Reviews
After completing the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy (2001 – 2004) for the Nintendo DS, game director and designer Shu Takumi took a break from his signature series and made Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (2010). This title – also originally made for the DS – may not be as renowned as Ace Attorney, but it deserves your attention, especially now that it got a well-deserved HD remaster on the PC. The first aspect of Ghost Trick that would grab a passerby’s attention is likely the art design. The game is colourful, populated with characters drawn in sharp lines that can be easily identified by their silhouettes and movements. The visual expressiveness of the character design enhances major characters’ development that spans a good chunk of the 10-hour-plus game. Ghost Trick isn’t all style and no substance, thankfully. The game’s layered mystery story is highly enjoyable and gripping. Although there are several twists and turns as secrets are unravelled and backstories are elaborated upon, the story stays cohesive. Sprinkled with a good dash of humour and hints of noir, I often found myself wanting to play one more chapter upon completing one. Like the Phoenix Wright games, Ghost Trick has its own zany, supernatural logic, which is carefully explained and elaborated upon as needed at various points of the game. As long as you suspend your disbelief, Ghost Trick’s game mechanics and supernatural world would make sense. While I struggled with the courtroom logic in the Phoenix Wright trilogy at times, I had no problem in understanding how powers work in Ghost Trick. A few puzzles require some trial and error and extra thought, but I wouldn’t say they are impossible. With the premise of time loops built into the story, and it being part of the core gameplay, mistakes can be corrected by turning back time, making it fun to experiment with your powers. Effecting different changes to scenarios, and stumbling upon surprising outcomes are certainly part of the fun. This game was certainly designed to be played optimally on a touchscreen. Playing with a game controller or keyboard is fine, but it lacks a certain smoothness that would have made the game even better. It’s not a dealbreaker, and it shouldn’t deter you from playing the game, but it’s obvious enough to be mentioned here. Ghost Trick feels like an overlooked gem, overshadowed by the popular Ace Attorney series, despite it being a Shu Takumi game. Because of that, given how much I’ve enjoyed this game, I really want to attract more people to it through this review. I’m certainly part of the fanbase that hopes for an Ace Attorney x Ghost Trick crossover – not only because we want more Ghost Trick games, but also give this game the spotlight it deserves.
