I almost didn't buy this after reading a review about poor translation, but ended up picking it up anyway. Turns out the translation is totally fine. The way the characters speak is normal of the time period the game is set in. Just thought I'd let anyone thinking about buying it know.
This game suffers from a poor translation from Russian into English, so much so, that it removes the reader from an immersive experience. The MC may be an English woman, but due to all the incorrect grammar and phrasing, she sounds like a Russian woman trying to speak English. The same goes for most of the characters, due to the horrible translation. The story itself is so familiar, that it feels like it was loosely based upon the Mummy movie franchise (the ones with Brendan Frasier and not Tom Cruise), and many of the characters seem like a imitiation of those found in the movies. The story is rushed, so there is not much character growth or buildup with the available romances. The one saving grace of this game is the great artwork, though the multiple endings and number of available Steam achievments are a plus as well. All and all, I cannot recommend this game unless you are simply looking for a quick and easy way to earn achievements and/or trading cards, or you are interested mainly in the artwork and CGs.
"May the Gods always stand between you and harm in all the empty places you must walk"- Captain John Sheridan quoting an ancient Egyptian blessing, from Babylon 5 This is the first of salamandra88's visual novels that I have played - and if all their games are as well-woven and interesting as this one, I think I'll become a fast track fan in the near future. Even though there are not enough romance options for a well-equipped otome; story wise, this one here is one of the most engaging ones that I've ever played, since it doesn't highlight romance primarily; but presents it as flavor to an exciting supernatural adventure. It's 1914, Cairo. Margaret Dawson - the daughter of esteemed archeologist Richard Dawson, and an aspiring archeologist/trained linguist herself - is accompanying her father in an expedition to a recently discovered mastaba, an ancient Egyptian Tomb that belonged to a forgotten pharaoh. This journey means worlds to Margo, since the end of it will spell doom for her future: she is to be married off to another nobleman whom she knows nothing about, as means of paying her brother's dept upon her return to England. Being the spirited young woman she is though, Margo has quite a lot to say about that! In the meanwhile, the expedition reveals the grounds of an ancient legend concerning two brothers, a murder, a pact for endless war and time travel! As the seemingly harmless scientific dig turns to become a supernatural event which threatens to end the world as we know, will Margo manage to find a way out? First and foremost, I am glad that this is one of those rare otomes that the plot is the center of attention rather than romance. Romance develops as a side effect of human interaction, if you chose for it to do - as it should be. Thus, it feels somewhat natural, or at least explicable within the story. The main character adds up to the immersion quite successfully too. Margaret is a smart young woman with family issue. Her probable romance with all three options are justifiable via shared experience, rather than a flighty romance worthy of harlequin novels. Her vision and reasoning serve to be the driving force of most events, and concerning various parameters dominating her life and point of view, the game has many, many different endings. Your relationship with your father, your relationship with various romances, your resolve and your logic: they all are parameters in determining an ending. Cause-consequence dynamic in this game is noteworthy. As a rare event that we encounter in otome games, you can actually have a romance with the villain! Interesting flavor, huh? About display... The artwork is more than appealing, bearing the notes of traditional European art style, rather than anime art that mostly dominates the market nowadays. Gosh, we need more otome & visual novels with traditional artwork. The music also is alluring, adding to the atmosphere of romanticized orientalism of 1890-1900s middle east. Game engine is classic Ren'Py with some tweaks, so not much to tell about that part. First playthrough will take 2-3 hours of your time depending on your reading rate, and then you are free to skip all previously read narrative to look for different endings. Enjoy, people! Finally having finished These nights in Cairo after having heard great things about this visual novel, I found it was a pleasant experience overall. Although I was a bit disappointed that this game ended up a lot shorter than I thought it would be, I have to say I had a good time with the game and couldn’t stop playing until the credits finally rolled. The story follows Margaret Dawson who is traveling to Egypt with her father. Together, they are trying to solve the mysteries in the excavation of a tomb, although it is clear very soon that the director of the museums seems to be hiding something. Shortly afterward, Margaret notices something is very wrong and the director might be more dangerous than he lets on at first. Together with her father and friends, she is trying to save the world. At first, I was quite worried about its theme as I am not really familiar with archeology but luckily, These nights in Cairo doesn’t go too much into detail with it and does not require any knowledge about it before at all. That said, everything was explained very well and I always knew what was going on, although the romance and mystery took a bigger part into the game later on. I have to admit, while Margaret was an admirable strong main character, I slightly got annoyed at the depressing parts of the game. Now, I get that some people have bad pasts and various concerns, yet in some routes, it seemed like she was only seeing the bad things in life and everything else didn’t matter to her anymore. Sadly, since These nights in Cairo is quite short, the pace was suffering a lot because of it. While the romance is undoubtedly very sweet and the story was pretty decent as well, there was too less time for it to properly unfold. I felt that this game was kind of rushed at times and story parts were happening so fast that I didn’t have enough time to digest it and another development was already happening. With that said, I wish These nights in Cairo would have gotten more time to be able to display its romance and storytelling. A thing which is absolutely unique about These nights in Cairo is that there is the option to romance the villain. Although I can’t quite sympathize with him, I can kind of understand why Margaret did. I would like to mention that this route might not be everyone’s cup of tea as he is far from your average sweet and nice guy. Having played These nights in Cairo, I noticed that in a lot of the routes only a few scenes were altered a little bit and are almost the same, especially the non-romance routes. Even the yuri scene is kept very short and only contains a single scene. This might be very misleading as it seems like you are able to actually romance the priestess while it is hardly a romance route. While These nights in Cairo contains erotic scenes, it doesn’t take up a big part in the game and is not present on all routes. It is to keep in mind that these scenes are very subtle and is definitely not a big focus in the game. I immediately noticed that the artwork is simply stunning in These nights in Cairo. I found the CGs very beautiful and in the end, I am impressed with the quality of the game. Although it does not offer voice acting nor animations, it still stands out in its gorgeous style. The soundtracks were very fitting with its theme and pleasant to listen to. In the end, while I had my issues with These nights in Cairo, it was a lovely game overall. The only thing I found very disappointing is that These nights in Cairo had an interesting premise of romance added with an actual plot but sadly didn’t have enough time to unfold it. Due to the short playing time, the pace felt very rushed at times and the character development was suffering as well as a result. Regardless, These nights in Cairo offers plenty of sweet scenes, and a decent plot with beautiful artwork and I can easily recommend this visual novel to anyone who is into otome games. Played Character Route Order: Amin ◈ Ramessu ◈ Duncan These Nights in Cairo is a must-have if you are looking for a high quality Otome in the low budget section that aims for adult audience. Three romanceable guys are just waiting to conquer your heart, including the villain who is, by the way, freakin' hot! I love and adore Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII to bits and Ramessu's character design really reminds me of him in some way. He could be his Egyptian half-brother, right? You can also choose to side with the villain and that's definitely a chance you don't get very often Visual Novels, even less in Otome. With Duncan as the friendly Casanova and Amin being the kind-hearted, mysterious stranger, you'll have three completely different personalities to choose from. There is also an opportunity to experience a spicy Yuri Scene with a gorgeous woman. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1733541501 Our main character Margaret is a self-confident, strong, smart, and sassy woman, thus she represents a strong contrast to most other main characters in Otome. She is very passionate about archaeology and dreams of becoming an archaeologist one day, just like her father Richard Dawson. She knows well how to fight back with words and the cat will hardly catch her tongue. Needless to say that she also looks absolutely stunning. Margaret's character design is very easy on the eyes if I may say so. The story takes place in the year 1914 and is located in -surprise- Egypt. The plot focuses on archaeology, but also on Margaret's struggle to be on good terms with her father, which is not an easy task since he simply refuses to acknowledge her effort, as well as her affinity for archaeology. She already accomplished becoming quite the talented egyptologist after hard years of studying. You would probably assume that this alone makes her father think that she is predestined for this profession, but to Margaret's dismay, he has other plans for her. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1737681102 I must admit, Margaret's father made it very easy for me to dislike him, and that didn't change throughout the whole game. Richard basically wants to force his daughter to marry a man she obviously dislikes for the sake of her talentless and irresponsible brother Gregory who has nothing better to do than selfishly spending money that he doesn't possess in bars and on women. Richard seems to believe that it is fair that Margaret has to pay the price for her brother's immature actions and his debts. I suppose you understand now why I'm not very fond of her father. The non-romance route and all three character routes are consistently good. These Nights in Cairo is with around seven hours completion time rather short, but it doesn't fail that both, the affection and the relationship of Margaret and her chosen bae, develop comprehensibly. Many moments will make your heart beating faster. Erotic situations are executed in a very mature, aesthetic, and sensual way. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1216137795 The writing is decent, both in terms of content and spelling, which allows fluent reading. Don't even let me get started to talk about the gorgeous artwork and the premise that are just as beautiful as the many CG's you are going to see while playing. If you are aiming for an Otome that is able to meet the expectations of an adult and convinces with quality despite its low price, then you are definitely going to enjoy These Nights in Cairo.

𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐎𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐤𝐚𝐢'𝐬 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐑𝐏𝐆 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬

I had quite a bit of fun playing this game despite my reservations. The story is interesting enough, although I do feel it's rather short, and sometimes the routes can feel a little rushed. However, that being said they do wrap up nicely at the end, so it didn't bother me too much. One thing I did like was that you can actually make the MC quite blunt with her father, and it's nice to see she's not a complete pushover. The art is pretty and colourful, and the sprites are nicely done, the MC and Priestess are so pretty! I'm hoping that the trading cards will unlock soon, looking forward to seeing the badges and backgrounds etc. The music is so-so, I didn't mind it but it can get a little repetitive, but if it bothers you then I guess you can just turn it off, so not really an issue. As for the characters, well, they aren't bad either. There's the usual types included; flirty, protector, and the bad guy, as well as a bonus encounter with a certain Priestess. I would've liked to have seen their stories fleshed out a little more, but what I did read was still worth it. I'd say this VN would take around 4-5 hours to complete, maybe less if you read quickly. I guess this review feels a little neutral, but that's how I feel. Aside from being pretty with decent artwork and a somewhat entertaining storyline, I feel there could've been more added to it. Still this is definitely worth picking up when on sale!
This was a fun little adventure, kind of like The Mummy! A couple of warnings though, it's a bit short (took me around 5 hours to finish all the routes) and the English translation can be pretty rough in spots (though you can always understand what is being said). The routes felt very well developed, though the romance aspects felt a bit rushed. Even the though the translation wasn't great, the writing itself was actually pretty good. Overall, I would recommend for visual novel fans, as long as you know what you're getting. Hopefully in the future they can get the English version the polish that it needs, because then the game would be fantastic!
These Nights In Cairo is an adventure romance visual novel developed by salamandra88 and published by 7DOTS. Set in the early 19th century, you take on the role of Margaret Dawson, a burgeoning archaeologist who recently departed from London with her father who is also an accomplished archaeologist in his own right. The duo make their way to Egypt where they are to excavate a mysterious new tomb recently uncovered in the vast desert of the Sahara. What will they unearth? Is it dangerous? Why are people trying to kill us? You'll try to determine the answer to these questions and many more as the intriguing story unfolds. Prepare to go on an amazing thrill ride of an adventure in this fantastic visual novel experience.
PRESENTATION
This is the second visual novel that I've read from salamandra88 and I must say that the presentation here is just as fantastic as the previous title "Never Give Up" was which I absolutely adored. Firstoff, the illustrations are gorgeous and laden with beautiful colors, impressive shading and terrific effects. The characters don't blink their eyes or move their mouths but their facial expressions change depending on the mood of the dialogue which serves to help immersion as you read. Speaking of immersion there are also a number of ambient sound effects such as various noises in the background, etc. that really enhance the atmosphere of the title as the story progresses. Additionally, there are many choices in the dialogue that you will have to make which could affect not only current events but the ending of the title as well. Along the way, you'll meet alot of very interesting, appealing and hated characters and find yourself in some unforgettable and action packed situations throughout the course of the compelling narrative. In short, These Nights In Cairo manages to hit all the positive points presentation-wise of a solid visual novel.
CONCLUSION
Salamandra88 continues to deliver another fascinating visual novel experience with this wonderful title which I completely enjoyed from start to finish. The story is extemely captivating, the artwork superb and the music is quite enjoyable as well. I don't typically read otome but if they deliver stories like this one then I'll have to add many more of them to my visual novel library. As far as options go, there are a great many Steam Achievements to hunt down and Steam Trading Cards to collect. The novel itself has the basic settings for sound/music volume and text speed. There is also a C.G. gallery that unlocks as the story progresses and a music mode for the excellent middle-eastern inspired soundtrack. In conclusion, if you're looking to go on a grand adventure filled with intrigue, mystery and possible romance then These Nights In Cairo is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED read for any fan of the visual novel genre.
This is okay I guess, not totally awful but i don't think storywise it lives to the potential it had; it's just too short for that and fanservice (the 1+ part) kinda (annoyingly) overwhelms the story for me. Personally, I didn't enjoy this much. my idea of good otome, good story and good romance is way WAY different from what the likes of this game serve. Character concepts were appealing but the storytelling/ writing quality was a painful experience for me all in all. too faservice and innuendo oriented - it ruined the reading exerience for me and broke my immersion. The innuendo felt inserted in too many places and thus felt somewhat forced, didn't always feel like a welcome part of the story... and the story was not deep enough to make up for it and engage me; it felt unbalanced in favour of plain fanservice talk, I really didn't like that. Out of all this fanservice mess, I liked Amin best but the route still didn't do this character concept enough justice because of the writing. Meaningful character depth and involved writing are completely lacking in this game.. Ram' s character had most complexity, if there is any in this game, then it is his route - but in the sort of way comic book villain might, he also could have been a little more interesting, a little more complex writing is required for this, though. The game is simply on the bland side in terms of writing and acomplishes nothing that would stay with me for a longer time. there are parts that feel abrupt and i think the game is a little short hence why it is not as satisfying as it could be - feels like it could be so much more tan what it is. And the hell/damn/ other swearwords every second line are annoying., they ruined my connection with an otherwise ok mc. She doesn't need to use so many swear words to be "sassy". she can be sassy and classy at the same time, but, again writing fails her big time. Shame, the game had more potential than it turned out to be. Nice art and lovely music though. I recommened it to people who do like sexual content in their games and stories on the simple, short side with a focus on just guys, basically it's not very long. I wish for and seek something else but Amin was a nice and welcome character concept..i just wished the story was something else, something more.
overall good. can recommend it.
