Tick's Tales is an adventure game inspired by the golden years of the genre (King's Quest especially). Story: You play as Tick, he's the village troublemaker, but all he wants to be is the hero and win over the heart of his crush Georgia McGorgeous and you need to do this is complete the tests of a true hero and get the sword of blergh all while fighting a looming threat in Bloodclot. The story of Tick's Tale is comedic and honestly quite charming. It pokes fun at the adventure genre and there's quite a few good jokes, but a good majority just end up being total misses. It's overall not very story heavy, but what's here is a pretty charming and will please fans of the genre. Graphics: Tick's Tale of course goes for the sort of pixelated look which was common in the genre and it nails that aspect well. I think everything looks great. It's honestly really fun to walk around and look around the environments like houses in your village, the surrounding areas and such. Albeit one of my nitpicks with the game is the character designs which are just mediocre at best, so I wish there could have been some effort put into those. Audio: I get that the music of the game also is going to be inspired by the classics, but honestly a good majority of the soundtrack is just absolute trash in my opinion. The music really sounds like it was taken out of a platforming game instead of being made for a point and click adventure game. There are a few nice chill songs when night rolls around, but during the day it just sounds way too upbeat and becomes sort of distracting which is disappointing. Everything like sound effects are nothing incredibly special, but do their job well. Gameplay: Tick's Tale is of course a point and click adventure game and the main goal is to solve puzzles to become the hero of the land. You collect items and bring them somewhere else, but also speak with people to solve puzzles. So let's talk further about the puzzles. It's of course inspired by the classics like King's Quests and the puzzles really reflect on that. A good majority of the puzzles are rather nonsensical. There was quite a few puzzles where I was stumped to the point where I broke down and looked up a walkthrough since I simply could not figure out how to progress. But honestly that's just a few puzzles and the rest are rather well designed and really fun to solve. The exploration itself is fun, but honestly there's a very minimal amount of locations you can visit and you will mostly go through the same five or so locations over and over until the game is over and since the game is short, it's rather disappointing. If you're a seasoned vet of the genre I expect it to take you under 2 hours to finish, but even for those who aren't major fans it won't take you longer than 3 hours to finish. Verdict: Tick's Tale is a great little throwback to the classics of the point and click adventure genre. It's funny, charming and fun to play, however when the issues rear their head, they end up being real ugly. I will say that it's worth checking this game out, but only if you're a fan of the genre. Final Rating: 7/10 Pros: + Charming story + Some decent puzzles + Great art style Cons: - Insanely short - Music is not that good - A few really non logical puzzles If you liked this review please consider following our groups and curator pages at https://steamcommunity.com/groups/completingthebacklog and https://steamcommunity.com/groups/ImperialReviews
This is one of the few games I'm on the fence about...On the one hand, I don't believe it deserves a thumbs down, but on the other hand I don't quite know if I'd recommend the game. The game itself had no bugs. I love pixel graphics as well and the music/sound wasn't all that terrible. The story was a bit lacking in my honest opinion. It wasn't the worst I've seen in a game, given, but it also wasn't anything great (and I like weird stories in games too!) and seemed to have been kind of rushed or something. The game itself is extremely short for a point and click, so there's not really much to do in the game. So for as far as the game goes, I'd give it a tentative recommendation since it's a quick point and click and not all that hard or great. However, my biggest faults with the game is how the game codes its save files. Now, a regular person may not even have much issue with this unless they want to replay the game in the future. For achievement hunting, however, the game is a bit of a pain if you miss anything. The chapter select doesn't seem to work properly (in my first run of the game, I only saw from part 3 and onwards). There is no in-game button/option to start a new game and you cannot delete the autosave file at all (while you can delete any other saves you make yourself). I had to jump on a different computer to even start a new game (this can also be done via VM if you don't have access to another computer). So this struggle tainted my view on the game a bit. So, overall, would I recommend it? Maybe. If you're focus is on just playing the game, note that it's a short game and not the best of stories. If you're an achievement hunter, make sure you follow the guide exactly just in case your chapter select doesn't work or you make a ton of saves during your play.
Tick's Tales is a retro style, pixel graphic, point & click adventure game. You play as tick a young boy with a crush whom he wishes to impress. In order to do that he's got to become a knight. The game tries to be funny but usually comes of as more cheesy but it plays off that and seems to be purposely cheesy... like naming the romantic interest "Georgia McGorgeous." It also breaks the fourth wall, acknowledging itself as a game in several places. It makes references to various games and movies/books/characters for example, naming the wizard Gandarf (likely in reference to Gandalf from 'The Lord of the Rings'). The humor is okay but nothing really funny or memorable just more cutesy. The visuals are fine considering it's specifically trying to be a retro-style pixel graphic game. If you are looking for the latest graphics this will definitely disappoint you but as long as you are expecting pixel graphics you won't. Some of the scenes are better drawn than others. Most items you need to interact with are easily noticeable but some of them require some pixel hunting. There is no hotspot display that shows a word or highlights an item that can be interacted with. It's not bad as it's a pretty small world but a couple things are frustrating to figure out/find (I'm thinking of you "protein grass"). There's only a few screens (I think 10 total) and not all of them are available at the same time so it's not a lot of places to have to search and click through. The interface is extremely simplistic. Everything is right on the screen, there's no menus to open except your backpack. You only have a pointer that lets you interact with your environment. You can't switch between look, walk, talk, etc... it will only react to hotspots in whatever predefined way that spot acts when clicked. There are no click through abilities so when the animations or dialogues are going you must wait till they finish. This can feel especially irritating when for example you enter the wizards shop and have to wait for him to finish his chemistry experiment each time or when you are done reading but the text is still there on the screen. The game takes about 3 hours to play through at $8, that's about $2.67/hour of gameplay. That's a little high for my taste but if you can get the game on sale it would make it a better rate. Overall, it was a reasonably fun play but nothing very memorable with mediocre storytelling and characters. If you have 3 hours to kill, this is probably a good option assuming you like this type of game.
Great little game. Not all the puzzles are logical, but they're surely enjoyable. Really loved the characters and the dialogues. The addition of voice acting would be great, but it doesn't really matter, since the game is great and quite cheap. Great job! Till next time, don't forget to point & click!

A szkoda.
Pixel-art adventure game, that doesn't take itself too seriously. Not quite a "Monkey Island", but those are some pretty big footsteps to step into. Nonetheless, had some good laughs while playing. I've completed it in 2 hours, for 100% achievements I consulted a guide. Well-spent money for a well-spent time. Recommended, if you don't have issues with the art style in general.
Update 23-06-13 - Achiement Hunters and completionists beware! I have to withdraw my recommendation, originally written on 18-09-11. I have given it some thought, and I have waited a while before deciding to do so. It would appear that ca. 2,5 years ago, 2 additional achievements were added to this game. Which in itself isn't a problem per se; though adding them some 5 or 6 years after releasing the game does seem an... odd choice. And not exactly nice for people who completed the game many years ago and possibly don't have the saves anymore, having to restart to get them. But here's the thing: these achievements cannot currently be gotten, even if you did have an old save or restarted. Anyone who currently has them would appear to have used SAM or a similar mechanism. Not that I blame them, as someone who prefers finishing games before starting new ones, the "previously completed" status of this game is REALLY annoying to me. I have half a mind to do so myself. Just not sure whether I'm more stubborn about wanting my 100% back or wanting to especially not get them now. It can be finished in a relatively short time if you know what you're doing, but even if you have no idea what to do next, there are a bunch of crazy things to try out (to your amusement and sometimes Tick's dismay).
Tick's Tales is a very classic point-and-click adventure game. The story itself uses enough clichés to last a lifetime, although it never really became clear to me whether we were all having a meta laugh at the expense of the genre, or whether it's not that deep or self-aware. Same goes for the adventure: some of the solutions were very "think-outside-the-box", but it's unclear to me whether this was done on purpose to mock the genre or not. All in all, the game's good for some laughs but nothing revolutionary, and once again makes me wish Steam had a "meh"-button for reviews. It's also pretty short. Works well on Linux (ubuntu 16.04).
A fun pixel graphic point & click game about an aspiring knight. The story is well told, filled with humor and lots of modern cultural references. I definitely recommend if you like this genre.
