Constracktion has potential, but it’s buried under clunky controls, no track planning, and AI trains that spawn instantly and block your progress. Without proper signaling, the tracks quickly turn into a traffic jam. It feels more like an early access tech demo than a finished game — which would be fine if it actually was early access, but it’s being sold as complete.
If this were early access it would be one thing, but for a full release it just has too many issues. The UI is not intuitive at all, it is clunky and difficult to work with with a keyboard and mouse. It feels like it was designed for a console controller but with no streamlining whatsoever for any other system. Critical information needed to smoothly connect the tracks to the industries (such as the elevation of the industry track) is difficult to find at best and you are not told how to find this information in the tutorial, which itself is awkwardly done. No surveying tools are given that I can find, you can't take a good look around before laying track, you just sort of have to launch the track layer in a direction and hope for the best, winging it as you go. If there is a way to get a bigger view of things, I have yet to find the option for it which goes back to the UI being a bigger source of frustration than anything else in the game. The AI trains can't be told to wait, so if you find yourself in a traffic jam or trying to iron out a bad stretch of track, you can move an AI train back, but it will come right back up and ram you in the rear end again. I like the concept, but it is not ready for a full release and needs a complete UI overhaul. I don't recommend it in its current state.
Constracktion offers a unique experience: driving and manipulating the rail laying machine. As player you have to connect different facilities with rail tracks, set junctions, speed limits and even signals at some point. What's good about it? Well, it is really enjoyable and rewarding when you finally correctly calculate all grades and curvatures and get things running. It is important to plan your route ahead considering height changes, hills, ravines and existing network. The machine is quite simple to use: it is not hardcore simulator in this sense. Also you can drive a freight train in order to help AI to sort things out. Physics are realistic, it is not impossible to find yourself in situation when you have to use one loco as a bank engine. Every industry levels up after a successful trip and your main goal to get a specific amount of such level ups in order to complete the map. If a train fails to deliver within expected interval, however, the level will decrease. So it's not a sandbox, but a management game. And what's bad about it? Well, if feels like a rushed release. Really it's an early access level of readiness. Not in terms of content: it will take literally hours to beat all maps present at the moment. But: UI is questionable and controls are unconventional. You will get used to it, but nevertheless. Map view could be better. For example, I want to see an elevation of the industries on it. And if I place a marker with an elevation value, I'd like to see it as well. And rail tracks of course! AI can sometimes be very stupid. It's your duty the help it, but having more than one bottleneck can become a nightmare. Also you can derail a train but you cannot just tell it to stop for a while. Why? There are no tunnels, at least on first three maps, and bridges are strictly placed. Bugs. Sometimes my loco gets reversed without apparent reason and stuck in its own cars. Time to time the game freezes completely, usually after some situations mentioned above. Menu elements are being automatically selected because you point mouse at something and that makes you unexpectedly exit the train. Finally, I placed a "wrong way" sign to prevent AI trains from running in order to re-arrange some tracks and after work was finished I was unable to remove this sign making an industry completely blocked! And, of course, a learning curve is very steep. It is a game about trial and error. A tutorial is very basic; you will have to understand on your own, which loco and consist of which length and load can handle a particular elevation or curvature, how to handle terrain in the best way and so on. It is totally OK to discover the game this way, if not only for bugs and a fact that sometimes it is literally easier to start a map from the beginning instead of trying to fix something after several hours invested already. So my recommendation is to wait several weeks or even month before diving deeply into this game. It has a very big potential. I still believe in the abilities of the authors of Diesel Railcar Simulator to get things done, but there are a lot of things to work on. Update: tried the game once again in a couple of month. Some issues mentioned above are resolved; however, bugs are still here (AI train ignoring "wrong way" sign, huh?), map is still hardly usable for many cases and in general it can be frustrating. Considering that the author apparently doesn't have a lot of enthusiasm, Constracktion will probably be abandoned sooner or later. Pity!
Yet another case of needing a "maybe" option, really. The audio is very "meh." Not a lot of ambient noise, train sounds leave a lot to be desired. The trains themselves are actually decent, detail-wise. Better detail in them than a lot of stuff I've seen for other train games. Graphics are mid. Not Train Simulator Classic-level of antiquated, but not Run8 either. More on par with Railroads Online, when that was a thing. The core game is fun enough, but the tutorial is really not great and the learning curve is steep. The control layout is garbage. The core game has a lot of potential to be a lot of fun, it just needs a lot of polishing and filling out. In current state, pick it up if you really want to and already have an idea of what you're getting into.
After Patch 13 I can now surely recommend this unique train game! In almost 30 years of gaming, the train games are always special to me, but this one is now my favorite among all of them. Based on the Unity engine (with the 2025 security patch) it's a 2-in-1 physics based puzzle and rail track construction game made by a small team: - play through six "puzzle styled" maps in easy and hard* modes using keyboard or gamepad controller - start with exploring the maps on your feet - thoroughly plan an effective rail network, take grades and curves into account - get in your track-layer locomotive and construct tracks bit-by-bit - buy more cars and engines if needed - place signs and signals - watch AI trains using your network to deliver materials and meet 'map goals' - assist them by taking controls, pushing trains or throwing switches for them - redesign parts of your rail network to improve the transportation performance - time acceleration also accelerates physics - use it to play at your favorite pace - aim for achievements to get even more fun No sandbox mode at the moment but you can keep playing after a map completion. A few hints from me: - keep loaded-train routes under +1% grade; steeper inclines will slow heavy trains significantly or even stop them. By curving, you can lengthen the path enough to reach the required height while staying within a low grade - for empty trains, routes up to 4% grade (maximum in the game) are fine and can help you keep the track layout compact (short and fast enough) - trains will stop in front of swithes, if they need to be thrown, so keep a minimal grade before a switch (starting the movement is the hardest part for a loco) - trains will stop before switches if they need to be thrown, so keep the grade low right before a switch — getting a loaded train moving again is the hardest task for its locomotive - the height markers - not only they tell the surface height and serve as waypoints on the minimap to visualize your imagined project, but they also display the grade to them from you when you hover mouse over them on the minimap - a must-have information for a good track planning - it is easier to build a complex but beautiful junctions hub (and redesign it later) when you build tracks at 0% for that area (but for the grades there is an automatically enabled assisting "autograde mode" to match the height of a track nearby) The graphics are simple but cute and technological: with some tesselation, FSR upscaling to 4k and FPS limit my hardware is quite silent and cool. The detailed sound effects are perfect: hear the engines roaring and the heavy loads rolling! I remember only very few train games where constructing a rail track is a thorough process and ConsTRACKtion turns it in simulation! *in hard mode you have to manage dirt (using a dirt car) to add or remove it for the needed grades PS I've just voted for Constracktion as the game of the year 2025.
I'm giving this a yes. The concept is great, there is a lot that could be done to balance things and make it more gamey however. The achievments are not fun, avoid them, they will waste your time especially if you play on hard like I do. Just play how you like. Needs more content, would gladly pay for DLC to support the dev.
In the current state of the game, I cant recommend picking it up quite yet. This really feels like an Early Access title. There are plenty of bugs and plenty of fighting the UI to do things that should be quite simple. I will underscore that it has good potential if it can iron out the bugs and fix the UI. I cant even judge the full game play yet because the amount of crashes and wonky things happening that I really only made it to the 3rd map before giving up and decided to come back to it later to see if it improves. ++ Trains :D + Track Planning & building, with terraforming + Ai Trains + Gameplay loop ~ graphics are pretty standard for Unity game -- Glitches, bugs, crashes ------------------------------------ UI IS THAT BAD
This is a rather unusual game. Its a bit quirky but overall it's fun. The updates come regularly which is impressive given how Steam lets new games go forever without regular updates. There is a bit of a learning curve but it's well explained and becomes intuitive in a short time. This is much different from many train type games I have played to date but that is what makes an enjoyable game. I recommend that you watch some videos of the game play to see if it's of interest to you. Overall well worth the purchase at this point in my opinion…
