And so begins a grand epic of intertwining destinies; a tale of God, of angels, demons and humans living amongst the walls of the floating purgatory, Tokyo Babel -- a soaring bastion erected in the image of Tokyo, one of the largest cities of a world succumbed to the apocalypse.

If you like anime fight scenes that are 85% internal analysis and 15% actual movement, then you'll like this visual novel. Purgatory is a Japanese high school. There's angels in thigh high socks and demons wearing seifuku. God is a mad robot and men fight using the crystallised essences of their own hearts. This thing is wild. It takes itself a bit too seriously for my liking, but it's a high quality visual novel with good art and great effects. There are a ridiculous number of fight scenes, and it's all relatively well-written. Overall the outrageous, over-the-top action overbalanced a lot of the emotional impact though. Any chance I was going to cry at any of the sad endings went out the window when I witnessed the main character chucking honest-to-god bunker busters in the final fight on one of the routes. It was a fun ride, but I'm glad it's over now so my brain can rest.
Very cool chuuni vibes with a great cast of characters. The OST can get a bit repetitive, it has some okay tracks, but nothing really stands out. The story asks some great questions and resolves them properly. I cant help but think the game had a pretty low budget - the art style isnt the greatest (especially when it comes to sprites), though it definitely has a certain charm to it. Overall, its not quite on the level of Dies irae, but its still a very good experience.
Damn, what sad endings, but that is why I love this game. Highly Recommend This VN 10/10
One of the worse visual novels I've played recently. It was compelling enough that I was able to get to the end of a route, but the tonal dissonance between the humor and life and death drama was handled poorly. In addition, the aesthetics were pretty boring for what was supposed to be a story about angels and demons. If I wanted a VN about characters dressed in high school uniforms, there are plenty of those to pick from. Overall, it felt like a weird blend of SMT with Fate/stay night, but the VN combat was much less interesting than Fate and the pacing was bad. The situation was similar to an SMT game, but it lacked the good gameplay and meaningful player agency of that series. In addition, the enemies designs were significantly more boring than in SMT, and numerous characters were introduced then killed off without any meaningful effect on the plot such that they felt rather wasted, at least within the route I played. In addition, I reached a bad ending for the sin of choosing to comfort the route heroine during an existential crisis rather than be cruel to her. I don't find this acceptable. The best thing I can say about the VN is that I like the protagonist a lot. Sadly, I don't feel the rest of it really lived up to his potential.
I swear I tried but no, just no. It tries too hard to be something that it is not. I don't see how people compare this to Fate. I mean, other than the fighting there is really nothing similar. we got our stereotyped silent edgy op boy, religious symbologies put just because they think it makes it cool, I guess. Too much, way too much, fan service. There is so much that it always happen to break the pace. It always goes "fan service, epic fight, slice of life, fan service, fight" and so on and the fights that they want to look cool, just lose that interest that they could have given instead. So, while the visual novel is really well made, with good animated visual effects and voice actors in it, its story is just not that good nor interesting. You like some fighting in your fan service, or you don't care too much about it? Then you may like it But if you already had your share of visual novels and you got here because of the Fate comparisons, I don't think you will like it, unless this it's your favourite genre.
Visual novels offer a unique blend of storytelling and style, separate from typical games. Even so, the titles I review shine on their own, delivering memorable experiences for specific people!
