to bring the review number to 10. Also here, to state... I found it more compelling than I was led to believe by outside impressions. I found that it can stand tall amongst the greats of the genre.
